Title: Well I finally did it
Post by: Iowabowhunter on December 02, 2012, 05:01:00 PM
Ive been a hunter since the day I was born, helping dad pluck pheasants and quail, trailing grandpa while he blood trailed deer and "imitating" turkey calls to help bring longbeards in to dad and gpa's calls. My dad and grandpa were originally gun hunters, but got into bows about 7/8 years ago. My dad bought my first compound for me, and up until about about a year ago I had no interactions with trad bows. My wife's uncle is the one who introduced me to trad archery, and one day I was helping my grandma with Christmas decorations and happened to notice an old recurve leaning up against the wall. My grandpa said to go ahead and take it for my own. I got some arrows and a string made for it and shot quite a bit, but could never get the arrows to fly well. Unfortunately it broke about a month and a half ago or so. My wife's uncle loaned me a longbow if his, and while it shot the cedars fairly well, I couldn't get broadheads to fly well. Fast forward to a few days ago, and I see a Tall Tines for sale in the classifieds that is right in the poundage I was looking for, and at a heck of a price! I had a decision to make....keep the compound and keep looking for a 2nd job to save up $  for my own TT, or take the plunge and sell my comopound. I decided that since I had accomplished my goal of taking a P&Y caliber buck, it was time to re-focus my efforts on becoming a true trad bowhunter full time

I am not going to say that I wasnt extremely happy and proud of myself when I saw that buck (my first with archery tackle) fall for the last time....but I knew right after I saw him go down that I was missing something....I knew that I had the wrong bow in my hand. I had practiced hundreds of hours and was finally able to control my buck fever and after I was able to manage that making the shot wasn't very difficult. I am hoping to order a dozen or so arrows, and really want to start "the right way" as far as getting my arrows flying perfectly etc

Congrats on taking the big step.
Wait until you harvest your first deer with it, you will be pumped.

I am hoping to be able to hunt the late archery season here after gun season is over and the late season is open until roughly the 10-11th of January. For the first time this fall I hunted off the ground with my compound, and really enjoyed it and have been scouting good places for ground hunting. I have decided that I want to have the "best" performing setup that I possibly can. I decided that I am going to use the heaviest VPA 2 and 3 blade heads that I can get to fly well, depending on which particular animal I am after. I have most of the things needed to sharpen the heads, except for the KME broadhead sharpener which I plan on purchasing here before too long.

Looking into feathers, is my thinking correct that if I have high FOC, I can use smaller feathers? I really like the look of 4 fletch, would 4x4" suffice? I am a bowhunter first and foremost so I am looking for PERFECT broadhead flight, and hopefully decent flight trajectory.

I am extremely excited for it to get here, ordering arrows inserts and feathers now, along with a field point test kit! Can't wait to get out and shoot it, supposed to be in the 50's the rest of this week so that will be perfect!!!

Oh oh! Another one bites the dust. You, my friend, are now addicted, and there is no known cure.    :readit:

Congratulations!

I haven't had the opportunity to mess with a Tall Tines bow, but hear nothing but good about them.

As to your feather question, yes, 4x4 will work just fine whether you have high FOC or not. I went back to 3 feathers mainly because it saves me a feather per arrow and because I could not see that it made a difference to arrow flight. It is more of a personal choice than a practical one.

You have until the 19th to figure it out, probably longer if you have my luck with late season hunting. I'd recommend starting with Beman ICS Bowhunter shafts. They are cheap and consistent. I started with Carbon Express...too stiff, then went to Gold Tips...some stiff some not so much. I tried the Bemans because they were cheap and haven't seen any reason to switch. They are very consistent and seem to be right on in spine. I like to cut my arrows down to get the back of the broadhead against my index finger at full draw, so I shoot 500s cut to 28.5" BOP and adjust the point weight to get them paper tuned to my liking.

What is your setup? If you weren't about two hours south of me, I'd lend you a hand.

Yea feather's can get expensive I suppose, I will try 3 fletch first, hopefully that works. 4 fletch does look sweet though! I actually just ordered some Easton Axis 400's from 3rivers, got a heck of a deal on them! To go along with those are 100 grain brass inserts....now to try and figure out how to bareshaft tune in time for my bow to get here   :archer:    The bow is 54# @28 and I draw 28. rosewood/dymondwood riser with black glass limbs. I will most likely put a bear weather rest on her if I have trouble tuning off the shelf...o man am I excited, I found a tree that had fallen over sometime in the last couple of weeks, the whole root ball is lying on the ground, there's enough room there for me to stand up (I'm 6'2 and some change) and still be fully concealed! Now to find a nice comfortable chair, and test out that ASAT 3D suit on the ground!

I think 400s are going to be pretty stiff. I wouldn't cut them until I'd tried to tune first. I find paper tuning to be the quickest way to get results. I built a simple stand from 1" PVC pipe. One 10' piece, 2 elbows, 2 tees. The top square needs to be about 22". It will cost less than $10 at Menards...closer to $5 depending on if you need to add a base. Then I just duct tape a newspaper page to it, back up 3-4 yards and shoot through it into my bag target. The ideal is one round hole with three feather cuts. What you will probably see first is more of a slit with a hole at one end and another hole with three feather slits on the other end. Feather slits right = stiff. Feather slits left = weak. Obviously up or down would indicate nock high or low situation. I usually fix the nock height first, then work on spine. Quick and easy!

Here are a couple pictures of mine. I use the same base for my 3D deer. If you need a base, buy another 5' piece of pvc and two more elbows.

I didn't bother to glue the joints, so if I want to knock it down, it's easy. Took probably 10-15 minutes to build.

Here are some examples of what you will see. This is from the back side, so the one circled in blue is way weak (feather cuts to the left). The one in the red circle is what you want to see. The bottom fletch cut isn't showing...cell phone pics...but you can see the single hole with fletch cuts radiating out. When you see holes like this, you are tuned!

Just make sure you are drawing and anchoring exactly the way you shoot in the field or you can get a false reading. Once I get the bullet holes, I shoot some broadheads. Normally I will get excellent flight and hit where I am looking. If not, I double check my draw with the field points. It is easier if you have the arrows cut so the back of your broadhead touches your index finger. Then you know you are at full draw. I usually shoot some broadheads, then go back to the paper to confirm what I am seeing.

It's really easier to do than to explain, lol!

Have fun!

Um, I assumed you are a righty like me. If not, reverse everything and it will work.

That looks like a great idea! Unfortunately "the system" let me order those arrows from 3 rivers even though they are permanently sold out, looks like I have to get the money sent back to me and search some more for arrows.

I'm not knocking your arrow choice, but I have found the most consistent shafts for me to also be the cheapest: Beman ICS Bowhunter 500s. Big Jim has about the best prices on them right now, and he is a sponsor here. Depending on how close to center shot your bow is, you might want 500s. I'd probably want to test both 400 and 500 though. Take a look at the spine thread that is running right now. You will see that some carbons are not spined very consistently. Beman's tend to be much better than some of the ones that are very popular here. I had to drop some weight off the front for my RER even though the Orion is higher draw weight, just because of the difference in center shot.

I know you want to get right at it, but a test kit might not be a bad start. I don't have any 400s or any uncut 500s or I'd send you a couple arrows to try.

I looked into those Beman's, and they are just a bit lighter than I would like, and moreso if I start cutting them

Hey pybucks-u are going to love it! I haven't shot many trad bows but this Tall Tines is the best far and away! I might buy other bows in the future, but they will be made by Mr. Wessel
