Any of you guys into taking video of your hunts?Got my Go Pro white edition and got the tripod mount from GO Pro.Then I found a bow mount made for compounds but it clamps great on my JD Berry Vixen.Havent shot with it yet, need to stuff my bag and Ill let you know how it goes Aloha.

I've used a little Sony cam on a few of my hunts, with a swing out arm mounted to the tree.  It works ok, but with both hands needed for the bow, it's often hard make sure the camera is in the right position to capture the action (misses, in my case).   :o

A friend of mine uses a bow mounted camera, but the shock of actually shooting makes the footage real jumpy (but he's still using a training wheels bow).  He also has to remember to try to keep pointing the bow at the animal after the shot.

Let me know how it works out for you!

I put one on my DALAA for snowshoe hare hunting with my old beagle.  You can't see very far with that wide-angle lens but I am trying to get some footage of my little girl hunting before she passes on so I will be able to go back and remember the good times with her.

Here's a short vid of me shooting when I just got my GOPRO earlier this year. Using the head mount rig.

So that's what it looks like when shooting right handed.

I thought about getting one of these cameras. I think they would be a gas to have when doing spot and stalk hog hunting. It would really put the viewer in the driving seat.

Martin, did you have the camera pointing forward on your head or angled to the left a little?

Gatekeeper, I had the camera over my left eye. Thru trial and error I found the right spot for a more or less centered frameup.

Lonala,
She's still with me, but she can't hunt for more than an hour or so without getting too sore and wore out.  It is hard to see her getting older, but then again I ain't what I once was!  LOL.  I gotta look around for a new pup this spring.  I can't wait to smell that "puppy breath!"

I like my GoPro.  You can change the settings in order to not make it  as wide.  Good for trad bow ranges, but images get small past 20 yards.  It worked great this year inside a turkey blind as I got to vid a buddy of mine missing twice.  Gives a different perspective.

When Mr Gregg dudley get a minute he may chime in. He's used one on his widow I believe.

I've studied the GoPro pretty closely, but have thus far not purchsed one. I've also concluded that it's not very well suited to capturing bow shots on game beyond very close ranges. What they seem to do extremely well is (of course) close-up video work, and I think they're darned good a capturing a pov (point of view) video during active pursuits. I'm talking about hiking, running, boating, swimming, fishing, surf play and just interacting with others. I'd love to have one while hunting in Alaska, as I think it would be great for videoing camp life, hiking/stalking, wading rivers, flying in the Super Cub, and maybe big animals up close such as moose or caribou. Conversely, I suspect I'd almost never use it for anything deer hunting, except possibly the recovery.

As Izzy said, I have played with one that I mounted on the bowfishing buoy adapter that muzzy sells.  The adapter screws into the accessory/stabilizer hole.

Long story short...it's not what it is made for.

Kayaking fishing, zip lining, surfing, other forms of close in first person adventure... That's where a go pro shines.

A couple of hunting shows are using go pros for the shot of the shooter/bow/second angle during a shot sequence.  It is a cool effect.  It is a fun thing to play with for sure, but it is not a great choice for detail work beyond ten or twelve yards.

Ten yard hogs on the ground would be cool.  Mount the camera on YOU instead of the bow unless you want to see some vibration.

I posted this last year. Had the GoPro mounted on my chest for the first part of this, then set it on a tripod for the last part. I plan on taking it on a spring bear hunt later this year. It is a great little camera, and the quality is very good for such a tiny unit.

i received a Hero3 Black Edition for Christmas, and I'm just in the getting-acquainted stages. I still don't believe this camera is well suited to capturing video of arrows in flight toward game beyond 10 yards. The detail is amazing...it's the magnification which is lacking. I have no real plans to use it to capture a bow shot, but it will be outstanding at capturing general action, scenes and movement. It will definitely accompany me on future hunting adventures, except for local whitetails.

I just had it mounted inside my truck for a couple days during which we had a significant snowfall. I shot several video segments while driving around in all the fresh snow...and it really impressed me. I definitely need to take it on future trips to Alaska, Hawaii and Montana....Arizona too!

I've been working on a backcountry stickbow DVD the past couple of years. Here is a screen shot from a buck I shot in Colorado this year. I had it set on wide angle, so it really fish-eyes the subject. Next time I'll make sure the setting is different.

I have a ContourROAM (competitor to the Go Pro HD) and it too suffers from needing the focal point of the video to be at close range; just not great at capturing small subjects beyond the 10 yard range.  It too doesn't have a zoom option.  Very easy on/off slider though (in fact, a bit too easy as sometimes it gets turned on inside my pack by accident, draining the battery, heh).

I have begun experimenting with the video settings on my H3. The 1080p x 48fps x 'medium' (angle) produced a very nice video image under motion. It would be much easier to see game or follow an arrow (again, short range) on the medium angle setting. I'm next going to try the same resolution & speed settings but with a narrow angle. I suspect this might be the setting most useful for detail beyond 10-15 yards.

I'm decidedly not a video junkie, but I really enjoy the 'take me along with you' video footage so often missing in videos. Many focus on the animals or the shot/kill...but they are missing so much good stuff. The GoPro just might solve that for me.

I have a Contour POV camera and also went through the whole process of finding the best place to mount it. Anywhere that captures the shot without vibration of the shot (attached to my body rather than the bow) wasn't good for consistent viewing of the animal. Attached to the bow was good but really suffered at shot time. I ended up building a plate on top of my armguard so the camera is on my forearm looking down the arrow. Seems to work alright!

Here's a pic of mine. Due to the camera angle, the Contour looks huge in this pic but is actually a very small camera (http://i645.photobucket.com/albums/uu178/ryanderlago/fallbearsandarmmount015.jpg)

It does vibrate at the shot...less than on the bow, but more than on the head or chest!

Ryan that looked good to me. I'm not looking for academy awards  :)

You owned that buck!!

My wife bought me a GoPro Black for Christmas. I haven't had a chance to use it outdoors yet but I've got the Wifi working so I can use the remote or my Droid to change settings and view subjects through on a bigger screen. I can't wait to try it out on a hunt!!!

I know that distance is an issue but most of my shots are inside 20 yards and with the Wifi the camera could be setup over a window between me and the shot and turned on with a remote. I am going to experiment and may end up with more than one for angles....  New toy!!!!

I have a GoPro hero 2. I mounted it to the side of my bow. Wasnt happy with the noise or the fact that I drop my bow after the shot. I now use the headstrap like MartinD.Great video but you do lose some quality at further distances. what I like is that you can video POV,Wide angle< and 720 slow motion. The slow motion is really cool when you shoot lighted nocks when it starts to get dark. If you have any other questions IM me. Victor

How is the contour with longer distances? and did you have to make the mount for your arm or did you buy it?

I think the newer Contour may have a zoom or magnification? Not sure though? I made the mount out of a plastic cutting board and attached it to the armguard with zip ties. The armguard straps go around the arm and attach to the other side of the plastic plate.

Neat thanks for the extra pic.  I am looking for an inexpensive camera to just play around with hunting and fishing.  Nothing professional.  I just don't know what to get yet.

I've been thinking about this lately. This thread is very enlightening!  I've been using a miniture Sony HD camera with the fold-out viewing screens. It is more fragile (I suppose) than the GoPro. To date though I haven't captured a shot because I've always been photographing a different shooting lane than the one the deer is in.

Just always think of these mini action and POV (point of view) cameras as not offering much detail visibility unless you are very close to the subject. Mine is really impressing me with its ability to capture action. It definitely gives the viewer a feeling of being part of what's happening. Having both hands free is a huge plus in terms of carrying on with normal activities while videoing. The H3 camera I received also takes very impressive 12 MP pictures. These can be done in single images, photo bursts, or delayed timer shots with multiple images. The menu settings provide way more customization than I ever imagined. I've never owned any of the earlier generation GoPro units, but I was told that the H3 generation is dramatically changed to improve functionality and performance.

Kevin, have you tried to use the smart phone app and sync the camera to the iphone so you use the phone as a remote to operate the camera and also the phone screen acts as a monitor to see what the camera is looking at?

Don, I haven't tried that (yet). I've read that it works well for some, but others have not been as pleased. My H3 Black has the WiFi control unit, so I don't really need the phone app. I also ordered a TouchLCD back, which will let me see what I'm videoing from behind the camera. I will use that fairly sparingly...mainly for handheld video jobs. My WiFi control works perfectly thus far. I've got a number of other GoPro accessories on the way. The way I see it, this camera offers me just what I've been missing: the ability to shoot action video while doing almost anything else simultaneously.

Just saw the most amazing footage that has given me some great ideas for these little cameras.  NASCAR teams are mounting H3s all over the cars that they are testing in Daytona right now to see what is happening under the car to the tires and suspension and drivetrain.  Can't wait till they get small enough to put on an arrow!

Good footage, but as some others have asked, I'd like to see the footage with a shot.  A friend has one mounted on the stabilizer of his wheelie and it really gets ugly at the shot.

Oh, and what you call a 'little buck' would have definitely been a shooter for me!

Thanks for sharing!  :archer:

Steve...

I thought about mounting my GoPro at ground level and pointing to the area I would shoot a deer. The WiFi remote would easily turn on the camera and start up the video recording. Imagine the video view: Looking slightly up the deer from 10 yards away, and watching it react to the bowshot.

That would be cool, Kevin.   I am watching this thread closely, and my son Kory and I have been toying with the idea of buying one of the GoPro's....I just wondered about the wide-angle effect too.

Howdy Mark,

The H3 Black Edition (what I own) has multiple settings to help negate the 'fisheye' effect. You can effectively narrow the field of view x 2 steps and obtain (close to) a normal perspective. I think these units have great potential for the ground-stalking longbow or recurve guy, who has to get close anyway.

I got the hero3 silver for Christmas and it keeps freezing. You guys have any problems like that? I got the updates installed but it won't do anything but turn on and that's sometimes, unless I take the battery out and let it sit for awhile.
