Title: need info on asbell wool please
Post by: RobinHood1389 on January 07, 2013, 05:44:00 PM
Gonna be ordering One here shortly, but I have a few questions first.
First question, what does the collar area of the mackinaw look like without the shoulder layer?
Second, how do the pullovers look without a hood?
Not sure what I want to order but it will definitely be evening stand brown. Lol

Thanks in advance.

I only have a pullover with a hood. I like it but the hoods are big. I don't think you would be disappointed with any of the asbell wool. If you got a chance to go to kzoo you could wait and see what you liked in person and get it there.

I've got the pull over w/out the hood and like it.  I almost never took it off during my elk season.

I have the Mackinaw pullover which is a pullover without hood and a Mackinaw Cape with hood... I also have the vest without hood so I can wear them independent or layered and wear the cape whenever it's needed! I find it to be versatile and sweet! I figured I only wanted one hood and it would be my last layer so it's easy to add or take off even with the safety belt on...

Not the first time I've been asked that Kyle. Not that I know of but I could be wrong. I sent you an email when you were asking about stump shooting I don't know if you got. Like I said if you can wait three weeks you can go up to Kalamazoo and see their products first hand. I know lots of people will be there, me included.

just sent mrs. asbell an email. gonna order in the next day or two. new question though....what weight wool to order?
I want to use this for Indiana deer season and after season stump shooting as well as winter small game. the average winter temp here is 20-30 the last two winters (normally much colder. winter has been mild). Now obviously it gets colder at times.
I have a very heavy woolrich jacket for those days.
would a medium weight (17-20oz) be sufficient in your opinion for say a 30 ish degree stump shooting afternoon?
thanks all

I would pick the pattern I wanted without worrying about the weight. You just match what you put on under it for the conditions. I wear a long sleeve Tshirt in the early season and carry the pull over to the stand and put it on when I get there.

I have 3 pieces of the Asbell wool: 1 zippered jacket with hood, and 2 vest with hood. I'm a vest man for sure when hunting, but the zippered jacket is hard to beat for casual wear or in the woods. I also own 2 longshirts sold by Ron LaClaire. Neither of these has a hood or collar but work well with a mock or turtle neck shirt or sweater during colder weather. As for the larger hood size often mentioned it is particularly helpful if you wear a Fred Bear type hat when hunting. If you havn't noticed G. Fred Asbell is partial to this style hat as well. I havn't asked but I would bet Teresa could make the hood a little smaller if that is what you prefer. Course that is a special request and just might come with an extra charge and a l;itle longer wait. Thanks again Teresa for providing such a wonderful product.
