After a great deer season and taking a deer with the bow my daughter had picked out for me, it was time to get the bow that Mom had picked out and see what I can do before our season closes! Wisconsin has an extended Turkey season for my unit and today was the last day until it closes.
The snow has been falling here with already 15 or so inches on the ground. The turkeys have been feeding heavily and often. I was hunting in a wooded subdivision where a friend of mine has 10 acres and his Dad has the ajoining 150 acres. The Turkeys have been very active and feeding pretty much all day, so now was my time to to try and get one! There was a flock of 30-40+ birds, with 2/3rds of them being hens and a 1/3rd of them being jakes. Never having gotten a Turkey with my bow before, this was an eye opener. I never realized how fidigity they were. Finally a young Jake gave me an opptunity, I burned a hole in the wing and the arrow was on its way. It went a total of 30-35 yards.
I took it with a Schafer Silvertip 58@28, on the bow it has Mom's name on it, along with an inscription that reads "hands that help guide me with a heart that knows no boundries".
After the shot...

When I shot it and followed it, I noticed that it didn't bleed a whole lot. They don't seem to have a lot of blood in them, or is that just me?

Were you hunting in a blind? Set it up ahead of time, or just pop it up that day?

I just went and bought one of the leftover tags about 4 weeks ago. I live on the same street as my friend. The Turkeys were not moving much after that 1st snow storm we had. After a few days they started having "trails" that they followed regularly. I did put up a trail camera in his 10 acres to see how often they were using them and it showed me they were traveling those trails about 6-7 times daily, with more and more of the action happening just before 4pm. That may be just before they head to roost.
The blind was set up before hand and after the trails wewre defined, about 14 or so yrds off of the trails. I will snap a picture of theses turkey trails today, its really pretty neat.
Nice Job, and a great looking bird.
Congrats Richard. Turkeys are tough.
Well done, indeed. Nice pix.
