Got to go back and hunt the ranch where Glory Hogs II was Filmed; for those of you unfamiliar the video can be ordered from South Cox at Stalker Bows-he is a sponsor here. The ranch is 5000 acres of unfenced Pig paradise-no feeders, no enclosures, just Northern California ranch country at it's finest.
Although it had rained a few days before the leaves were hard and crunchy underfoot, we-Bob Larson (famous ranch manager and hunter extraordinaire) were doing our darnest to be quiet while working a bedding area, creeping about and glassing the brush for patches of fur. Shhhh!
There is heavy fog in the air and every leaf is a thunder crack! All of a sudden the stillness is interrupted by baying hounds closing in; three of Bob's dogs had dug out of their area and were quickly closing in on us not wanting to miss out on any action. Within seconds black and white missiles are streaking all about "you guys are doing it right but you are in the wrong place"; and no need to be quiet anymore either! LOL
If we tried to return the dogs it would be dark by the time we got back on the hogs so we decided on a dog hunt instead. The pigs on the ranch get little pressure, they are unafraid of dogs and don't associate them with hunters whom they do avoid. Presently the dogs announce they have found a pig and we better hurry. Soon we are in the right area and the dogs are keeping a decent boar busy; two of the dogs are very experienced and the third is a young hound; but he was at a "dog blessing" about a month before-yeah, no fooling! Sorta like "I have no clue but I did stay at a Holiday Inn last night" ?
The pig is holding its ground with the dogs some 20 feet away, unaware that we are on the scene and I have an arrow nocked. The shot is about 30 feet, over a log and a coupla' branches in the way. Pick a spot, pick a spot, pick a spot the arrow is on the mark-the hog explodes for about 20 yards and goes down-even if he could have gone further the dogs would have held him in place. There are huge patches of blood on the ground-no need to practice blood trailing. We are far from a vehicle and miles from the ranch buildings, we gut the boar and haul him down to the lake about a half hour away.
Anybody up for a pic?

Saw this on the PBS site....nice job, Bjorn! As to "who" is ugliest...well, at least you've managed to crack a smile. He wins...I think.

Nicely done. The hog's definitely uglier. :bigsmyl:
I'd rather not commit.
NICE PIG Bjorn!!!! :clapper:
Congrats Bjorn! Great story and good shooting! As to the ugliest... let's see, you've got a longbow and a dead hog in a boat on a foggy morning... that's just a pretty picture!
Great story! Thanks for sharing!
Great story Bjorn! Really good picture too. As for who's ugliest ... the hog is deceased and, well ... you know they fix them up so nice nowadays ... with the hair and make-up it's just hard for a fella to compete. Don't take it hard, I'm sure the hog was much uglier in real life. Lol.
Nice job - looks like you got some exercise too!
Nice hog Bjorn!
It's an even tie :biglaugh: Congratulations
That's just great! You and the pig, look JUST MAHVELOUS!!
nice hog, good job
Some times opportunities just happen, and you must take them when they come along. Nice hog, and boy do you look wore out.

NICE hog Bjorn  CONGRATS on a AWESOMEEEE hunt :clapper:
Nice piggie, Bjorn!
How is the pig population out there? With the acorn crop this year, I'll bet they are very fat and sleeping in the chamise during the day. Anybody up and moving around during the daylight hours? Looking forward to my hunt in January!
Mark
Thats a bruiser congrats Bjorn. As far as uglier, its hard to tell you both have the same smile :biglaugh: just kidding. Ive never hunted behind dogs, i bet that was exciting.
Well...you know the old saying "we start to look like our spouse or our pets?" Doubt it's true with the animals we shoot...you're as handsome as ever!
Good story, nice job Bjorn!
Kris
Nice Boar, congrats! Twins?
Cool story! Great hog!
Great hog! Sounds like a grand hunt!
Both look great, and you're cleaner!
Mark the pig population is doing well it is hard not to get into them. Yes some are lounging in the chemise and some are up eating, screaming and humping all the time! It is a blast as you well know! The place is booked solid and no cancellations unfortunately. Have a good hunt next month. :archer2:
Looks like a happy hunter to me, nice pig.
Good job!
Photos looks great to me! I have been hunting Lake Sonoma for the first time this year. Have put in some good dirt time, done lots of canoeing and tracking, glassing for hours, and seen some hogs from far off, but still have yet to connect.
Lots of guys hunting there...But I hope to put in the extra effort and dedication. If I get tired and save up some extra money I will be hitting up that ranch though.
Looks like a tie to me also!!!
Thanks, Bjorn. I can hardly wait.......
Nice looking animal. Now, who's the guy on the right? :bigsmyl:
Well Done....I don't know who has a better smile :dunno:
Long story made short, my german shorthair pointer turned pig catcher for about a week back several years ago.I always think about that dog when I think hog hunting- nice pig, congrats.. The pigs the one on the right, correct? Just pigin on ya, i mean just picking on ya
Awespme hog!!!!!!
Great story Bjorn. a couple pretty rugged characters in that photo. I'd call it a toss up on looks... :biglaugh:
Nice shooting Bjorn! That pig looks like he's got all the hardware to be scary if he wanted to be. Do a full story of your hunt with a few more pics of the countryside if you have time. Sounds like a great hunt at a really interesting place!

:clapper: :clapper: :clapper:
BOHO is that Rosie Odonell ? :scared:
Congrats on the hog! One question, I'm a canoe enthusiast on top of my archery obsession. At first glance I thought you were in a "Tripper" (by Old Town), one of my faves. Then I did a double-take and saw "Clipper", a model I'm not familiar with. Looked like Western canoeing by the small print, but my eyes are gone. Do you know if that's the maker? Thanks!
Gotta love the dogs. Sounds like a great time.  Congrats.
olddogrib: I don't recall the canoe maker; I do know it is a company in BC. It is a tough old canoe but nowhere near the rigidity of an Old Town.
