There have been several posted here on sharpening Sharks, here's another. The 10",3 -sided Jewelstik has a 6-32NC threaded bushing in the end. I made a guide rod by cutting approx. 5/8ths of an inch of 6-32NC threads onto an appropriate diameter rod(check the Irwin charts)and loc-titing a couple nuts at the end of the threaded section. Screw the guide rod into the end of the Jewelstik and you use it with a standard Lansky system clamp. I got good results with the 30 degree angle slot, as the hone surfaces are offset from the centerline of the rod and I'm guesstimating you're actually sharpening at about 25 degrees. I marked the edge with a sharpie first to verify I was removing metal at the edge and did not need to repro-file with a half-round file(to which I've also welded a guide rod). I finished by stropping on leather embedded with jeweler's rouge glued to a 3" wooden dowel. This tip came from Ron @ KME. That's real customer service when you provide advice on improving your competitor's products! He can advise on making the mods to do this same thing with the KME system.
could we see pics of your creation???
Good tip Richard.
Simmons heads are in my future. I'm just gonna finish out the season with what I have and then see which weight Simmons head to get first.
Hope you are well. 3D is coming up soon.
You know, I was just wondering why the Lansky system doesn't have a half round option for Simmons (and other) concave BHs. I'm going to try your idea! Thanks.
Justin,
I wouldn't call it a creation (otherwise I'd apply for a patent, LOL) and there's not much to see. Most folks are familiar with fixed angle sharpening aids, which is the key to sharpening anything. Standard Lansky's are $25 @ Wallyworld. The frustrating part is, to my knowledge all their hones are flat. None offer half-round or radiused which you need for a head with a concave profile like Sharks. The Jewelstik fits that bill, my suggestion merely suggests making a compatible 6" guide rod to fit it. Let me say that my 10", 3-sided Jewelstik works fine, but is overkill regarding length. A shorter one would be better, if they offer 3-sided with the threaded bushing in the end. I know the Stubby doesn't. (somebody that has one chime in and let us know) I also forgot to mention that I do finish with a Lansky white or blue sapphire stone at 30 degrees before stropping. Their stones are flat but narrow enough that the edges will make contact and de-burr nicely.

The 3 sided Jewelstick used to come with a threaded rod like that. BILL
I USE THE JEWELSTICK TO SHARPEN MY CENTUAR BIG GAME HEADS. ONCE YOU GET A GOOD FEELING FOR IT THEY CAN BE DONE BY HAND WITH AMAZING RESULTS.
nicely done!!!
justin
im a simple guy. I just use the 9 dollar accu-sharp you can buy everywhere. It works good and is portable, just in case you accidently drop it in the dirt( missed shot)
i use that exact same method to do my newly acquired tiger sharks!! bullfrog is correct,my jewelstik is maybe 7 yrs. old and came with a guide rod.
as a side note jewelstik offers a 4" 3 sided jewelstik that has a guide rod recepticle in the end, don't know if a guide rod is included or not but you can call 1-814-683-4762 and ask about item fs-123. that should be the bomb for doing sharks!!! good luck!
I got mine from a chef's supply site and it didn't come with one, maybe that's why I got the good discount price w/free shipping, LOL! If they're still available with the rod, that's definitely the way to go. Comparison shop on the web, I saw prices/shipping terms vary as much as $25.
I have to try that,,,, also get light and medium grit emery cloth and glue the back while holding flat when it starts to set roll an old arrow shaft across it like your putting on an arrow wrap and let it over lap till it s all on.. do this with all the grits and these work great too in getting a super sharp edge or just maintaining it.
I did something similar to sharpen them,I bought half round coarse, and fine files and welded the long shafts on them to use with my lanskey type sharpener,(mine is a smiths).I glued leather on 1 of them also for final stropping. It worked very well.
TTT
Nice. I will try that one. I have been using a flat file and round ceramic.
Called Hewlett Mfg (they make the Jewelstik) and they sent me (free) several rods that screw into the Jewelstik so you can use it with the Lansky. Nice bunch of folks!
