Title: 5" feathers?
Post by: refugerambler on December 02, 2012, 10:19:00 PM
I recently tried shooting some heritage 150's out of my 52# recurve, and they seem a little weak. Without changing arrow length (29.5"BOP) or point weight (200gr), would 5"feathers stiffen them up a little?

Thanks

What size are you shooting now?

Right now I'm shooting black GT expedition hunter 55/75's, with 250gr. up front. Tried the 150's because they seem to be a little tougher shaft.

What size feathers are you shooting? I used to shoot 150s out of my longbows. I believe they are tougher than GTs as well.
The bigger the feather the more drag, but you will be correcting spine issues by just the feather. It will work if spine is close enough but bareshaft tuning the arrows and using smaller feathers will be a better tune. If you already have the arrows and you are trying to make them work, try a 5" or high back 5 1/2".

They didn't show bad weak, just a little weaker than I like. I'm gonna try the 5"feathers and see if that does the trick. I'm also gonna try the 250's, they're just a little heavier than I want.

Thanks

You can try lowering your brace height, it will SLIGHTLY stiffen spine. If you change your fletching, add a wrap and if you check on-line you can find some wraps that are a bit heavier tha others.

The 5" feathers won't "stiffen" your shafts but they may correct faster and give you satisfactory results.

If you're truly a bit weak, the easiest solution by far is to slightly thicken your side plate, a little bit makes a BIG difference.  You can use a thicker side plate material, or put a toothpick or something similar under your current side plate.

Might try 4-5" plus the wrap.

I have used a reflective wrap effectively to slightly stiffen a set up.
