I see lots of threads asking if this bow or this arrow will be enough for certain animals .
So I'm asking it this way ,this is my set up ,what won't it be enough for ??
Bow ,55# hoyt buffalo
Arrows ,easton axis fmj's 400's 29.25 bop ,75gn hit insert 100gn point (2 or 4 blade stingers) total wieght 505 gn
I draw 28.5 average speed 185 fps.
Please let me know what you think thanks,
John .
Rhinos are not a good idea, and elephants are right off the list.
T-rex
and bluw whales? I just don't think you're gonna have enough penetration!
Hokay, serious time. It is hard to say what you "won't have enough (penetration)" for with your set-up. Shot placement tells the ultimate tale, if there is minimal to no bone contact you should have plenty for most game. Bone contact adds serious resistance and brings broadhead strength and durability into question. Ultimately, it is your decision. Lots of folks like more grain weight per pound than you have to sway the odds in their favor, should there be a less than perfect hit (read: more bone contact). BUT, you have plenty and arrow tuning is the more crucial issue to address IMO. More weight carries more downrange momentum theoretically which means more penetration potential, but a straight flying arrow drives all the potential penetration force directly behind the point of the broadhead. Tune for perfect arrow flight where you are maximizing that force. Best of luck.
I did shoot arrows that weighed 560gn's out of my hoyt & my
Widow ( cx edge hunters ) but my fmj's at this set up will bare shaft out to 30 yards so i don't really want to mess with them .
Wasn't planning any dino hunts this year guys but thanks for the heads up :bigsmyl:
In North America this will work on everything.
I started to comment on the UK critters but I almost forgot that us serfs are forbidden to bowhunt there.
I'd think only a few beasts in Africa would be a problem: Elephant, Rhino, & Cape Buffalo (may not be legal).
In my humble opinion, I think it's too much for game like chipmunks, especilly with the 4 blade broadheads. I'm think too much damage for full body mounts. :biglaugh:
Bring your camera and take lotsa' pics!
1,000 pound boars is definitely out
Other than a Jackalope your good to go!
Definatly don't shoot that lizard from Spiderman. You would need a Higher FOC and a single bevel :)
anything in North America and Africa plans game.
Most of my gear falls inand around yours. I would hunt anything in NA with my bows.
I don't think it's appropriate for anything in England, maybe you should just send it on across the pond for me to use here in Colorado!

Goat I would send it to you but I'll have to come with it , its to young to fly by its self :biglaugh: thanks for all the input guys .who knows if the british bowhunters assc get lucky in the future I may be able to invite some of you over to hunt roe & fallow deer with me in epping forest .
John
Hope I'm not out of line here, but I wonder if you're not over spined. And if that's the case then you might not have very good arrow flight, and......that leads to bad things, especially when shooting at live animals.
Like some have already stated. Well tuned arrows and razor sharp broadheads and you have what it takes to kill anything in North America.
I believe he stated it bareshafted great at 30 yds. If that's the case, it doesn't sound off spine.
Come on over and hunt it all! Just make sure they are sharp.
Cape Buffalo, probably not a good idea.
Chef the spine is all good ,as I said they group at 30yds bareshaft , on eastons spine chart there spot on ,I know that's just a rough guide though :saywhat: as for hunting I'm not new to it so my set ups always get the job done .
what and where do you intend to hunt?
Rob that was the point of me starting this thread ,
I wanted to know what my kit wouldn't work for ?
I'm thinking of trying a ranch in texas later this year ,I've been to africa three times but never to the states .
Some friends of mine have been to a ranch in texas ( double L ranch ) & had a blast ( hogs & exotics ) but from readIng the comments from the guys it seems I'm good for most things your side of the pond ,what do you think ?
