In a couple of years I am turning 50 years old - in my home country there is not much possibilities to hunt big game with bow and arrow, so to kinda present to myself I am thinking a once in lifetime deerhunt in USA. Just plain Jane hunt, primitive camp, kinda wilderness expirience ( maybe looking for Turkeys too), chance to harvest a little eating size deer ( no horns needed to that soup ;) )
Where would be good place? To me good would be: Over the counter permits, somewhat wilderness settings, public land, fairly good deer numbers and... what you think I should consider? Some folks have wisited Virginia to hunt from here and they have liked that state a lot - maybe to there? I have good four years to go, but I thought to plan this one as good as possible...

You'll have to find a state where deer season and turkey season coincide. NC, unfortunately, is not one of those states.
I have thousands of acres right out my door, Uwharrie National Forest, and most all of Uwharrie is game land and free primitive camping is allowed. I live one mile from Birkhead Wilderness and on a recent hike through there saw numerous scrapes and rubs that were not too old. Scrapes were still clear of leaves and deer tracks were in them. A late season rut activity sign if you ask me.
Maybe someone from a state that has a dual season will jump in.

Most states in the US have varied prices for out of state licenses. each state may have other fee associated with specific species. you can google each by just using the state name and fish and wildlife (example: New Jersey fish and wildlife)and that should get you info your looken for.The midwest has a lot more deer and also the south East of the US.JMHO

When you buy your archery deer tag you get 2 turkey tags with it. So for I believe 225 you get 2 deer tags and 2 turkeys tags. I would suggest either when the season first starts, September 15. Or late October when the bucks start moving again.
Make sure that you meet the hunter safety requirement if applicable. In many states you cannot but a hunting license without having completed a course.

That is where my state is good about stepping in. In Ohio (don't know how many years this will last) you can buy a "Non-resident apprentice license" for $125.00. The only catch is you must be accompanied by a Legal hunter 21 or older. I believe that is your only option without having a valid hunter safety course. You can do the hunter education study portion for Ohio online but you must complete the course in a classroom setting. Probably would be easier to just do the apprentice thing. Deer and fall turkey season overlap and the permits are $24.00 a piece. We have a decent amount of public land. One area to look into is AEP Gavin Public hunting lands.

If you think about bowhunting deer , the best time is mid-october to mid-november. Then the weather is more hunting friendly and (mostly)not as hot and miserable anymore.
If you have seen the Sountern Indiana Traditional Bowhunt advertised here, that's where I would go. Since you are not born after 1975, there is no hunting education requirement.
Deer and turkey season do overlap in fall.
Tags are unfortunately not super cheap, but the folks are friendly and welcoming. Especially in this area. Another good possibility is TN, but the primitive camping is not so much possible where the deer numbers are really good. I would go the last week of october and first week of November there, before the ML crowd moves in.
