Ok,, I don't have a single shotgun in my house nor do I like borrowing others WMD's,, So I was thinking of duck hunting with my bow,,FLU,FLu's for sure,,String tracker to find'em if I miss or hit one.
Only thing is? Do I use a BH or a judo?,,I think if it were geese I'd use a BH but with ducks,, I don't know,, I got great places with close flying shots and plenty of cover to hide in,,the setup is really perfect to try,,What do ya think,,and yes some will say go buy a gun,,but I'm not after shooting every duck that comes by,,just into the hunting for the ducks and the sweet shots that could arise from it,,
-
Do a search on Frank AK, he did some good threads on it.

Jason, me and some buddies are going to do some goose hunting this fall. I am going to take my bow and they are going to back me up with shotguns. I am going to take flu flus tipped with broadheads. I am looking forward to trying it. I would try ducks but I think they fly to fast. It would be fun to try and still hunt along a river for them.
-
man sounds like a great time,,Got room for one more bow hunters,,Its not Like were gana hit anything,,LOL,, :bigsmyl:
-
Tred Barta knnocked down a greenhead after about 36 shots on his show. It also "happened" to be banded. I also watched Fred Eichler shoot pheasants with his bow. Knock yourself out but I would look into the regs. so you don't get hit with the big ticket!
-
I was thinkin the same thing stick,, ;)
-
DO it legally and to the best of your ability.
Frank AK has had good success.
-
I tried it this past season on an impoundment and well it was costly, shots taken 14 , ducks hit 0, arrows lost 4.. laughs by fellow duck hunters priceless at least I tried...
-
I'm looking forward to it myself this winter hunting geese with Flu-Flu's I've got a huge hayfield they fly over right in my back pasture...i haven't a clue whether I'll hit anything....but it sure will be fun flinging arrow in the air trying.....no ringing in your ears either....Go for it Bro!!!! It should be a hoot!!!

I have waterefowl over the years woth a gun but this year I am taking my recurve. If your decoy setup is right and you are a good caller you might get a "Skillet" shot. That is where the bird lands in front of you and it is guarented to make it to the frying skillet.
-
Ducks have a nice thick layer of feathers and are fast, flu flus slow down inside thirty yards. Forget judos unless you're really able to do head shots on a flying duck.
I would think even with a BH you would struggle to bring one down with a standard flu flu. flu flus with 6x4" straight, half width feathers may do it, they are a little faster, plus heavy arrows and small diameter BHs. My friends shoot them that way over here but you still need to get them close. With a slow arrow the bird 'rolls' with the hit but a fast arrow hits like it was standing still.Of course in marshland you may never see the missed arrows again but that's another story.

shoot straight

Thats why I was going to use my string tracker,,I might have a better time looking for those arrows,,LOL,, I'm going to look into regs,,Frank AK has had success hunting for them..If you do a search he has a few threads on it,,J

My buddy shot a Goose with a arrow and watched it fly away into the sunset arrow in it.
I have hunted water fowl for at least 20yrs and I will stick to a shot gun, they are tough. I do understand your thinking and you will have a blast.
Now pheasants I would love to hunt, I am going to make a ariel launcher to practice with first.
Too many projects not enough time.

Use broadheads with a scorpion behind them to prevent a pass thru and make it harder for them to fly with an arra in them....
-
I'd use broadheads - a bird in the air is going to "give" a bit when you hit it w/ a blunt. I forget where I saw it, but I gather some American Indians used to hunt them w/ bows on the water.
They used longish arrows with some sort of a bulge affixed behind the broadhead. Feel free to laugh at my ASCII art but it looked something like this...
>>>---------------*-->
Hehe. The idea was to fire the thing parallel to the surface of the water and blast the duck amidships. If the arrow dipped a bit, then the bulge was supposed to make the arrow skip on the surface and still have a chance at hitting the duck.
No clue how well they work or whether you could legally shoot ducks w/ them though.

Here's my biggest waterfowl to date, Tundra Swan, NC 1997 with my swan hunting pals, Cory Mattson and G.Monty Browning. Shot wooden arrows with Woodsmans and Snuffers. This hunt was the closet thing I witnessed to Agincourt! :D

I say go for it ! I think if you wait until there just about ready to land they would be a pretty sationary target.
Let us know how you do.

Try to get hold of the video/dvd "Spirit of the Bow" by Barry & Gene Wensel. There is a segment on duck hunting that will be most rewarding. :D

Thanks Fellas,,Nice pic Joe
Right now it looks like I've hooked up with Tim and we'll be doing a late season hunt in the cut cornfeilds,,we'll have to see..Gotta check the regs quick,,
-
OK,,bows and arrows are leagal in Michigan, but I can'r find any where in the book where it describes shooting by air or ground/water top,,will let ya know what I find,
-
Yeah use something to impede penetration, just so you dont get too mamny flyers. I am going to tryit this year my self. I am hunting anything (legal) with my recurve this year.

I took a gadwall hen last season with a home made cane arrow and a .38 blunt. Of course it was a skillet shot (on the water) ;) We did some aerial shooting but it was tough shooting because of how we were forced to hunt last year. East texas was a desert last year. No shortage of water this year though. Pick your shots and arrow loss will be minimal. Ive lost none thus far. Calling and decoying skills will be vital to your success on aerial shots. You want that in your face back pedaling shot. Man im excited. We will roll film...

We jump shoot ducks out of irrigation ditches and a river where we can get really close shots. We've use flu-flu shafts (4-fletch unburned 4" feathers) with snaros or broadheads in the past, but this last year we used that "Gobbler Guillotine" head which actually worked great. Our Chesapeake bay dogs love it because most birds went down wing-tipped crips for them to chase. Without good retrivers, no tschnique I've tried would be workable, you would lose way too many crips.

There you go, 'heavy' wooden arrows and snuffers/woodsmans - a proper arrow for a tough bird! Off ye go then, me lad!

Wish you could shoot swan in Pungo! November hunt they come out of the lake at treetop over yer head while you are on the stand!

I have hunted waterfowl since I was old enough to shoot a shotgun. It is by far my favorite type of hunting and as much as I like hunting with a bow and arrow I think you are doing a disservice to waterfowl to do it with archery tackle. Ducks are a rapidly dwindleing resource that we cant afford to squander. The crippling losses will be horrendous. I dont think there is any way to consistently kill waterfowl on the wing with a bow. Stalking and shooting on the water may be feasable but I would restrict the wingshooting to pen raised gamebirds or crows maybe. I think we need to be careful not to let our enthusiasm for archery cloud reality and common sense. If you insist I think having a shotgunner for backup would be the only responsible course of action.
-
I have hunted waterfowl basically my whole life. I handmake my own calls,I am currently running my own lab in senior AKC hunt tests that I'm training myself,i even make my own cork decoys plus I competed nationally in duck calling contests. i have never met anyone more intangled in this sport of waterfowling than myself. I can't think of nothing much more challenging than standing in flooded timber trying to connect an arrow with a greenhead on a foggy morning. One will cripple 50 fold more ducks each season with steel shot than arrow.
-
need some more company tim and jason I think I could plan for that if the timing is right.
rob
also I dont think you can shoot at a duck unless it is in flight in michigan I will talk to a dnr rep about that if I can

Hello All,
I have hunted canada geese with the bow and it is fun. They are tough birds, I used MA-3 broadheads with flu-flus at decoying birds 20 yds and less, they worked very well. I think any quality broadhead would work. We also shot in teams each team consisted of an archer and a shotgunner. The shotgunner played clean-up on birds not hit well. The archers would have shot priority on incoming birds. This system worked well and resulted in the harvesting of birds that would have been lost, communication between team members is a must.
I do not recommend dogs in this situation, nor do I recommend chasing wounded birds that can run, use the gunners.

Yes please do,,I looked the book over from front to back several times and didn't see any specifics on where there legal to shoot except the normal like deer hunting,
I can't make the call bud but would love to have ya,,PM Tim and see if you can go,,these are his buddies and they are backing us up with shot guns,,Sounded like late season as well,,Should be a good time,,J

I say the more trad bows the marrier!! The more arrows we can get in the air the better our chances!! My buddy and I were just talking about it tonight. I think we have a few corn fields picked out for scouting. We have permission on a few and some we would have to ask. It will probably be late season when the corn is down. These plans are still preliminary but I think if we get a good showing of trad bows it would make for a great day in the field!!
-
Man did anyone watch Tred barta nail that goose out of the air tonight,,He nailed it and it was down for the count right there on the spot,,kinda funny it was on tonight when I've been throwing around the idea for a long time now,,His words in the end,,Never give up,,  but I don't think he'll see it ;) JB

You want to be careful about dogs and birds with broadheads in them. also, most farmers hate to have broadheads lost in their fields, especially if they lead to flat tractor tires. Good luck and have fun if you can make it happen.
-
I agree whitebuff...quite an episode of Barta...
-
in Alabama the law reads that you can use a bow to hunt waterfowl. nothin more in the book about wether in the air or not. crap! i cant hit em with a 12 gauge, i sure as he!! cant hit em with a bow... :D
