Title: Black Creek "Siren", More pics P.3
Post by: Lamey on December 29, 2012, 04:37:00 PM
Ive been horse trading and working with Jim Gainey a few years on a bow.  To make a long story very short, Ive finally got one of Jims bows in the house.

The riser is a piece of CocoBola Ive had in my shop for about 5 years, was really not expecting much as far as "looks" but it sure came out nice, much more variation/color in the grain then I thought.  I had Jim contour the handle a bit "tighter" up under the shelf, with a smaller throat. It feels very good, fills the hand without being "big" or "blocky".

The limb core is bamboo, with the limb veneers being Curly Maple.  The Curly Maple was lightly stained, which makes for good camo around here.  The tips and overlays are black phenolic with the same Cocobola from the riser over that.

The bow specs. are 58",  #53@28.  Of all the R/D bows ive had through my hands I would have to say this is the quietest of the more aggressive R/D bows.  I would rate it right there with the better "D" strung bows as far as "silence".  I mean there is nohting on release... no ping, pitch, twang, thump, thud etc... nothing.  For me this is a big deal,  maybe its all in my head but I do indeed like a silent bow.

Its also very well mannered, with no thump, shock or other vibratory shennanigans on release.  Just dead in the hand.

Speed is about like other R/D bows, I dont have a chrono, nor do I chase speed.  Its plenty fast, with good handling characterstics which are more important to me then numbers.  It points up very naturally and there was no curve to shooting the bow well... Ive shot it well since Jim dropped it off.

Initially the brace was set at 7-3/4", but in tuning im running it just over 7 now and its still as quiet as it was at the higher brace, so thats where im gonna stick on brace... right around 7-1/8" - 7-1/4".

Enough of my rambling here are some pics-

thanks guys,  and I still cant get over how quiet this bow is.... right there with the "D" type bows.

Bouncing back and forth in my head to wrap the grip or not.

I find no fault with that bow at all. I love that cocabola , the maple veneers and the brace profile. It just looks like it ought to look all over.
God bless and Happy New Year, Steve

Matt,

Best Siren i've seen of Jim s.  Like the mods to the handle and I think a Big Jim Beavertail grip would make the perfect contrast. Jim installed a beautiful Chocolate brown one that was perfect with my Cocobolo, here a couple of pic's of the grip.

Again beautiful bow, and Jim's a great guy, never dealt with him on a bow but have spoken with him a few times at the Howard Hill Classic's i've been too and very pleasant to talk with.

Nice Siren Lamey. I have had several. Just got my newest one several weeks ago. 60" 53@28 all mahogany with a few accents stripes. I got blood on it yesterday evening. Deer was at 15 yards and never knew the arrow was on the way.

thanks fellas, funny you posted pic of the beavertail grip, I was telling Jim that I would like to get it b/t wrapped. Ive never done a b/t wrap,  but plenty of regular "cowhide".

Matt,

The beavertail is the Bomb! Just a sure grip even wet, it really has improved my grip consistency, and Big Jim did a great job (while at the HH Classic this past year).

Jim makes beautiful bows. I shoot with a couple of friends regularly during the 3D season and the both shoot Black Creek bows.  They are amazingly quiet... even without anything on the string.
You have a fine bow there.

yeah... I think im going to get in touch with Big Jim and see if he can wrap it at the "pre spring" arrow fling at Tannehill.

Should have been out hunting this AM with it, but sick as a dog... when I finally get some time to hunt ;-(

Lovely bow. This one has a profile that reminds me of omega longbow.  And thank you for not just posting pics of the riser.

... and again, thanks.  I really am still very impressed with just how silent the bow is and how well it points.  I know im going on and on about the silent factor, but really this has to be the quietest bow of the many, many, ive owned/shot.

Any how, if im feelin better i will get some hunting time this week here in Alabama, and will be taking it to S. Texas in a few weeks.

You're killing me, Matt. It's hard enough waiting for the new Siren without you posting all these pics. :-) Very nice bow. Mine will be gray action wood with a cocobolo strip in the riser, and black glass limbs. I'm thinking a brown action wood sibling would be a nice addition to my cabinet.
