I got this beauty for Christmas! It was made by a friend of mine, Don Orrell, in Fordland, MO. The riser is bubinga with a maple and phenolic accent stripe. The limb core is bamboo and a strip of some sort of black glass. The veneer is curly cedar. The limb cross-section is trapezoidal with the small end being on the belly of the bow.
I cannot believe how fast and hard this bow shoots! It makes my other bows look like toys.

That ramp cap almost looks scrimshaw'd.
Very pretty... but I heard stuff creak when I just READ the draw weight! :)
Don Orrell's wife, Toni, has a laser etching machine that she uses to do all that work.
Don's primary business is making custom wooden stirrups. If you are in the rodeo crowd then you've probably heard of his work. I don't know anything about any of that but I sure do like his bows!

Nice bow Darren, that will be a dandy huntin bow come spring gobbler season!

Darren,
You musta added more pic's after I posted about the spec's, and those limb veneers look like fire
Nice looking bow. Those limb veneers are sweet.
A friend of mine has one of his recurves that I got to shoot last year, and are fine shooting bows.
That's a real beauty........
The bow is 56 pounds at 28 inches - a little more stout than I wanted but I can shoot it well so I guess that's all that really matters. Don originally made the bow to be 55#@25" - I could draw it almost to my chin! So he sanded the glass down to take some weight out and called me when he thought it was where I wanted it to be. You ever just pick up a bow and be able to shoot it well? That how I was with this one - me and this bow get along really well together.
That is a very nice looking bow.
Very fine bow , congrats  :clapper:
Beauty for sure,enjoy. :clapper: :clapper:
Sure looks like a keeper to me! I really like the wood combo.
Congrats, that is a nice looking bow, bubinga is one of my favourite woods.
Nice looking bow congrates!
I always wondered the formula a bowyer uses to hit his goal weight. Seems like it would be difficult. It appears thats all your friend did wrong as the bow is a piece of work and you should be proud!
Possum Head, he actually hit the weight correct - he made this bow for himself originally.
These guys used to only make recurves and I told Don that when he got his longbow design perfected that I would buy one from him. He made two bows like the one I got; one 56" long and one 60" long and wanted me to see if I liked them. Well, I loved them both but just wasn't hoss enough to shoot them. So Don told me that he would lighten up whichever one I wanted if I committed to buy it ($300!) I couldn't pass up a deal like that and I just loved the way the 60" bow felt in my hands.
Don called me a week later and said he had the bow down to my weight so I went over to his shop to shoot it. Me and that bow instantly clicked! Don then refinished it and I am now a proud owner of one of his creations.
