I am in the market for a classic D shape longbow in the 66" to 68" length and was wondering what bow builder out there makes one of the finest shooting bows in a classic D shape? Any thoughts or photos would be greatly appreciated!
-
northern mist, sunset Hill, howard hill, dave johnson, david miller, omega bows.
-
Whippenstick!
-
Yellowstone.
-
Northern Mist
-
Dan Toelke has built a reputation primarily with his d/r Whip longbow but his Super Ds are exceptional. They are faster than most and like all Dan's bows are extremely well mannered and quieter than quiet. I like them so much I have ended up shooting them about 90% of the time.
-
Yep, Dan's Super D for me, but try all of them and you choose which one best fits you.
-
Northern Mist and Toelke are just 2 of many.....try all you can and the one you shoot well is the best one for you!
-
Finest I have ever personally shot is the 68" Fox Triple Crown Carbon made by Ron King of Fox Archery in Oregon. Incredibly smooth and accurate, and his craftsmanship is second to none.
Mark
-
Craig Ekin should have it figured out by now, as does David Miller and Steve Turay. Not a bad bow in the group.
-
Mohawk or Robertson Purist.
-
:archer:
-
James of J D Berry Archery has been building some of the finest D-shaped longbow for 32 years now. You can see is work on is web www.jdberryarchery.com (http://www.jdberryarchery.com)
-
Check out the new D-style model called the "Tribute " on the Bama bows website very nice looking d style longbow! Nates also builds d-style in his Hunter model, Royal and Elite Classic models! Hunter starts at $379 w black glass limbs!
-
I think Northern Mist. I was checking out another guys Shelton model on Sunday while rabbit hunting. It was beautiful, and silent.
-
Here we go again...
-
My hunting buddy Mike Robin (Bamboo)builds a D shape longbow that is smooth, stable and quick. Shoot him a PM....
-
Don't make a final decision without checking out Vince Migliorato's Mohawk bows, especially the Sparrowhawk.
-
Another vote for the Toelke Super D.
-
Kohannah Windwalker and Mohawk bows are great D shaped bows. Ken
-
Agree with dan. Jdberry bows. Whether u want a straitend bow. Or a slight reflex/deflex. I have shot most of the models from the 2 american styles to numerous of his r/d bows. They are all awesome. Love my berrys.
-
Fred Anderson Skookum
-
I'd bet most will say a Hill. Checking that thread out that is. That thing is growing like the national debt. :knothead:
-
I dont think you could ever narrow it down to just one.I like Anderson Skookum,G.N Critter Gitter,Dwyer original,Fredericks,Saluki Grandeur,Berry,Mohawk.
-
If I could do it all over again it would be a Dwyer
-
My favorite are GN critter gitters... I also like JD Berry and Northern Mist
-
JD Berry.Best craftsmanship i've seen. And for the money and service he cant be beat.
-
Dwyer original.
-
Same as Bullfrog,Dwyer Original, but,I do love my Stewart RD,Northern mist superior and sometime this week new to me JD Berry Rennaisance.
-
Personal preference really...I like Steve Turay's bows and Vince Migliorado made me a sweet shooting Mohawk..either one of those should serve you well
-
Gus Delagaffo's "Longriver" Hill style bows are superlative.....beautiful and stellar performers...for 30 years as well...

I love my Dwyer, though it's an R/D. If you want a Hill...David Miller gets my vote! I recently got an Old Tom and can't believe the elegance and finish on it. Always good things to be heard about Northern Mist as well. If you want pics of a Miller I'd be happy to email some to you, send me a PM with addy if you want.
-
These are not "Classics" yet... but they are definitely "D" shaped NFAA/IBO regulation long bows.

Dwyer original, i have a beautiful one, the wife had made for me.
-
If you are looking for a one piece or two piece takedown I would go with a Mohawk. The new Tomahawk Legacy series bracies up to a true d shape but is a pretty aggresive deflex reflex bow (and by the way it is one heck of a shooter)!
-
Gus Delgaffo does not seem to be on the web, any info?

EagleWing Frontier 66 Foreward riser carbon string follow longbow 66 in. Available with locket socket 2 piece or one piece.

Herb Meland, Pronghorn Custom Bows, builds a super nice D style in 64 and 66" lengths. Sweet shooters!
-

The "Nighthawk", Herb Meland, Pronghorn bows. This is my 66". Very little handshock. Nice shooting bow with the classic look. Very classy bow, and a great shooter, as all Herb's bows are.
-
If you want a calsic D shaped bow with a hint of R/D, I think a Welte Deathwish can not be beat by any bowyer for smoothness, accuracy, fit and finish, it is a flawless bow.
If one is looking for a Hill stle longbow then ones choice is more difficult. Perhaps Northern Mist (Steve Turay) is best with his Shelton string follow design. It is so smooth on both the draw and release, yet it is as fast as a back set bow ... without hand shock! His bow is perfect in fit and finish and classically narrow limbed yet deep cored, this bow will hurl heavy arrows with surprising velocity. All this performance and super quiet as well. A Northern Mist Shelton is hard to beat.
Bob.
-
Mighty purdy bow there Shedrock.
Everybody is different and what bow feels right to one archer might not be satisfactory to another.
IMO don't think any one is a clear winner. Most of what I have shot I could only detect subtle differences from one brand bow to another.
With that said I would have to say Northern Mist by Steve Turay has a slight advantage over the ones I have shot which is most of the big names and a few unknown bowyers that can hold thier own.
-
Howard Hill and Northern Mist get my vote. I have a few others that are pretty much the classic D shape when strung--or nearly so but show some D/R when unstrung. "Best" is definitely subjective.
-
I bought a Mohawk Sparrowhawk from Vince. Very accurate and smooth draw. And great guy to deal with.
-
Definitely no one best one out there. Only one that suits you the best. Never tried a pronghorn long enough for my draw, but I have heard good things. Lots of folks swear by the mohawks. For me, the best combination of speed, smoothness, silence, and lack of shock in a mild d/r d-shaped longbow is a toelke super d. My critter gitter is pretty nice, but could ideally be a few inches longer for my draw. Nice bow, though. Can't believe they decided to stop making them.
-
I had one of Dan Toelke's D bows. It had bamboo limbs and a bumbinga riser. Very sweet bow, another one of those kick in the backside. I was dumb and traded it off. Should of kept it.
-
Here is a good close up of how Dan layers his cores on his Super D. These are all tapered to the tips also. Smooth shooter even with light arrows.

I just got the Hill style bug and went with a Northern Mist Shelton. I absolutly love it. It's smooth drawing and has no hand shock. I'm amazed how well I can shoot it already. Steve builds a fine bow!
-
I have a soft spot for My Mohawks. Allan Boice's Liberty's are shooting machines. :goldtooth:

I aquired a Fred Anderson Skookum special longbow recently. Its a new 2012 bow and rare find.I have owned probably 50 mild R&D bows that string into a D shape. So many good bows in this catagory.
This Skookum Special is the pinnacle of over 50 years of bow making experience. It has 6 laminations.brown glass back, pre stressed uni carbon under that.Three lams of very clean pre stressed yew in the core, clear glass belly
The bow has multiple (5) overlays on the belly side of riser to form grip in yew and coco bolo.Yew and coco bolo on back of riser.Exhibition grade burl coco bolo riser.Tip overlays in polished sheep horn and white glass and black glass.Hand painted knapped arrowhead on one of the belly limbs.Chocolate colored wrapped leather grip. Not stitched.Has a seamless quality like it grew on the bow.Cobra skin arrow rest and strike plate.Gloss finish thats pefect and really makes this bow shine. Its marked "Fast and Furious" and signed by Fred Anderson. The bow came with a book signed by Mr.Anderson and authored by him.
Its an exquisite and very elegant piece that ozzes with perfection!!!
Its 68 inches and 46 #s at 29.It came with a 14 strand B-50 string. Its a sweet shooting bow and very smooth on the draw and release. Its soft in that hand, lightning fast and dead accurate.
This bows an heirloom and the finest crafted bow I have seen or owned.I believe this ones a keeper to be handed down to my boy.I think I will put my name on this one someday.Which is something I rarely do.Maybe some gold ink!
-
There you have it, 30 of the "Best" D shaped bows out there. As others have said, you'll have to find what's best for you. There are a lot of very good ones out there. Good luck.
-
Mohawk, Northern Mist, BamaBows.
-
Steelhead be sure and post some pics of that Skookum, maybe start a new thread with it.
-
Those Fred Anderson bows are sure keepers and an example of the best of the bowyers art.
God bless you all, Steve
-
gus Delagaffo makes a bow he calls "Longriver" bow company. His bows are sooo nice and the people who know him are the longtime trad archers. He was a fixture at denton Hill for years...!I'll try to post a pic of a lonriver "elk" model.......they are sooo nice...
-
I would have to say mine, because I made it.
-
My sparrowhawk sure is very nice , I couldnt imagine a D shaped bow that shot any better .
-
I've had/have Northern Mist Baraga's, Superiors, Classics and Sheltons. Nothing I've seen or shot has made me want to shop anywhere else for my mild D/R or Hill style longbows.
Eric
-
I can't believe that NO ONE has even mentioned Robertson Styk Bows at all ! Dick and Yote both make phenominal D shaped bows...smooth AND fast !
-
Great Northern and Northern Mist.

If you want a Salamanca rapier in bow form- David Miller all the way. One of the sweetest shooting D/Hill bows you'll every lay hands on.
-
I gave a friend a bow built by Mike Ballenger that is a 68" reverse handled R/D, the most accurate longbow I have ever shot and as quick as any normal Hill style bow plus a bit. I do not know if his current bows are this design. The JD Berry Apollo is also a bow that cover every design feature for total forgiveness plus an efficient limb design. I do not want to cause an argument, but a good R/D bow can be shot with Hill style form or any variant of it just as well as a Hill style bow. There may be some minor stability/release differences, but if that is the case, one should fix his release. While I really like my two remaining custom Hill style bows and my Schulz, the reality is that I shoot my Robertsons with the same form and get just as good a result with the advantage of having a shorter quick shooting bow at less pounds. I am not convinced that all 'D' longbow perform at all draw lengths and all poundages efficiently. I have found that very subtle differences in Hill style bows can make huge differences in how that bow works for the shooter. If you have two bows that shoot with same accuracy and feel, one longer and slow and one shorter and fast, objectivity should say that the shorter and faster bow will make a better shot in hunting conditions.

JAVAMAN, OR NORTHERN mIST....MARCO...

7 Lakes "Carolina Night" certainly qualifies,
a Hill-type string-follow bow. (http:// [img]http://i.imgur.com/7OIuubU.jpg) [/IMG]

For me it is this one. Fox Triple Crown

For fit & finish, Gus Delaghelfa's Longriver bows are a close second to San Marco. Gus did a lot of beautiful inlay work with silver & Mother of Pearl. The tippit knife is pretty plain compared to Gus's inlayed quarter moon of MOP. Not quite as hard to find. JMHO...tippit

Hill and Northern Mist are both fine bows.
-
There are so many great bowyers that make D shape bows. I currently have a Northern Mist Shelton that is excellent. I also have two Hills that are great and have a JD Berry on order. I don't think there is a "best" bow just a lot of great bows and bowyers.

LEON STEWART R/D LONGBOW.

Wouldn't be a complete list with one of Allen's Liberty Bows "Classic" LBs.
-
For a mild r/d bow that strings to a D, I like:
Leon Stewart R/D
Wallace Mountain longbow
Stratton longbow
-
Sorry to rain on anyone's parade, but how can you even think about any other D style bow with out first mentioning the Wallace MT. Dave Wallace has won 6 world championships with it. There's not one D style bow that has been mentioned, that can even come close to making a claim like that!
I would also mention the Fox Triple Crown, and Dan Toelke's Super D are hard to beat!
Just my opinion I could be wrong!
-
JD Berry, short wait, good prices, and the bows just shoot so perfect!

2X what Carcajou said....

James Berry (JD Berry) makes the best D shaped longbows I have shot...... and the price is absurd (1/2 price of other similar bows with less quality and design). He's been at it a while.
-
The best traditional D shaped longbows I have shot are made by JET Archery.
-
I have had many from just about every bowyer out there. I find Northern Mist to be my preference. I have had several Sheltons and a Whisper. I also shot Classics. Not only are they great shooters but they are relatively inexpensive.
If I were to buy a new D shaped longbow it would be a Shelton.

many great choices, and as we all know.... THERE IS NO 1 "BEST"..... its speculative at best, personal preference.

Perhaps the finding the "Best" American style longbow is a fools errand given the individual preference/mechanics involved in the best for any individual archers.
However, having said that there are definitely several bowyers that have their 10,000 hours in...
James Berry has been at it for 32 years and is really at the top of his came right now. I have seen him build in the shop and he is an artesian from another age in terms of the intensity and attention he puts into his builds and the standards he holds for his bows. His bows show and preform to these high standards.
I know I am bias, but I vote the Vixen, the Morning Star and/or the Northstar ( I have not shot the Misty Dawn).
I have shot other makes and models (Hill, Robertson, Toelke, etc) and I know there are other beauties out there for sure, but JD Berry's American style longbows are unquestionably world class. When I pick one of my bows up I can feel the history, the power and the craftsmanship in each bow and in every shot.

The one that you love and shoot.

Now Roy with that high classed stable of bows you have, you have the one? I am trying to get to just one. Shortly, there will be the main one for me. It is a good thing we don't treat our women like we do our bows. Then it would be, the one we like the most, but we sure do like messing around with the others. Or did I say that wrong. Its a good thing our bows are not like our women, or at least my wife. The main one would shoot you if you were messing around with the others.
-
I am really enjoying the Mohawk I have been shooting for a bit now....but also am partial to the Robertson Stykbow line of longbows.
That being said there are far more bows that are sweet shooters with great feel and looks that can be mentioned...as varied as the opinions we all hold.
Go to a large shoot....shoot as many as you can find on vendor racks or from people on the range...and the first one that tugs at your heart and makes you keep thinking of it long after the shot....BUY IT!!!!!
-
Pavan, For me it really isn't so much about how the bow shoots or feels, it's how the bow makes me feel... and shoot!
