Who's hunted them, besides the Alaska guys I know? I just put in for some Drawing Permits for next year. Keeping my fingers crossed. Got a Robertson Vision Falcon on order that I plan on hunting with should I draw or if I find a place to hunt without drawing.

Where did you put in for? I put in for the TMA as always but never get it. Look over near chisana or up along the chitna river as well as out of nebesna if your looking at the eastern interior. Nice sheep country. The nice thing for you is that its only a ferry ride & an 8 hour or so drive to get to the jump off. Good luck on the draw.
-
Hey John,
I put in for Tok and Delta...and also a bowhunt only for any sheep in 14A. I haven't been lucky on any drawings down here...moose and elk, so I figure the computer has been holding out for me.
-
Yep Delta is a good one if you can draw it. Had friends pull two nice rams out of there this year. I've heard good things on 14A but never have hunted it or put in for it. I have a cabin in the TMA on the north side of the alaska range and its only about a mile from where you start running into sheep. I see them all the time but without a tag I can only drool...
I too have not been very lucky in the draws over the years. I did get an Etolin Island elk tag a few years back and that has been it!! So I'm guessing that I'm due too!! Geesh out of over 100 apps I hope so!! This old body just don't have many more sheep hunts left in it and I want the TMA before its used up!!
-
Good luck to you both!
-
eagerly waiting next august, just hope I wont be working until sept again.
Didnt sheep hunt at all this past year. Attempted to get into our 14c hunt, ran into problems, pulled out and got pounded literally with weather. Had that one window right at the beginning, it all went down hill from there.
Why don't you hunt sheep with Steve? I'm sure he'll be out somewhere in august.
-
Good luck to you both!
-
Yeah, I may try and hunt with Steve but he's secretive about "his" sheep spots.
-
AkDan - Yeah working in Sept like you had to do this year does suck! I unfortunately had to work alot more then I wanted too! So are you putting in for any of the draw units (14C?)or are you going to hunt the general??
I'm thinking if no TMA luck I'll hunt along the reservation boundary just outside of the TMA. And/or the St Elias NP elders hunt in early October. Missed it this year due to work!! Its any sheep too.
-
That BASS-tard!
-
John,
Probably not.
I'll put in for the TMA as usual. I wont put in for delta, but then again I don't know better to do it. The people I know whove hunted it have not done well. Might put in for a couple regular tags in 14c, we'll see.
I have some spots, road accessable that always have legal rams. Hard to pass them up as I had to do this year.
Chris,
He'll take you!
John,
You know how I feel on your "subsitence" issues lmao. GL if you go.

I drew DS203 Delta tag.
Delta Sheep (http://www.wildlife.alaska.gov/index.cfm?adfg=sheephunt.delta)
-
I drew 14 C (archery/any sheep)last year and ended up hunting just S of Anchorage. Alot of sheep and ended up taking a yew (very tasty). I had a white suit which really helped me out to get close.
-
I meant EWE...
-
JLB,
SWEET! I assume you went for the early foot hunt? You going to get airlifted in? Going for the whole season? Heck, you have ME excited...you better get everything ready NOW ;)
-
To my knowledge it looks like DS203 is a walk-in and DS204 is unrestricted so that permit allows a fly-in. I think I remember putting in for the 203 because I wanted to save some $$ and walk in.
Yes, I will be going for the whole season, 10 days I believe. The new regs don't come out until July 1 so unless something changed that's what I'll be doing.
I'll be picking Steve H's brain as soon as he gets back from Albuquerque.
-
Thanks for sharing that you drew your delta tag. Just noticed that ADFG posted reults and I drew DS140....
-
Awesome Congrats!
-
I was thinking this meant you could get dropped off on the airstrip:
"The use of motorized vehicles and pack animals in any manner for big game hunting is prohibited inside the controlled use area from August 5 through August 25. This does not prohibit the use of motorized vehicles on the Richardson Highway or the Charlie Boyd Airstrip along the Johnson River for accessing the hunt area or transporting game. From Aug.26th to Aug.5th motorized access and the use of pack animals is allowed for Big Game hunting in all of the DCUA."
Just thinking that would give you a head start...
-
Congrats Chris and Mark!!! Make sure to keep us up to date on your sheep hunts when the time comes. Also make sure to take lots of pictures. Dan

Thanks Steve,
After looking at the ADF&G site more I found that the DS203 is Aug 10-25 and DS204 is Aug 26 - Sept 20. I guess I chose DS203 because it was earlier.
On the link I provided earlier it says 203 is a walk-in...I assume you can fly-in after Aug 25th, I could be wrong.
"The Alaska Range, southeast of Delta Junction offers 2 drawing permit hunts each year, with 75 permits drawn for the walk-in DS 203 ( Aug.10 till Aug.25); and 75 permits drawn for the unrestricted access DS 204 (Aug.26 till Sept.20) in the Delta Controlled Use Area (DCUA). The DCUA was created in 1971 to provide quality walk-in sheep hunting opportunities free from competition with other transportation types during the early portion of the sheep season. Because of ever-increasing hunting pressure, the area went to drawing permits in 1978. As is the case in most of the rest of the state, the bag limit is one Ram with full curl or larger horns. The use of motorized vehicles and pack animals in any manner for big game hunting is prohibited inside the controlled use area from August 5 through August 25.

Well, I'm sure you will get all the details ironed out and probably get a few scouting trips made as well. You are a lucky dog! Get your pack "mules" lined up too--maybe promises of sheep tenderloin could entice a couple strong backs :jumper:

These threads on AK still kill me! Why didnt I move up there.
-
because it'll cost you darn near as much to hunt here as a resident as it does for you as a non resident! Shorter hunting seasons. Lack of good hunting partners. gear upgrade big time, costs a small fortune, jeesh whatelese, list could go on and on.
Move to BC!
-
Thats part of it lol. But here in CO it only a month of bow season. Im still tossing the idea around in my head. Will see if I get the job im applying for right now. If not I might start sending Apps. up your way lol. Then again maybe BC, wonder what a Cops pay is in Canada?
-
If your an experienced police officer, AK has some very good sign on bonuses
-
I just got out of the Academy

Take Alaska, lay it over the USA.
Now take ALL those states and start looking at your opportunities.
You could hunt from august till heck almost april, in relative comfort. At a cost that is mcuh less then doing an couple good hunts up here every year.
Been here 11 years now, considering moving. Have had fun, but have also realized the minus's in that time. If it wasnt for the fishing keeping me here..........................................................
So unless you dream of sheep, goats, grizzlies or brownies you aint gaining anything by moving here other then plane fare and saving some on tags. We still get raped in bush flights!!!! For you it's a dream, for us we do it most years! (those more fortunate then I do it every year)!
-
...and houses are outrageous here in Juneau.
-
ps,
Dont want to detract from your dream.
But look at how much an average fly out hunt runs us every year, on the average about 2000 bucks, many are less, many are more. What we all dream of, costs, and as years go buy, that costs is sky rocketing. Case in point, charter flight, sfk river, 750 bucks, next year 1500 bucks, 2 years later, just shy of 2000! Thats for 45 mn of air time and a one way trip!!!!
The other factor, 4 wheelers, river boats, and or bush planes. Figure you'll have one or any combination of these if you dont like paying charter flights, and a snowmobile for some winter fun and possible winter hunts.
There is no palce more majestic, more beautiful and more fun to be in!! The solitude is just short of awesome.
Does the good outweigh the bad, something you gotta ask yourself!!!
-
Hey dont get me wrong Colorado if great the weathers awesome. I just want to live near another state lol (NM,AZ are on top of my list) (with late season archery) and we have sheep and goats here. I figure I can save for brown bears, and dalls if not there loads of other hunts to do that are cheap!
-
juneaulongbow - Congrates on drawing. I put in for the TMA and of course didn't draw. Oh well I still have the mentastas & wrangells to go to.
Got your email. Nope I've never hunted sheep in the DCUA so I have no first hand on that. As mentioned earlier my neighbors daughter and her husband both took sheep last year. Not sure if they drew the 203 or 204 tag. When I see them I'll get some details. They live in Fbks, he is from Delta and she is from Tok,
