Title: Very sad news
Post by: Al Snow on January 18, 2007, 12:48:00 PM
It's being reported on another site that Dal Lowrey of Kansas has passed away after a long struggle with complications from heart surgery last spring.

I know many of you remember him, and his signature sign off:

"Friend of the little man, enemy of none."

Rest in peace, Dal

Dal was one of the first traditional archers I every had the pleasure to meet.  Shot with him a few times, discussed bows with him a few times also.  I went to Spearhead Ranch on his recomendation, it was one of his favorite places.
He will be missed.

Here is what I wrote on the LW:
I am stunned. We lost a GREAT LW'er today. Over the years I have seen a few like Dal leave us. Over on the Trad Gang we lost Barb and on the Widow Wall we lost Scotty to a drunk driver.

The internet has opened the world up to us increasing our community. I guess with the pleasure of that growth we open ourselves up to the pain of a loss.

I will really miss Dal Lowrey and I will pray for him and his family. This hurts.

Rest in peace Brother!

Bill Wright

Terry, You think you could post the Pic of Dal on the first  page, on top of the forum for a few day ???? Kind of a rememberance????
Dal was one of the very first guys on the other site that helped me out when I first began. I would have worried most people to death with all the questions I PM'ed him about... But he always seemed to be more then willing to teach me and explain things to me. To me Dal is really what the heart and Soul of Traditional Archery is all about.... Something the other ways of hunting are lacking....
God Bless and keep you in his loving arms.

I never had the pleasure of actually meeting Dal other than through the internet.  The Dakota in my Avatar pic was one he bought from Bob, and I picked up from him about a month after he got it.  The man went through some very nice bows!

My recent hunt on Shiloh Ranch was actually put together by him.  It was supposed to be a "Black Widow" hunt.  Unfortunately he was unable to make the hunt in the physical sense, but I know he was there in spirit...

You will be sorely missed Dal, get after them in the happy hunting ground, and prayers to your family and all of your friends for the loss...

The replies to this thread show the overall appreciation of the trad community of Dal Lowery, and rightly so. I never met him or actually talked to him, but sent a few messages back and forth. I admired his wisdom and willingness to give advise. I also admired how he was not afraid to speak his mind and stand his ground on controversial topics on this site and others. He was a good man.

I am happy to see his Spearhead ranch picture posted, it was clear that was a place he really loved and felt at peace. Hopefuly his family will see this and see how many people cared for and respected Dal.

Dal not only liked his Widows and Morrisons, he was also into Howard Hill bows.  Some of his best posts were about the virtues and nuances of 'tests' he'd done on the many sticks he owned through the years, complete with photos, descriptions and of course opinions....always offered with a healthy enthusiasm.  You could feel the passion he had for stickbows, and for shooting.  The man practiced archery like his hair was on fire and his fettish for fine bows was a bucket of water, lol.  Geez, I'm going to miss him.

P.S.  The longbow in that photo of Dal is a little 58" Morrison Cougar that I purchased from him after his antelope hunt...and promptly blew a slam-dunk shot at a whitetail with, lol.  I still have a wall souvenir of that shot...a section of sapling centered with the imbedded broadhead that stopped inches from the deer's vitals.  I no longer have the bow, but the hunting memory will always remain and so will my fond rememberances of how it came to be.  Here's to you, Dal.

Terrible sad news.  Me and Dal used to joust a bit back in the early days of the LW.  Then on the Widow Wall and again here.  I never imagined from his initial descriptions of his health and the operation itself that this could be be the outcome.  I always figured he'd pull through and be back shooting again.

Cheers my friend.

Dal and I responded to one another a couple of times over the years. We had much in common. We were around the same age, shot the same bows, retired around the same time. I always respected what he had to say and always looked forward to hearing from him. He will be sadly missed. My heart goes out to his family and all that knew him.
