Title: Suggestions for an Inexpensive 1 Piece Recurve...@45 pounds...
Post by: Nala on December 26, 2012, 03:35:00 AM
Hey all,

Great news for me!!  My 21 year old nephew has moved in for a while.  Everything he has done in the great outdoors has been because of me.  Fishing, small game hunting, target shooting of all kinds, boating, jet-skis, you name it and I took him to do it.  Now I am going to add one more....HOG HUNTING.

Up until now I was looking at hunting by myself.  I don't know about most of you, but I would much rather have a buddy to go hunting with.  I mentioned a bit about my plans to him and he was excited about the prospect.

The only cost for me is a bow for him to use.  He shoots mine pretty well, but I too have to have something to shoot.  I thought a decent recurve would be best.

I have thought about another Vintage Bear, a Samick Stingray, Samick Volcano and a couple more less attractive bows.  I do have to operate on a budget so I am looking for something relatively inexpensive.

Do you all have any ideas or suggestions on what I should take a look at?  I wouldn't mind USED either as long as it is in pretty decent shape and shoots well.

Any suggestions would be great.

Thanks for the time and help.

I would look for a used Bear recurve as my first pick, but I'll be honest the Samick Sage recurve is a pretty darn good bow.

Look in the Trandgang classified section.  I'm sure you can find something within your budget.

Samick Sage is actually a darn good bow for the money.  I learned to shoot on one.

Yeah, I don't know how you could go wrong with a Samick Sage, but it's not a one piece like you said. Several of the sponors have consignment bow lists on there websites where you can find some of the brands mentioned and then the classifieds are good on here too

Search the local auction site too. I find older brownings and bears often on them. Also, I haven't tried it yet but maybe find one on " the list of craig," (hope that passes lol), post it here, and get others input if you like the bow.

Samick bear or browning, or even Shakespeare or wing.  All good choices

I saw an older Pearson in the classifieds recently for $40.00. It was a little scratched up, but definitelt usable, and they were great old bows. Just be patient and check the classifieds often.

Another vote for Pearson's. they're good bows and usually not as pricey as Bears.

I've got an old Pearson Gamester that shoots as good as anything I have.

All good advice. I just bought a Samick Sage for my grandaughter for Christmas and spent the week before setting it up and shooting it. I'm impressed for a relatively inexpensive bow how well it shoots and quiet too.

Any of the older classics are good choices too.

I also vote for a Samick Sage.....great bow, well made, shoots good and won't break the bank.......my grown daughter shoots a 35# one and her husband has a 45#er and they both love them....

I found a Damon Howatt Coronado recurve for cheap on my local Craigslist... then bought another for 60 bucks off of the classifieds.  The are old, inexpensive but throw arrows pretty well.

I would check the Classifieds daily, you can find a real good bow that he could shoot for a real long time for a reasonable cost. Recurve or longbow....nothing wrong with used stuff!!     Good to see someone taking him under their wing!

I don't like Samick bows. In your case I would take a look at a Omega bow. That is not a recurve, but a Hybride longbow. Proudly made in the US, by someome who knows his stuff.

Almost any vintage bow will fit the bill nicely, I just happen to like the Howatt's...Howatt Hunter would work nicely.

I would definitely pick up a nice used one.  If you're price sensitive seek out a Pearson.  They shoot GREAT and even though I have a nice little collection of Bears I think Pearson is way under rated.

Otherwise you can't miss with Bear, Browning, Howatt, Shakespeare, AMF, Wing....you get the point.  They have all killed a ton of stuff over the years and still do now.

I have a near mint condition Browning Wasp in 56" length and 45@28, RH ....$175+Shipping to your door.

I always recommend Browning Wasp or Nomad Stalkers as great first bows, backup bows or youth/learner bows...come in lower weights...35-50 usually...fast shooters...great bows...and not as high priced as the bears but underrated in my opinion....

Wasp is on far left in this pictures.

I would suggest a vintage bow. If things don't work out you can sell it for what you paid for it if you don't pay too much to begin with.  Any of the well know makes would work. Just make sure the draw range is right and the lims ar't warped. It would be best to have your nephew try it in person to see how it fits him and if it suits his draw length.
