Title: Getting someone started....
Post by: nnaiden on December 25, 2012, 08:23:00 PM
Hi all, Merry Christmas to every one.  I'm throwing this out there, for while starting someone in traditional archery is a specialized subject, it is also a broad subject that affects the activity for every one.
A young man, 22, slight of build, wants a longbow for Christmas.  I'm guessing  light in weight 40 - 45 pounds.   Yes, I'm trolling the classifieds, but also wanted to toss it to the community for ideas or thoughts - many times people have a light bow in the closet which may need a new home.

Best wishes to all.   Noelle Naiden

Wish I had something to offer up.  Is the young man right or left handed?  Always enjoyed your writing Noelle!  Good to see you posting!

The big auction site has a few 40# longbows up for sale.  I prefer dealing with Trad Gang members when possible, but sometimes, you can't find what you want.

40-45 pounds should be perfect for the young man to start with.  Light enough to learn proper form, yet strong enough to hunt with if he chooses to.  I wish I had something here that would work.  Hopefully someone else will.

It was a pleasant suprise to see your post Noelle.  Your wonderful writings are missed, and would love to see you around here from time to time again.  Good for you in taking the time to help get a young man started on his journey in traditional!

If you can talk him into a recurve there are always lots of old bears, wings, pearsons etc. going for a resonable rate. Would probably be easier to find than a longbow. Just a suggestion.

If the classifieds forum doesn't have what you are looking for, check some of the sponsor's websites.  They often have light bows in good shape for $100-$200.

Noelle, if he wants a longbow and you can't find used on the classifieds or 'bargain' site, look into Maddog bows OR check out the longbow offerings by Samick or Greatree.  I just sold a Greatree lefty 40# longbow that I owned as a 'form' bow in my collection and lemme say, for being made overseas it was a nice little shooter, VERY smooth, accurate and decently made.  They can be had brand new for 189-199 depending on the model.  Samick I believe makes some similar bows for similar money.  Def check out Maddog bows though for made in the USA quality/keepin it local, he makes some great lighter bows for a real affordable price.  Good luck!
