Title: Shooting a Kodiak Hunter...
Post by: JoeArizona on December 03, 2012, 01:19:00 PM
A few days ago I was in a local shop and found a green Kodiak hunter, insert in front, I believe a raised silver coin, and blue stripe..S/N KT86879...60" 45#.  Seems like a reasonable price. It is in great shape...no stress lines at all.  Only a few rub marks.  The shop owner said he got it from the original owner who had shot about 150 arrows total and lost interest and stored it properly till now.
I shot it and I can't believe how great it shoots...I was amazed.  I want it.
My question is...how well will it stand up to a lot of shooting after all these years?  If I get it I will make it my main target and small game bow and it could get shot a lot.
Can a bow this old...but in great shape...handle say a few hundred arrow a week?
Thanks in advance for any replies.
Joe

Joe... unless you treat it poorly I would venture to say that bow will outlast you. Buy it and shoot the heck out of it!

My friend has been shooting his 1967 Kodiak Hunter(older than yours) since 1967!  He has owned no other recurve, and I cannot imagine how many arrows he's shot out of it. I refinished it for him back in the late 1990's due to finish wear at the grip.
The bow is as good as it ever was.

I shoot my 1965 kodiak daily and used it to take a little buck this year. They are great bows and I think you should hurry up and go buy it   :archer2:

I think it's been said that the Kodiak Hunter was one of the most bomb proof bows Bear ever built.  They are great shooters - buy it!!

Your bow is a mid 70's KH and Whip is right.  They are one of Bear's best built models and a best seller.

Get that thing, you won't regret it. If it's in that good of shape I'd shoot it with no worries at all. I have the same model and love it.

I've got one of the green Futurewood Kodiak Hunters as you describe.  It will be shooting generations after we are gone unless acted on by outside forces.  They are rugged.  They also have a very comfy grip - at least to my hand's liking.

I paid $60 for mine.  ;-)  That was a few years back.

2nd from top.

I have seen more Kodiak Hunters abused in hot days in johnboats out shooting carp than any other single bow.  They hold up well to that abuse.

I have a Kodiak Hunter I shoot a lot more than most folks shoot.  It's from the early 70s and is in great shape.  It'll be fine.  Shoot away.

Great bow!  However, If I was a Kodiak Hunter, I wouldnt want you to shoot me   :readit:    :help:

I have a 67 Hunter and it shoots well, the grip is just not my thing!

I have a '71 Kodiak Hunter that looks like it will go another 40 years easy.  I like the grip and how it shoots.  But, if it breaks tomorrow, it was a pleasure and a deal at $75.

My Kodiak Hunter is one of the most photogenic bows I own and it's super quiet.

Thanks for all the replies.
Unfortunately...it looks like the deal I was looking for on the Kodiak Hunter fell through.
After all the feedback on this thread about how great they are, I am more determined than ever to get a Kodiak Hunter in the near future.  Having shot one, I know I will like it.
Thanks again everyone for the replies.
Joe

Although, there is one thing better than having a Kodiak Hunter.  And that is having more than one...
