Title: Dark Risers
Post by: Feather Flinger on November 25, 2012, 02:01:00 PM
Ok I'm looking to get a new 1 piece longbow made. I've been researching the best riser woods and have come down to a couple. I'm going to do a 2 wood riser and I already have a recurve with cocobolo and bocote in it. I know I like that combo but I'm going to go the opposite direction with this one. I'm thinking Pau Ferro and Ziricote. Does anyone have this combination or something similar that would like to show some pics? Thanks, Jeff

Anybody else have some bows with dark risers? I'd really like to see some more. I'm going with a pau ferro/wenge riser and myrtle limbs.

Micarta/Bocote really like the extra weight the Micarta offers. In a one piece that would be a no brainer for me to add for stability.

A Morrison ILF in black phenolic, cocobolo, and some kind of ebony I think. I just realized I deleted any decent pictures of this riser with limbs I sold and don't own anymore. Sorry for lousy photos. It's a nice looking riser though.

What are some dark woods grown in North America? I see a lot of exotic hard woods, but I'd really like to get a bow that was both made and 'grown' in North America. The problem is most of the native woods I've seen are light in colour.

Mr. Rowan, you sir have a very fine taste for woods in bows. I love them all. I think I once had a Blacktail you owned at one time. Great bows!

Yes, 60" 60#@28" I believe. Gaboon Ebony/Cocobolo. It was used for hunting before I got it, still beautiful bow even with some field marks. I didn't get it from you, don't remember the fella's name. I saw Norm Johnson in Portland last March at the PBS banquet, listened to him speak about hunting elk there. Awesome guy and highly thought of from many people in the community. Shooting Wallace bows but would have liked to have kept that one.
