Title: javi hunt recommendations welcomed early 2014
Post by: Izzy on January 15, 2013, 08:18:00 AM
I know my critter killin pal Randy has been there a few times and killed a pile of critters. Anyone else?
I looked at the website several times and it looks like beautiful, wild country. Im very interested in giving javis a go and the price is right here as well as the duration of the hunt. My boys are still pretty young so I cant go off for a 7 to 10 day hunt but this is a 3 day hunt, so with travel its probably doable in 5.
Id like to hear from folks even if theyve hunted in that particular region and what is the best time of year to hunt javis.

Izzy,
A couple of years ago I hunted javis around Ft. Stockton; lots of pigs, and a fun hunt that is made for trad bows. At $48 for a Texas 5 day license, you can afford to pay a landowner and have a lot of fun in the process. I was there in March, and the weather was great; 40s in the mornings, 70s during the day.

the ranch is 35 miles south of ft. Stockton.

I was about 20 miles south of Ft. Stockton when I went. In 3 days you should have multiple opportunities at a stink pig.

Id like to chat with you some more on this Randy.  Curt, Texas has put up with double Puerto Ricans in the past and it was no worse for the wear. We only killed weak and or  elderly critters    :)   . Maybe we can set something up and rope Tarz in as well.    :readit:

I was looking at the area on Google maps and it looks WILD ! Just what the Dr. ordered. Lots of steep and desolate country, true adventure and supposedly target rich.   :saywhat:

If it all come together youd be a pleasure to have along Terry Rec just try not to make us look bad. Youll probably do something like kill a running double with a 60 yard shot behind your back with a bow youve never shot before. By the way Terry, I finally joined the PBS.

Izzy, Here is a pic of one of the two javis I took. I was wearing camo, but it isn't really needed for these little guys. They do seem to have decent noses, although I don't know how they get past their own smell. The country is gentle rolling hills where I was, really brushy. I wasn't able to see for long distances where I was due to the thick brush. I took this pig right at daylight, and there were probably 20 or more around me, some as close as 5 yards, all grunting and arguing with each other. I shot this one at about 10 yards, and he went about 30 yards.

c'mon guys, this sounds like a TradGang javie hunt in the making.  I want to go tackle a javie as soon as I can get a good lead on them.  I still have a valid TX hunting license from Solana!!

I haven't hunted there, but working in the oil field we had rigs on the Longfellow Ranch. I saw a lot of game driving through at daylight every morning and lots of rattlesnakes.

Randy as you know we've talked a little about getting some guys together to go with you to Longfellow...but...as much as I'd luv to go in Feb., it's just too short notice for me bud.

Now, if you were talking Feb. 2014....then we'd be cookin' with gas!

They are listed under tg sponsors. I see that they can host up to 32 hunters.   :readit:

maybe I missed it, but I didn't see reference to a javelina hunt.  Sounds fun

Is anyone familiar with a ranch that has hogs and javelina and maybe some free range wild ram kinda critters ?  I would love to try for a corsican but I really don't want to shoot one that just got released.  Sorry, just me.

Not sure what happened there but it appears that they have suspended some of their hunts due to range conditions.

Their property may have been hit pretty hard by the drought that has been going on for a couple of years.  I checked the site and it only mentioned big game.  Maybe the javelina haven't been as affected.  Hope you guys get to go on the hunt.

Thats what it looks to be Pat, a darned shame. I was really looking forward to that country. Looks like back to the drawing board for 2013/2014 winter hunt.   :dunno:

It is not nearly as large of a ranch, but there are plenty of slots left open at Lincoln Ranch this spring. I am going march 14-17. Prices are reasonable, hog numbers are good, javelina are there but maybe not as many as in other places.  Setup for night hunting and spot and stalk.

We hunted with Jacob Berger of Mule Creek Outfitters last week - a good population of hogs and javalina and a good outfit.  We both got javalina.
