Title: Durability of KUIU pants?
Post by: pamike on December 31, 2012, 03:16:00 PM
Will these lightweight pants hold up to moose hunting in Newfoundland? Just trying to decide if they can do that - stretch is great but are the resistant to tough terrain?

In my experience the durability is pretty decent in tough terrain, but not great where there are briars or tougher brush.  Overall I really like the comfort and performance, but I hunt more open country for the most part than Newfoundland.

Should be fine, like Jock said brairs will cause the thread to pull getting little runners in the fabric. Wouldn't affect the performance but looks bad. My friend wore a pair in Alaska last fall and he had no issues with brush.

I almost killed (ruined) a pair on my mt. goat hunting trip this year, but they are sure nice to wear.

They worked great in alaska in the tundra.  They don't work so great in the swamps and briar thickets of south georgia.  They hold up well...they just have "picks" all up and down from the briars.

That is what I was thinking would happen - great comfort but most likely only good for one hunt.  Will they still keep you dry even with all the "runners"?

Any better pants?

I've hunted with mine going on the second season now and yes they still keep me dry.

They are the most comfortable outdoor pants I've ever worn. Stretch fabric, and lot's of pockets.

But for hunting in southern Ontario, I prefer Sitka. The Kuiu fabric pulled terribly in briars, is not waterproof, or windproof. I'd never use these on an extreme hunt where you rely on your gear.

For the money, I'd look elswhere.

I think KUIU and Sitka fabrics will be similar. I have and old orginal Sitka mountain pant and its a fuzzy ball near the leg ends from briars. Got a pair of 90% pants and they seem to be a little better. The 90% get a lot of wear. Both brands  dry quickly and breathe well. If you want tough, you might look at cabelas micro tex. They will hold through about anything including briars. They dry quickly and are dead silent quite. Fit is probably not as good as KUIU or Sitka though.

You might want to look at First Lite. Rip proof (except for barbed wire), quiet and wool.  The material is doubled on the knees and butt.  I truck throught nasty cedar swamps, briers and thick stuff here in northern MI and my gear takes a beating. First Lite pants hold up.
