Title: Broadhead Flight
Post by: kill shot on November 23, 2012, 11:29:00 AM
What makes a broadhead (hunting tip) fly true? Is it the type of tip or arrow set up? I tried varius types of tips and found some to plane out on there way to the target. The set up I use works very well but I don't know why. I use magnus stingers, set on 45 Deg. 2219 xx75 arrows,5.5" fletch left wing. But some of the other tips did not work with the same set up. Whats your opinion. Oh, I shoot right handed.

The answer may not be at all simple...

First: Your broadhead needs to "spin-true" just like a top. Try that on a smooth and hard surface like a counter top. If it wobbles, put that head on another shaft.

Second: Are your inserts in straight? This can cause wobble also.

Third: All broadheads effect the Dynamic Spine of an arrow in their own way. This will cause a broadhead to plane away from a target.

* I know there can be more on this... Let's let someone else shine in now.

Do you tune your arrows?

What you do to stabalize the head have to overcome what is trying to alter the fight.

I set mine horizontal when nocked so the paradox of leaving the bow doesn't set up unequal pressure against the flats of the blade as it wobbles.  The rest is the drag of the fletching at the tail and eventually the spiralling as the fletching catches air.

Mine are 45 deg. with the blade lined up with the upper hen feather. And yes I tune my shafts. The zwicky and the magnus stinger fly great. I tried a sniper set up the same way with poor results. 3 blade snuffer, I couldn't brag about them.
