Post by: dnovo on January 05, 2013, 10:02:00 PM
Who is shooting a Hill style bow and hunts with a back quiver? A Howard Hill style leather back quiver. Any body put a bow quiver on a Hill bow?

It is a HH bow but a HH style back quiver. Yes, I hunt with back quivers sometimes and mostly with my HH bow.

No bow quivers on the Hill styles.

Dave Johnson LB with a Hill quiver I made. Both saw three days of Georgia hunting this past week. No game taken though.

So do these bows not perform well with a quiver on it or does everyone just like the trad of the back quiver with a hill? I am getting my first hill type and was planning on putting a quiver on it, since thats what I am use to.

To be perfectly honest, I've never put a quiver on my Hill bows, so I'm not sure how it would feel.  For me using a bow quiver on a longbow takes away from the simplicity of the design.  These bows are light and fast in the hand and to me adding the weight of a quiver would negative affect those properties.  But I've never been a fan of bow quivers in general.  Even when I shot compounds I would remove my bow quiver once I got settled into the treestand.  I always felt that the bow seemed off balance with a quiver on it.

I say try it out and see if you like it.  Shoot the bow with and without quiver and see how it handles.  I would go for a very small quiver, like an EFA 3 arrow version.

I know there are some guys around here that use quivers on Hills.  I'm sure they will chime in.

Doesnt hurt the performance, just takes away the feel of the bow that most of us like.

I've had GN, Annawaki and EFA on mine and didnt like any of them, just takes away that light, quick pointing well balanced feel. I use bow quivers on my other bows sometimes but not my staight bows.

Well I have a small kanati 4 arrow strap on quiver I'll try. I have always used a bow quiver, might have to try a back quiver, I sold a tube quiver a month or so ago, but I will have to experiment.

I often shoot mine with a 4 arrow EFA. I notice the different weight, but the bow shoots equally well either way.

What Mikebiz said!

And I'll add a good back quiver and nocking above the nock point will let you reload and shoot a follow up shot mighty fast  :bigsmyl:

With my Hill, I use a back quiver for small game hunting and roving, an EFA bow quiver for hunting big critters.

LB Shooter2, bow quivers work as good on a Hill as they do on any other bow.

I have a stiff back quiver from Hill that I use largely as a freight hauler to the range, because it will hold a large number of arrows. I have a couple of softer back quivers that collapse against my back and keep arrows from rattling. These are the ones I most commonly use while hunting. While I often used bow quivers with recurves, I just don't care for them on my Hill longbows.

This has been in other threads, but what's one more time!

JD Berry String Follow Misty Dawn, 66" 51#@28", HHA back quiver, Hildebrand Sitka Spruce arrows with Eclipse "Chubby Bunny" field points.

I plan on using the Misty Dawn and the back quiver for moose hunting this fall. If  I can get them tuned to this bow, I have some heavy ash arrows with Grizzly 160's that will be good moose medicine.

Westbrook,
Who makes the quiver in your top picture, with the bow and quiver on the bench?

Thanks..

Just a guess but it looks like the quiver that Steve offers on his Northern Mist longbow web page.

I made my Hill style quiver last month. They work great!  I love this design of quiver, and is now my go to. I just got the Cheetah last week and it is fantastic.  It really seems to love heritage 250's cut to 30" with a 200gr point.

Here they are together at last!
