Will be there end of this months and stay until mid Sept. Do I need some heavy bibs or parkas? I have light gear and was just going to layer up. Im not using any cotton. I was just wondering if I need to have something heavy, just in case.
Thanks,Gilbert
YOU SHOULD BE FINE
Hi Gilbert,
Asking what the weather will be like in Alaska is like asking what the weather will be like in the L48 states. The north slope lays on top of Minneapolis and the southern tip of the panhandle is on top of Miami. Lots of variation there, not even taking into account the elevation. Where in Alaska will you be?
Where you'll be makes a lot of difference. Two things you can depend on anywhere are BUGS and RAIN. Cold should not be a problem. I've suffered bugs in late August so intense I couldn't get out of the tent for days at a time, except when it was pouring rain. Some places worse, some better: skeeters, no-see-ums, and worst of all white-sox, which are tiny black flies with white feet that will bite through most clothing and burn and itch for two weeks. Rain and bugs. Bugs and rain.
Listen to John H. - Yep it can be anywhere from 10 degrees to 80 above in just the area that I live & hunt in September. Heck its 83 today as I type this but it already has been below freezing last week and early moose starts friday of next week! So best to layer. And you being from Texas you might feel the cold if it dips down much. In my area it might be 15 degree in the early morning but above 60 degrees in the afternoon in September and I dress accordingly. Oh and it might snow too! A few years back we had snow the 8th of sept and it did not disappear until the end of April.
John H. - You coming up again this year??
