Title: Bow string broke at full draw
Post by: Jack Ripper on November 22, 2012, 10:26:00 PM
Like the title says, scared the crap out of me.   :scared:  But I was lucky it did not damage my vintage Super Grizz. I'm glad I ordered all the stuff to make my own strings earlier this week because my spare is on the bow now. I had alot of shots on that string and I was thinking to myself before it happened maybe I should change my string. Just goes to show you should almost always listen to that little voice.

Glad it turned out that the bow or yourself was not damaged. Were there any signs of wear on the string or just that little voice ? Good that you and your bow are safe.

There was  little wear on the string but prob 5000 arrows were shot with it. I have been shooting alot the last 3 months. I get so caught up in shooting sometimes I'm still flinging arrows in the dark. It broke right in the center of the top loop.

I hear you on the "scary" part. I've had one string break and it was on one with training wheels.  It was a late 80's vintage PSE when they used the short string that hooked to a cable on each end.  The cable snapped at full draw and laid my bow arm wide open like a knife had hit it. Fortunately it was shallow enough not to cut any major tendons or veins but ever since then I really watch strings.

I've had a couple strings break while shooting. Every one except one has broke in one of the loops. One time I had an issue with a burr in the string groove on the bow and broke 3 strings in 3 weeks. The bowyer fixed that problem for me and I have not broken one on that bow since. It always scares the you know what out of me. I shoot my strings probably way to long. I do not like changing things (not even a string) once I get them right so I shoot and shoot and shoot (thousands of shots for sure) and usually don't change until I start to notice something bad.

BTW, glad you and your bow are OK!

Glad you are okay.  I destroyed a beloved longbow with a string break at full draw.  The limbs were damaged.  Bummer!

I've never had a string "break", but on a brand new bow, first time out with it, the loop slipped/unraveled(?) and the loop became so large that the string popped off the tip at the limb recoil/bounce. The hand shock was VERY noticeable, the arrow never made it to the target, but the limbs were undamaged. Pants needed changing though!
