So my parents thought it would be sweet to get their oldest a $250 Bass Pro gift card for Xmas...they being non archery folks had no idea that Bass's trad selection is slim pickins to say the least. Anyway, I have been beating my head all day trying to figure out how to make the money go the farthest for me with their meager selection of trad items. I need advice from the vets on what I ought to invest this free money into. For starters, let me say that I have enough bows, haha. I already own a fletching jig, some 23/64 taper tools, a selection of 23/64 woody broadheads and fieldpoints. Here are some of the ideas I had:
1. 3D deer target- don't have one, wouldn't hurt to use one for practice, this would probably exhaust more than half or all of the 250.
2. Electronic grain scale ($55ish)
3. Tru-center taper tool with 3 sizes ($55ish)
4. A dozen or more XX75 Gamegetter 500's
5. A dozen or more XX75 Gamegetter 400's
----my go to bows are 46-58#...Bass's Gamegetter's come with vanes so I'd have to strip and refletch em with feathers. I could get a dozen full length of either size to play with or a dozen of each and skip the 3D target?
6. A dozen or more Martin cedar arrows size 45/50? They are backordered on every other size! If they'd have had the 55/60's or 60/65's I'd have just bought 3 dozen of those and called it a day. Only problem is my lightest bow is a 46# Zipper and these arrows will be too soft I would think? Maybe cut down they'd work??
Anyway, I'm running short on ideas with their thin inventory. The 3D deer target seems like a good investment in my ability/practice...but I'm running thin on arrows lately so maybe the rework of the XX75's is a good idea??
Help!
PS: don't really need clothes, stand, boots, packs, other non bow/arrow/archery related items, but feel free to make suggestions..
If your buying carbon or alum arrows forget the taper tool, a target is always a good buy. I think arrow supplies is the key Fletch jig, feathers, glue, adapters ,nocks(wood and push in type) and even a hand held taper tool(cheep pencil type)side quiver, judo points and such.
edit: they also have some cheap carbons w/ vanes I could refletch..
guess the question is, is it worth all the work?
Sent you a PM
Good rain gear
Having a 3d target in the back yard sure beats flat target shooting in my book...you can play with different angles etc...throw some straw bales behind to save misses and you are good to go! Good luck....
Sounds like you got it pretty well planned out a it is. That $250 will be gone in no time
thanks for the support, lol. yeah, the 3D deer is looking more and more like the best investment. all i've been practicing on lately is a bag target and various small objects...i posted a thread a while back about my eye opening experience of shooting at a friend's 3d Deer...
I would get a 3D... I don't have one but would love one!!
anyone think the grain scale is worth having?? i could throw that in with the 3d target and still be in budget..
You can get a grain scale at almost any smoke shop(cigar and cigarette)for around $20.00
don't smoke, so i would have never known that! cool! ok, won't be spending 55 on that!
Game Cart. Cheaper than a heart attack. Can also haul stands, firewood, and misc.
I would avoid the "archery" dept....our sponsors here can take care of your needs there. I would go for boots and good socks, clothing both camo and non-camo, inexpensive packs, camping gear, and yes 3D target! I actually like their Redhead brand for cost-effective gear and clothing.
I'd get some shafts and a 3D deer. I picked up a target this past summer for $70 on sale.
I'd pass on the Martin shafts from what I've seen there.
You're right about the slim pickin's...rain gear was a great suggestion if you don't have some already.
cool guys, this is great stuff you're feeding me, will definitely help me make a good decision...so far i think the 3D deer is a go, found the same model my friend has for 130, that would leave 120 left to spend (i'm gonna have to pay a little extra on top of the 250 to cover shipping/tax)
i cannot believe the amount of products that say "out of stock online" and "backordered"...it's nuts, they must seriously be recovering from the holidays.
Consider clothing, boots or as someone already pointed out, rain gear. Cabelas has lots of offerings in those areas. Not much in trad equipment.
Man, they have a SWEET Garmin GPS on sale right now for $250 if you were looking for one. Oregon 450t
I would wait a couple-few weeks. It takes a while for places to restock after Christmas. I could spend 130 on socks alone!
Killdeer (Just got a new tent... :goldtooth: )
LOL. that's either a lot of socks or some fancy %ss socks, haha
Primos XXL blind. They're listed at $219 in the Bass Pro web site and are 77" tall...one of the few blinds that work well for traditional archers.
you can get a pair of Vortex Diamondback 8x42 binoculars for that amount.
Great optics- lifetime warranty- valuable tool for any type of hunting.

Yep again. Better deals with archery stuff with out sponsors. I save those cards for clothes boots etc You already have. I'd go for GPS or Optics.
Thanks for all the input guys. I think I'm gonna go for the 3D target. I believe it will really help hone my skill and will be a huge improvement over just the bag and foam balls and other objects I've been whacking. I'm going to get the Archer's Choice Real-World Buck. It's the same target I shot at over at my buddies house that I posted about a while back. It is very close in size to the actual deer we have here in North FL so that's a plus. I thought the durability was decent too. With tax/shipping it'll be about 160 so I'll still have 100 to play with later when I decide what else I need. Can't wait to start slinging arrows at the new buck!
They have a nice selection of knives and or boots.Arrows may be an option as well.
I go thier alot as its down the road and hardly ever buy any archery gear. Some catwhiskers might be something you could use and they have some traditional looking 2 blade heads available.
A quality knife sounds tempting though like thier Buck knives etc
It is tough sometimes to find trad archery items at Bass Pro.
1. I use my grain scale a lot.
2. I also like a digital bow scale.
3. I can't imagine practice without a 3-D target.
4. They sell Cat Whiskers
5. If you don't have a Lone Wolf tree stand....
6. A Trail cam is a lot of fun.
Happy shopping!
Well the order is in!
1. 3d deer target! -real excited about this one
2. Primos turkey call kit - never into hunting turkeys but I got the bug now and want to learn
3. Three packs of game blunts for stump shooting
Thanks for all the input guys! You certainly provided me with enough ideas for the duration of 2013 ;)
