Title: my 1st bow arrived today, no idea what to look for
Post by: JTurkish on January 04, 2013, 12:52:00 AM
Album here  http://imgur.com/a/3z8jr

All i can tell is that it's filthy and there's a sticker that says Used $35.95, which makes me feel crappy for paying $85.7

Before you get too depressed shoot it for a little while, it may surprise you and any good shooting bow for $90 is a great deal. By the way, what is the make and model of the bow and what are the specs of the bow?

Hope you find yourself loving this bow...

I would say you got it at a good price. I would take off that thing that looks to be some kind of old sight mount, get a b-50 string and sling some arrows... I am not sure I could count all the bows I got laying around but I can tell ya them old 70's recurves get picked up more often then you would think because they are a blast to shoot.

I am sure that if you out grow this bow you can easily re coop you purchase price and put that money towards a new bow...

Keep us updated

J, she looks like a shooter! Wipe her down, tune her up, and let her sling some sticks! I think you got a good deal. I had a bow very similar years ago, and it was a fun tool to learn on. Enjoy it!

I think you got a great deal on a great shooting bow. I think once you get a string on her and shoot a few arrows you won't be to upset about paying $80 for it.

Looks like you're shooting on the "right" side of the shelf. Clean her up and shoot her. $80 for a good shooting bow is a great deal.

No, no, guys, the shelf is on precisely the correct side of the bow.  can't help it if only a relative few of us (the chosen few) realize the correct way to shoot a bow   :bigsmyl:  . Looks like a little cleaning up and you're good to go with that little Browning.  They are great bows.

I leave my bow in the car just unstring it. Heat is the real killer ive seen bows in cars strung up delaminate in heat. Cold no so bad but best to unstring. wipe it down with a mild light soap and water. Look into a new string, i prefer flemish and some of the vendors on here have great ones. I doubt it is fast flight capable so stick with b-50 but you can get a "skinny" string with padded loops and boost performance. Good luck. Word of warning...you will become addicted!!

Some dish soap and a wet wash rag will probably work, if you have other funky stuff that won't come off, try some rubbing alcohol on a rag. just stay away from harsh chemicals they can eat through your bow's finish. A prime example would be insect repellant, it's innocent enough, it's summer, your shooting but mosquitos are buzzing you so you put some insect spray on and then pick up your bow and continue shooting, then you notice the grip area and how the finish has been removed.
You can leave your bow in the car when it's cold, just don't leave it strung up if the weather is hot or the bow will delaminate.

My gosh, you guys are like a comedy routine this morning!

And I agree.  $85 is a great buy on this bow . . . a far better buy than I made on my last bow.  But warning -- archery and bows are addictive.  I've only been at this for one year, and I have bought about 18 bows (most through TradGand Classified, and sold about 15 bows through the same site.

Have fun!  This is a great community.

I've bought a few used bows off the auction site. Some were covered with all kinds of crud ranging from just OLD dirt, to some nasty tape residue. Warm soap and water does wonders for the dirt. I used Goo Gone for the tape residue, followed by more soap and water to get rid of the cleaner. All of them cleaned up to the "quite nice" state. And all of them were great shooters - Shakesperes, Indians, a Browning, a Wing. The only one I sold as soon as I could was a 70" Pearson long bow marked 50# @ 28", but must have been at least 65#. I couldn't even begin to draw that sucker. The others were all fun and if I hadn't gotten bitten with "the bug", would have served me fine as an only bow.

I think you are going to enjoy it.

Just be sure when you string it up both limbs bend the same direction.

You can make that thing look new, first get some 0000 steel wool, lightly scrub with the grain of the wood/ fiberglass... then wipe it down with a cleasn rag.  then go to Home Depot and get Poly-wipe.. the part is tricky, you are going to apply the poly wipe on to the bow but it has to be uniformly the lenght of the bow.  What I do is hang the bow on one end. have clean cloth rag  tightly wrapped around something straight like a left over peice of wood (usually a leftover 4" peice of wood form a project), then you apply generously to the cloth soaking it, the you  apply.  After applcation, let it hang dry

Looks like a good deal to me.  My daughter just picked up a flea market bow that was really crudy, stubborn stuff wouldn't come off.  We used citra-solv and it turned out Great (notice the capital "g").  I also use this stuff to clean the rosin build up on my precious violins if that gives you an idea of how much I trust it not to ruin the finish.

Try Scratch Out (mild abrasive that will remove a lot of gunk) after a mild soapy bath.  LOL.   Sweet bow don't worry what you paid shoot the hell out if and enjoy every arrow!

Speaking of arrows, what kind do you plan to shoot out of your new (to you) bow?  I would guess 1716's?
