2012 has truly been an incredible season filled with dreams & blessings from above... After 20 years of employment with one Engineering Firm, and much prayer over the years regarding what God desired of me, He opened a door so wide that even I couldn't miss it!!! A new job was in order that reduced my travel and brought me into an environment that was thriving with enthusiasm, joy, and a drive to live life to the fullest @work AND @home... So, I began the year with a new job and a renewed spirit to LIVE! My wife and I immediately engaged in a "Better Health / Biggest Loser" contest at work and we took Second Place! I'll spare you all the details as I transition into the "Traditional Bowhunting" aspect of all this that is our united passion on this Forum... Exercise, eating right, 1st 10K run, 1st 5K trail run, 1st Sprint Triathlon all have led to me dropping 50lbs since the beginning of the year & "maintaining"... :) This new foundation has revitalized the "pursuit" :campfire: :coffee:

The year began with anticipation & preparation for a long planned Fall Black Widow Maine Bear Hunt @Squapan Mountain Outfitters with my 14 year old boy Jeremiah. Plans were to take my trusty 1987 Black Widow HS60 52lb @28" takedown. Now she's a sweety, Blonde Maple Limbs backed with Diamondback Rattle Snake Skins, black & white phenolic tips, all black aluminum riser, and sealskin rest for shooting off the shelf... She and I go way back and it's the only traditional bow I've ever owned. Let's just say she & I were quite comfortable with one another :saywhat:

Well, even though she & I were pretty much attached at the hip, I'd always had the dream of ordering my very own special WOOD Black Widow of newer vintage that could up the performance a bit... With my 5'10", short arm stature, and larger chest I'd always struggled with the 60" bow out of the treestand @close range! At about 15 yards and under the string & lower limb would interfere with my leg and I'd have to do gyrations up in the stand to get the shot off :knothead: :bigsmyl: Well, with the big Bear Hunt planned and the expense it was taking to drive there I really put it on the back burner and focused on the hunt! I wanted harmony at home & contentment is a good thing!

Practice & preparation were going well for the upcoming Bear Hunt! Do you remember me mentioning the "Better Health / Biggest" loser competition @work? 2nd Place? Well, we won $600!!! :pray: , God gave me the green light & it was confirmed through a very understanding Blessing of a wife. My good friend Ben "23FeetUpandHappy" was also instrumental in this blessing... It was settled, with only 7-8 weeks before my bear hunt I placed my dream order!!! :goldtooth: The Black Widow folks assured me they'd do everything they could to get me the bow in time for the hunt...

With only a short time to build a relationship with my new dream bow, I had to work up some "special medicine"... Arrows! I was interested in a heavy weight, high FOC, skinny carbon solution. I was very fortunate to have a gracious friend (Andy) who offered up some 340 & 400 Beman Classics that were too short for him. What a blessing to minimize expense! Thanks Andy!!!
My 340 Solution was 29" Standard Hidden Inserts w/either 260Grain Abowyer Single Bevel 2-Blade Brown Bears OR 250Grain VPA Terminator 1-1/4" 3-Blade w/2 5grain brass washers, footed with aluminum sleeves...
My 400 Solution was 29" 50Grain brass Inserts with 175Grain VPA Terminator 3-Bladers, footed with aluminum sleeves...
Once assembled it was practice, practice, practice...

That brings us to the end of August with Dream Bow in hand, and a Dream Hunt with my boy Jeremiah finally apon us! :saywhat:
With much prayer :pray: and anticipation, we hit the road for a very long trip to Chapman Maine from Cedar Rapids Iowa. I cherished each mile and minute with my boy!!! :goldtooth:

Jeremiah and I had a great time with the Black Widow Folks, Squapan Mountain Outfitter Folks, and new friends from the Widow Wall!!! It was truly a Dream Hunt and we enjoyed ourselves while making some incredible memories together as Father & Son... Although I did not see a bear in my stands Jeremiah & I had an incredible opening night together in his. We praise God for it ALL!
We decided to drive straight through on the way home. This was a welcome sight for road/travel weary men... :-)

So, with a "Dream Bow" that's just itching to let loose!!! I started to intensify the scouting & season plans... An annual management hunt schedule was falling in to place, a small urban county place was looking good, and expectations were high for my traditional buck hunting oasis! Exercise & focus on fitness had me tuned and ready to give it all I got this season with the energy of a machine.... :thumbsup: The fire was lit, Iowa Whitetails beware :archer2:

I decided I'd stop off at one of our local archery shops for a few items and the manager there knows where I hunt and on occasion hunts the same property I do... I walk in the door and he says "Hey, your ears been burning...?" Nope, I say. He proceeds to lay down a loose connection of communication dots that leads to some mental churn about my traditional buck hunting oasis. :confused: :( I choose not to engage at this point, and planned to immediately go visit the landowner for a one-on-one... :knothead: I'm kind of like 3rd in line out there and I believe some pressure has been applied that somehow the other's lack of success is a result of my success on the far perimeter of the property... The others have always picked there spots and I stay clear in more remote areas so I don't buy it, but it's not my call. No privileges for this season, subject to change in the future... In grace & humility I thanked the landowner for everything extended to me past & future along with the assurance that I understand it's a blessing/privilege to have permission not a right! Our relationship was more important than the deer... I kept my head up high, but left a little dejected... Time to let my buddy Ben know...

Ahhh yesss - "Reasons" for everything...
Masterful & Purposeful describe my God in addition to so many wonderful attributes. You see despite being a Fully Devoted Follower of Christ, I've Indeed faced many trials in this life and I'm no stranger to pain or "the rain" if you like country music...ha I could tell of mighty struggles and loss, but I choose to shine a light on how God allows me to "LIVE" and be forged by fire, sharpened for the challenges ahead... Ben and I both hunt together during a specific time-slot & zone at the Public County Park management hunt... So we scouted and hung our stands with great anticipation. I was at the bottom of a hardwood ravine that had two intersecting ridges that met up with a thicket... Trails coming off of each ridge both running North & South, and bisecting with the thicket edge trail running East and West! Ultimately heading North to feed... Looking good I should say, the perfect place to put the "Dream Bow" to the test! :saywhat: :archer:

The day is October 12th, and this will be an afternoon hunt... The stage is set, so I put on my new Asbell Wool Pull-Over in Evening Stand Green with an Evening Stand Brown Vest/No hood on over that.... I say new, but really these are just new sizes, I'm down to Medium where as my previous Asbell garb was EXTRA LARGE, not very stealthy... :thumbsup: I then put on my "thrifty" Gander Mountain Wool Camo pants that I got on like triple clearance around Father's day... $17, another gift pre-ordained by God as these had a waist of 32", only now that's room to layer... SWEET!
I'm in my Lone Wolf Apha Hang-On in a sweet forked Sniper tree with 270 degree shooting! I just know something good is gonna happen!
With plenty of light still left, here comes a doe, and she's read the script... I think :pray:

She sneaks her way from South to North and eventually she's gonna get downwind if I don't get a little creative :scared: :scared: This 54" KB was designed & hand-picked for just such an occasion. She's nimble I tell ya... So I prepare to take her before she hits the scent stream.
She steps out @17yards and there's an overhanging limb in the way... Wide open in front of her a few steps, but that's where the scent stream is going :notworthy: My friend Ben was there for the recovery & so was another friend who helped out... Due to circumstances & weather that rolled in, I was not able to take any hero pics with my Asbell Garb, Bow, and thrifty Wool Pants, but I'm excited to share this pic none the less.....

The day is October 21st, it's a morning hunt at the County / Park Management hunt... A different stand down on an oak flat where there's sign of activity at an outside perpendicular fence corner with a pretty nice white oak :thumbsup: Thicket near by, sweet bench apron that leads to me and it's a beautiful corridor to place the Lone Wolf... A funny side note is when I hung this stand, I did so after work and actually hung two stands and needed to be back for my daughter's birthday evening so I had to move quick. In my previous fitness level this would not have happened. I got it done and actually ran past Ben like a freight train as I was heading out of the woods. He must have thought a sweet buck was headed his way! Back to the hunt. This was just one of those days when bucks were on their feet and cruising around. But this is a management hunt and I have no special buck permit... That's okay with me, my cup is full and I'm living the pursuit...
Okay, I notice movement and here comes some nervous whitetails and they are gonna pass me by if I don't get ready. I decide that I'm gonna take one even though it's small... The meat will be tender, there's no buck management strategy here, and I've got a 50/50 chance of it being a doe which would earn me some lottery tickets for a special buck tag next year. So, I'm on full alert and ready to make it happen! The deer cruises through and slows but is nervous. At 22 yards my shot is on it's way with a 400 Beman Classic, 50Grain Brass Insert and a 175Grain VPA Terminator 3-Blader... Praise God, the shot is in the "pocket" and the deer goes down in 10 yards... Oh my... Another wonderful blessing of a harvest :notworthy:

Well my season is over at the County / Park Management hunt so I'm on to my Urban County property.... The day is October 28th and it's an evening hunt! The stage is set and all is well... As dusk approaches, a beautiful doe makes her way towards me and ultimately she presents another God given opportunity to fulfill dreams with my "Dream Bow"...
At 18-20 yards the Beman Classic 400, w/50Grain Brass Insert, and 175Grain VPA Terminator 3-Blader is on the way! Perfect, tight to the shoulders, and right through the pocket! She is down in seconds and I can see her from the stand...
Can you pick her out? I sent this photo to Ben on my smart phone... This pic is all I will share as it was dark and my self photos do not reflect the beauty of such a wonderful gift! She deserves the best I've got...

We advance to November 10th!!!! This is the RUT here in Iowa!!!!!!! I was all set to go buck hunting, when the Lord dropped in my lap the opportunity to take my boy to the Iowa / Purdue Football Game! My brother has sweet Club Seats and he offered them to Jeremiah and I!!!! Thank you Shane... We were stoked so hunting would have to wait.. Out of respect for the forum I will abstain from posting the photos, but just know it was time well spent with my boy! Praise God for more important things than bowhunting... Jeremiah is a Blessing that comes from the Lord! God Is Good ALL The Time! Iowa lost at the buzzer but it was awesome.
Well I got back home in time to receive the Blessing from my wife and kids to go for it at the Urban County spot! I had to go in game day attire and just put my wool on over top. Man, I'm feeling nimble... I decide the wind is wrong for my stand so I need to mix it up with a ground blind! Enter, the Double Bull :D My old bow did not work so well with the Double Bull, but the new "Dream Bow" should do the trick! Woohoo... It's really slow, but at the buzzer here comes a beautiful doe moving right to left at about 17-18yards and she's a sweety :eek: I don't feel comfortable stopping her and drawing attention to this new blind so I focus on the spot and let it rip... 340 Beman Classic, Standard Insert, 260 Grain Abowyer Brown Bear on it's way... Not perfect, a little low and back, but by her reaction it's lethal. Likely liver... :notworthy:

Well, even if it stopped there this would have been truly a "Dream Season" with a "Dream Bow" for sure!!!! I'm so thankful for it all... But that's not the end of it. Advance to November 15th, for my last Urban County Antlerless permit (I got 3 this year). The evening hunt found me in the Double Bull again, but I'm nocked with the 400 Beman Classic, 50Grain Brass Insert, and 175 Grain VPA Terminator 3-Blader!!!! Once again near the buzzer a huge doe steps out and is moving from left to right. I can't even remember the exact distance but it's not a good place for her to be, this I know ;) :saywhat:
Once again, I focus like a laser beam right behind her shoulder, find anchor, and loose the string... She takes the charge and it looks good :thumbsup: She tries to burn it off, but is sagging at 10 yards, and down in 20! :notworthy:

Before I go any further, I want you all to know that I share each and everyone of these harvests to give Praise & Thanks to God for what He has done for me this season. It's been a season full of fulfilled dreams, while yet maintaining harmony @home and I share them in humility. I am nothing special, deserve no focus of attention at all, nor do I crave the Lime Light... Please know that in all honesty. I am overwhelmed at what God did in & through me, and my relationships around me. Ben & I are close and strive to pray for one another, and hold each other's arms up in Faith when it seems tough to do in our own personal lives. In our weakness God is magnified and that's just the way I like it! I surrender.... Ben, thank you for sharing this season with me and I was glad to be there for you!!!! Well done my friend!

As you can probably imagine, I didn't wait until November 17th to go buck hunting, sheesh :rolleyes: ;)
I started to get more serious about the buck hunting the last week of October on... Despite hunting on Public Land, I still had high hopes of tagging a mature Iowa Buck and had every intention of holding out for that special opportunity the spurs me in to "Go-Time"... A man's got to dream, right? Generally speaking, I was seeing okay Buck movement at my Urban County spot & on my Public Land Wilderness Hunts as well when I could travel... However most of the activity was smaller bucks, any where from 80-115" or so but just not what I was looking for yet. And I did have a couple of bucks that were larger, say 120-135" cruise by just out of range at the Urban County Spot, but my heart was in tagging a Public Land Wilderness Buck. My rut hunting was broken up right around November 6th-8th due to a business trip in Philadelphia and I was sure longing to be in a treestand. But balance in life is a good thing! And as I've already shared, my cup was overflowing! So, I'd be in the stand and texting my wife about this or that being slow OR a buck came by that just wasn't what I hoped for or dreamed about and she for awhile would say, I hope you get the one you want... I'd say thanks!
Now's a good time to acknowledge my wife as a wonderful gift from God that I cherish. She is a wonderful Godly woman that so desires the best for me and she was an encouragement to me this entire dream season. More often than not she ENCOURAGED me to go hunting and thanked me for my hardwork while home and at work! I praise God for her! Thank you my dear... :saywhat: , I know that it is possible so for now I'm going to let the moment dictate when & if I shoot!" She said, "okay, I know dear I sure hope you get the one you're looking for!!!!!" Watery eyes.... Wow, what a woman! Thank you Lord! :notworthy:

I've always kind of had those words in my mouth about being blessed to see the Otherside Of The Rainbow, meaning the Lord has blessed me with great gifts, treasures of joy, peace, and understanding. This includes some very nice whitetails that I'm so thankful for! Because it's on my heart, it helps me remember His blessings and it wards off the woe is me, and getting too down in the dumps when things in this life are not happening according to my timeline or will... Ultimately I'm better off if I just surrender it all to God...
I had some great encounters with the Public Land Wilderness Bucks but again each escaped with a pass in hopes of realizing dreams that were far more than "settling"... Well for Ben & I things were getting serious and I was feeling the ever looming "cliff" of the lockdown phase! Something I dread. With my small properties (No Food!) and public land, things can go from active to the desert overnight! :help: We both also knew that it was time to start shutting it down as this pursuit can take a toll on family even if they are all troopers! We love them too much to see them alone while we chase dreams! They need us! That brings us up to the last Hoorah weekend! Ben & I were of like mind that the weekend of November 17th & 18th is time to get it done or shut it down. The season for me was a "Dream Season" already, not quite so for Ben... :pray:

I begin the trek to Public Land - Wilderness Hunt for the last Hoorah! I'm up, I'm stoked, I'm all in! All three of those songs I mentioned earlier are going through my head! I'm flying with a Heart of Worship! Time to see if Ben is up and on His way to the area as well. I'm packing our personal sweet smelling hocks from the November 15th doe. Well I finally make contact and he's behind a little so I'll not see him at the bunkhouse before the hunt... I needed to keep moving because this was definitely a "Hang & Hunt" situation in a spot that was narrowing down to be a magical triangle for sure..... South East Wind and I'm gonna be on the Northwest side of a bedding thicket in a Pine Tree that I'd have to select in the dark! The Lone Wolf Alpha & 3 Climbing sticks should be the ticket... So I'm loaded to the gills with a turkey vest full of accessories and my "Dream Bow" headed to find the Otherside Of The Rainbow! No matter really, the Owner/Creator/and Sovereign God who holds everything in His hands, including the Otherside Of The Rainbow lives in my heart... I've surrendered, that I might truly LIVE. God is good ALL the time! Even if this dream of a deer never comes to fruition...
So, I strap on the drag rag which has a little premium doe estrus AND my magical November 15th sweet smelling doe hock skewered on it and make the trek in the pre-dawn darkness. The anticipation is great! I walk in the trail that skirts the downwind side of the bedding and amble a little as I get to my stand site... After some hem & haw about the "Perfect Tree", I stop the paralysis and get set-up! Now I'm ready with a few new mock scrapes and scent bombs, One primary that has my doe hock hanging over it!
The sun comes up, it's a new day dawning
It's time to sing Your song again

I am packed for all day, my wife has me set-up with zip locks full of food, salami, cheese, crackers, protein bars, chicken & rice in the thermos!!! I am here til dark, you can bet on that! Whoops, no water... gulp... My setup is perfect and I'm confident a cruiser will come by eventually, as long as we're not in "LOCKDOWN", uggh don't say that ugly word... I've got the Asbell wool on and my thrifty Gander Mountain Wool Camo Pants, this is gonna be good... Of course at this point my mind is contemplating "settling" with great joy a smaller buck than "Rainbow" status... No need to worry, on this day, there would be no question who was in control of choosing the gift! God himself would rule the day! :notworthy:

Nice buck KAZ.
Boys and girls, I have shot a bow side by side with KAZ. That is not something you want to do if you have any concerns with someone drilling every shot on the target while you spray arrows like you're using a shotgun.
As soon as a critter walks in fron of him, I have no doubt how that story is gonna end.

Don't mind at all... I shoot "instinctive", fairly high wrist, high anchor but I do not gap or split vision shoot. I focus really intently on what I want to hit and stay firm with the push pull to generate back tension. The way I see it, with a high anchor and keeping shoulders high and free with a bow hand pushing firm at the target, the arrow has to go where I look! My eye is only a little above the arrow but I never used the point or gun barreled. I know folks say no way but I can shoot pretty good in really low light or even the dark... My HS60 has a clicker on it, but I shoot the same just with a longer time at full draw while I'm squeezing & focusing to click! Hope this helps...?

Great buck!!! Congrats!! I shoot the same way you do. After getting this method down and using a longer time at anchor all I have to worry about is good back tension. My shots spray if I collaps at the shot.

Travis and I where 24 hours away from doubling up on our best bucks to date............
But we use the same taxidermist and we met up on Mon. night to pick up our racks and start the proccess of looking at diff. forms and how we are going to display our dream bucks :thumbsup:

For those who are interested, the shot was @17-18yards and he was walking & quartering away from right to left. I tried to stop him in my first window with a "mrrp" but nothin doin, he was googly eyed and on a mission... I prepared in advance as he was going behind a screen of small trees then took him on the slow quartering away walk in my last window without trying to stop him again. The shot was absolutely perfect and really hit hard on the exit side. I got full penetration down to the wrap but the fletches never made it through him. He broke the arrow and I only found the back end about 15-20 yards from impact. He sprinted off and stopped at 50 yards, then tipped over in just a few seconds!
For this hunt of course I used my "Dream Bow" which is 53lbs @28, I draw closer to 27.5" along with:
29" 340 Beman Classics with (3)-5" Right Wing Helical Fletches & Black Widow Wraps & footed w/aluminum sleeves
Standard Hidden Inserts, Abowyer 145Grain Right Wing Single Bevel 1-1/4" 2Blade Glue On BoneHeads w/125 grain screw-in adapters
Here's some pics, the arrow entered in the left side and exited out extremely tough lower scapula bone a fuzz from the "T-part of the shoulder bone so "HEAVY". Blood trail was weak, but penetration was impressive.

Indeed, this buck was beautiful and in his prime! I look forward to a wonderful mount that draws attention to the majesty of our Creator & reminds me daily of the Great & Mighty God I serve!!! In His infinite wisdom, grace, & mercy He chose to bless me, yet I know full well in reverence that I do not deserve it... This is indeed a gift. May I worship the CREATOR, and not creation for He is worthy of all praise! And may I always value people above the animals & nature for we are His special creation created in His image....
In regards to better physical condition, you are right, though it pales in comparison to good spiritual health, it is empowering...

To bring you all up-to-speed, 2013 was a wonderful year that brought plenty of action in the form of does & young bucks... However, mature bucks were non-existent for me. I feel blessed to fill (3)antlerless permits with the Black Widow KB Dream Bow. Praise God for it all!
Now, on to "Rainbow's Homecoming!" Though it took awhile, I'm very pleased with the outcome. I wanted to do something special to always remember how God has blessed me far beyond what I deserve, and this special "season" in my life... :notworthy: I have a few other shoulder mounts so to set this one apart, I chose a Wall Pedestal! :goldtooth: I recently moved into a "new to me" home and Rainbow isn't in his final display form, but I figured it was time to share. Tic-toc you know...

Thanks everyone, I think it even looks better in person! I was hoping to have it hung up in it's finished place on the wall but I'm too indecisive... My pics are just from my phone and lighting wasn't ideal. For now he's safely hung up in the unfinished basement til I figure it out. The back of the mount is finished really nice and the stand-off pivot mount allows me to rotate & swivel for the best viewing angle wherever I put him...
I'm looking forward to what 2014 brings. I was blessed with Page 1 of another "Epic Adventure" for this year. A wonderful mature doe the other day with my Black Widow KB dream bow. :campfire: Thanks again
