Charlie,Charlie hello Charlie!!! :campfire:
Alright Guys,
I will have to say a lot of friends have helped me get my first deer with a bow..
I have been bow hunting 21 years. At first I just wanted to get a deer but after my friends were killing big ones I started passing chip shots. I have seen hundreds of deer walk pat me. Since I moved to NY I found a new passion Archery! Its not that I hadn't been shooting, I was. I had a compound and lost interest. Fast forward a few years after rediscovering how much fun a stick and string could be..... Now I am an addict. This is the second deer I have shot at with a trad bow. ( the first was last week and I wounded that one). ((well actually the first was when I was 12 with a bear grizzly))
So I have been having a hard time seeing deer or deer movement on this small farm I received permission to hunt on this year. I have put in a lot of time but think the deer only pass through and mostly at night. The ones that do come through in daylight cross a 30 acre field at any given points.
That brings me to last night. I decided I would do something different so I text my friend Izzy to see what kind of activity a local piece of public land had over this season. He tells me they have been logging.
So this morning I decided to go to the public land. I found a good spot there last year near some bedding but in a travel corridor that allows them to travel during daylight hours undetected. This spot has no less than 12 major trails running through it.
Its about a half mile in. By the time I was all settled, I guess I sweated a bit. I was sitting in my climber that was from Huntryx and my back itched from the sweat.
It was a beautiful morning. rain popped up out of nowhere. the temps were chilly but comfortable.
It was a quiet morning and about 8:30 I was starting to contemplate all the chores I needed to do today. Most were not done :readit:
About 8:35 my morning coffee is starting to press so i decided to stand up and let off some pressure. You know just in case a deer comes in and takes a long time, I figured it would be one last thing to worry about.
The tree I was in didn't have any branches to hang the bow from so I took the arrow off the string and placed it on my seat. I then hooked the bow from a bungee cord. At this point my attention was turned to the project in hand. That's when I looked in the opposite direction I figured a deer would travel from.
DEER. So now its zip up (before going) get my bow up and arrow on the string all the while keeping one eye on the deer and one on my gear making sure I do not clank the stand.
At this point he is closing fast. Too fast. He is coming straight at me and my stand was on the opposite side of the tree from him which allowed me some lee way with movement. He stopped about 5 yards from my tree and I was trying to decide which side he would walk on.
I took a guess and was right.
The deer moved to my left and I was ready for him.
way to go Charlie!! congrats man!
Shhhhhhhh. Don't interrupt. ;)
I knew the shot was steep however when that deer turned his head and was licking his back side, it was all too perfect. He was standing down wind from me, I cant believe he didn't smell me. The fact that its a high traffic public piece probably worked in my favor.
Any How, there he is Perfectly broadside, his head was turned the other way!
Crack!!! I guess I had shot, don't remember much of the details.
I spined him and had to finish him.
I want to thank all of my friends that have helped me get here. The pressure I have been placing on myself to kill a deer with a special bow was a little much. It is a relief to finally have lifted some of it.
I have to thank Steve for helping me today. There is no way I would be out yet, I would still be dragging.
He's in good shape but I was impressed when he could pull my deer on a cart and carry his son at the same time. Thanks again bud, everyone needs as pal like Steve. :archer:
Plus he took some awesome pictures! My self photos didnt work out too well.

It is great to see all the freinds Charlie has out here and the support he gets from every one.
I have 3 sons that hunt and I knew it bugged Charlie that he had not conected with his first bow kill. His youngest brother got his first bow buck a few weeks ago. I am a proud father and concider myself very lucky.
Thank you all. Just to think this all started with my brothers old Bear grizzley that I had bought when I was 16. Still have the bow, but it is no longer in shooting condition.
Chuck,
I hunted hogs with Charlie for a couple of days in SC and I understand why he has so many friends. Charlie is a good man, you raised him well.
Joe

Congrats.RC
I finally have finished Butchering my deer.
He had been shot 2 other times.
Once by a 3 blade broad head with small blades through the front legs. he wasn't limping but the front shanks had greenish gray foul smelling meat which was discarded.
The other person hit him in the scapula. It penetrated a little but appeared to possibly be a mechanical head that didn't open. There was a lot of trauma in the area around that that was discarded as well.
All said, i still have about 40-50 lbs of meat!
Wow! That feller had run a gauntlet.
They are amazingly tough critters. With that much trauma he may have not made it this winter.
Happy for ya Charlie!
... mike ... :jumper: ...

Shameless plug......
It was just nice to sit here and reminisce over a piece of his back strap I found in the freezer and chowed for dinner while remembering the hunt.
Here is the shot that brought him down.
