I am kinda rough on my bows when out in the woods and got some scratches on her. I called JD to ask what to use to smooth them out and he said....Oh heck Lance just send it to me and ill fix it right up for you....and he wont even let me pay him for it!
I also asked him about reshaping the grip a little bit and he said that that wasnt a problem at all....also without a charge!
Now that is someone who really cares about keeping you happy with his work! Got to admire that kind of service!!!
Here is the post from when i first got my bow.... http://tradgang.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=1;t=115317;p=1
Has anyone shot this one and also one of his Apollo? I am thinking about ordering one because it looks really good but wanted to hear about how they shoot from yall who have one.
http://www.jdberryarchery.com/Appollo.html
Good to hear Lance!!! I've considered replacing my Yahweh for awhile now! I dont know if the brothers are back together or not but they do make one helluva bow!!! I think you'd be tickeled with it! I know I was with my Yahweh and the handful of others I've shot over the years.
James is a great guy. And is always willin to helpout. And i have never shot an apollo but have wanted to. I have however shot a bunch of tai pans. Very similar less fancy version of the apollo. And they are amazing. So i can only imagine the apollo is that much sweeter
I accidentally dropped my Argos on the patio and split the tip... JD Berry rebuilt the tip without charge. Great bowyer and great service.
And by the way, I LOVE my 66" 48@27 Argos (yew and bamboo lams). She is a shooter.
Glad your experience is similar, Lance.
JW
I cannot get ahold of him. I'm calling the number from the website but no voicemail either. I'm interested in the Vixen?? Any other number for him?
I got ahold of him. And now I have a Vixen on order!!! Why do I call bowers?
Brian,Make sure you post pics of it when you get it.What woods did you go with?I've been thinking about getting one for a while now.
I have a Serpentine that I had made years ago. That bow and an old Shrew are the only non Hill style longbows I have left.
The wood and inlay work are top quality. Limb tips are carved into snake heads and it's backed with rock python.Great shooter and really rips an arrow.James builds a great bow!

Right now I'm at red elm core, brown glass back, clear glass belly to show the elm. Wedges In tips, but am unsure of riser wood. I want a domestic wood for the riser, darker wood . Maybe a myrtle? 50@26 68"
Thats great Brian! Like Goshawkin said...keep us updated!
Hey ya Shawn :wavey: ya know the more i look at the bows on his site i think i would prefer the Taipan...im not much into real fancy bows....not that the Taipan isnt beautiful! I will have to ask JD if there is any actuall difference in performance.
JW my Argos is yew with the bamboo cores too....and it is an awesome bow! I was wondering how the feel of shooting the Apollo or Taipan would be compared to mine.
And hey ya Dan! The Yaweh was his older model wasnt it? Which design was it?
Lance
Brian i have a vixen too. Its a sweet bow. And lance also had an argos. taipan to this day is my fave r/d bow out there. I had planned on a another vixen but fell on hard times. Love the one i have.
yes Lance....I dont know what form it came off of... I remember back than they wouldnt build a bow 66'es long though. I picked this one up from Lamont in Minnesooooota on one of my visits. A few buddies had the brothers build them bows, its been years since I've seen one other than my yahweh and that's been gone a year or so now. By far the best looker on his line and it shot great to boot!
I have an Appollo. Taipan should be the same form of Appollo. They are reverse handle and is a bit more stable to point and shoot comparing it with my other Renaissance. Very quiet and no handshock.
James' design and workmanship is great. His service is first class. I always enjoy talking to him and he gave me a lot of good suggestions to improve my shoot.
I just sent James a deposit for a 66" Rennaisance. He is hard to get a hold of especially when he is working on bows but he is fun to talk to when he does answer!
Thats great Chuc! Love to see pictures of it when you get it!
I talked to him this morning and he is having problems with the wiring of his phone
I have decided on real grainy myrtle for the riser.
Brian, I tried to load my pictures of the animals I took in Africa this past June but photobucket has changed and my file is gone.
So, you will need to go to the forum DARK CONTINENT
and click on Africa June 2012. There is a few photos that you might like to see. I had fun and I plan on going back in 2014 for another Cape Buffalo and a leapord and Lion with my longbow.
Of course I will be taking my Vixen. James Berry's craftmanship is second to none and his bows shot very very sweet.
The photos of the animals I took in South Africa were in the last two issues of African Outfitter Magazine as well as James Berry's Vixen Longbow. You can only find it online.
I wanted to talk and couldn't reach him also, how long is the wait time and what did he require down for deposit?
Mr Berry is great and easy to work with. Call him early in the morning. 8:30 a.m. Pacific time. Down payment I think is like twohundred to get the ball rolling.
I might be ordering a "Taipan".
Taipan is very nice. Look at the Renaissance or Apollo.
I like my Renaissance. 66" #57@28 1/2" draw. Yew limbs and arrow inlays. The Renaissance does not only look nice it shoots nice and is very hard hitting.

From what i understand right now he isnt busy at all so it would be a great time to order one!
Now im going to go look at your pics Charles! JD told me about that monster bow you have and your hunt!
I've been thinking of a Vixen for a while, this thread may have pushed me over the edge.
Wow Charles...that was an awesome hunt!!! And that "bush pig" WOW
Those are some nice arrows too!
Here is the link to his post guys.... http://tradgang.com/noncgi/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=27;t=000383;p=1
:clapper:
Talked to him this morning . He said his dog unplugged the phone and he didnt notice for a couple days lol. His wait time is really short at the moment about 2 weeks to a month. But he always gets swamped around february. Then his time will go up. If i can rake up the funds im gonna get another vixen. Time to sell some of my bows i guess.
You know you want to Shawn
Thanks to a little push from Shawn in a PM, I tried calling to order a Vixen. No answer so it'll have to wait until Monday morning. Now I have to start thinking of wood choices.
Lol guess he can be hard to get in touch with . Prolly sanding on a bow. And brian i guess i will have to sell one. Need me another vixen.
Thats what I see. You know which one will go real fast.
Hello James is on the phone with me right now and he said the best time to get ahold of him is after 8:30 AM Pacific Time and fill free to call after 5 PM. James loves to talk archery, is number is (509)299-3029. The down deposit is $100 not $200.
Looks like he is going to busy now with all these Vixens!
Can anyone tell me more about his Renaissance and how it would compare to the Argos?
Well lance its off a different form. But really close to it. Mainly all the extra work with the woods. More lams in the limbs, the arrows inlays alone are amazing. And im sure a pain to make lol.
Well you better order quick before he gets to back logged.
A new vixen in hand and a quiver full of arrows this time of year sounds like a great time!!!!!!!!!!!!
Man, I wish I could scrape together the funds for an Apollo but that will have to wait for another day.
Hope you all enjoy the bows Mr Berry Builds... just enjoying some backyard shooting today with the Argos... hoping I will kill a whitetail in the coming late season. Time will tell.
JW
Thanks for the complement on my arrows lance. I used hickory shafts from allegheny hard woods and did all the rest myself. James really knows his woods and how to make the right choices for shooting heavy arrows. James recommended black locust for my 1026 grain spears that I would be throwing at Cape Buffalo. James should really write a book to pass his knowledge along. I can't tell James thank you enough for all his help with this hunt. James is a brother to me. He's one great guy and he would do anything to help you out.
Posting the pictures of the animals I harvested was not for me but to say thank you to James Berry for his friendship and all his help.
I will say this guys. If your looking for a great broadhead to hunt with buy some Tuffheads. I am going to buy a dozen for my trip to Hunt Axis deer in Hawaii with Ron keeling jr.
I will let you know how I fair on this hunt.
James thank you again
Anyone going to JD Berry's archery shop this week?
I wish i was. I bet u are lol
One of the benifits of living in Washington!...that area is just gorgeous!!!
Yes it is!!!!!!!!! Snow, rivers with steelhead and salmon galore. Great mule deer hunting. Great cougar hunting. Great bear hunting. Great Elk hunting. Oh did I mention GREAT bowyers also
like the one in my backyard, JD Berry.
What, A stringfollow bow? James must have taken my advice after I showed him my John Schultz natural. All Bamboo, no fiberglass.
JD Berry said he had two monster moose in his yard strip'in his tree, a cow and a calve.
An all bamboo bow? Is he gonna make some?
And hey....if JD doesnt mind would you take a few pics when you are there working on your bow? Im sure im not the only one who would like to see them!
Moose in your yard? All we get is the occasional possum or skunk ....but their droppings arent as large :D
Lance no james isnt building an all bamboo bow. Hes buildingg me a string follow bow with bamboo cores and clear glass. Look at my post it will clear it up its on page 2
Lance and Mr.Rackley,
You two are like kids in a candy store but it's bow's on your brain. I was saying I have a Schultz built that way and I would like to have James build me a stringfollow just like it.
You two should come to my place tomorrow and go deer hunting with me and then on Friday Elk opens up and we can chase a few Bulls.
You guys crack me up.
Now that would be a great hunt! And in case we didnt get anything we could always just step out on JD's porch and thump a moose in the head :D
Im pretty sure Shawn said he would do all the skinning and quartering while the rest of us messed around in JD's shop!
Happy Thanksgiving to you all and a very very Happy Thanksgiving to JD Berry. I am going Elk and deer hunting tomorrow. I am going to have fun with my vixen and a sharp stick.
