I am considering trying a shorter bow for tree Stand and ground Blind Hunting. I had 2 Blunders this year so far. I shoot 62" bows. I have a Dalaa Riser with Border Hex limbs for my recurve and a 62"ACS 3 pc on 12' riser as my longbow. In NM Elk Hunting from a blind on a water I caught a limb tip and missed a Huge Bull. Just home from Illinois and I caught a limb tip on my stand on a good 8pt whitetail. Missed the lungs but hit him in the neck. Just lucky to get the 8 pt. First Trad Harvest.
Thanks, Randy
How much shorter do you think you would like to go? Know anyone with a bow in the length your looking at?
Congrats on the harvest!!
I draw 29". I have tried some 60" long bows and do not seem to shoot them near as good ?? Maybe a shorter recurve.
I have a little over a 29" draw and love my 52" Cascade Nighthawk recurve and my 56" Cascade Brushhawk longbow.
I have a couple of Martin Rebels that shoot pretty sweet. They are 52" bows
Check out the St Jude's Miss Hope an Miss Faith in the thread up top. Roman makes several great short bow models. I have a Bobcat and love it!
try a big jims thunderchild,
58" works great with my 28" draw and I know others that draw up 29.5 and 30 with no problems,
and you cant beat the performance of the thunderchild.
Larry
I love a 56" bow out of the tree. Even off the ground as far as that goes. I use a regular summit Viper and have no problems with 56" bow. I do not use the seat back though, I leave it all folded together and sit on it with the seat straps as tight as I can get them so it is not hanging low. I shoot a 56" Bruin most of the time, and love it.
You can't beat a 50" Ambush recurve from Two Tracks...fast and quiet!

I also have a 29" draw and have recently been shooting a 60" Toelke Chinook. I really like it. I talked to Dan about it and he said his 58" Chinook is just as good at longer drawlengths. Just an option for you. There are lots of great options out there
I have a 54" Big Jim TC, and I draw 28", and it works just fine.
58" Kanati drawn to 29" works great for me.
TimberGhost....
Take a hard look at the Shrew Classic Hunter.
Ron's design and Gregg's craftsmanship come together beautifully. I have 3 Shrew Classic hunters all 54" 28" and at 48#, 52#, 55#. All shoot smooth and handle great on stand. Lots of good short bows out there and Shrew's are worth a look.
Since you already have a Dalaa riser you could team it with medium limbs and have a shorter bow that will support your draw.
With our Epic recurve limbs a medium will give you a strung bow with the same length as most 58" recurves.
Mike
TwoTracks Ambush, short, quiet, fast, great fit and finish, superb pricing.
Is your Dalaa riser the 17" model. If so get some ILF short limbs and it will make a 58" bow. How short did you want to go?
I draw 29"s and have shot and highly recommend Dan Toelke's little Kestral, a 52" recurve. It is extremely well-mannered, very fast and easily accomodated my longer draw. Pete Ward did a highly favorable review on one a couple of years ago.
This same question has been on my mind for a while now. I have been looking at two different bows and they both get really good feedback. One is a Donnie Dow 54" longbow and the other is a Timberhawk "Strike" 54" recurve. I can't make up my mind.
Congrats on the 8pt. Randy, I still have the metal ACS.....Bobby
Look at a Hoots recurve or longbow. I have a Hoots 56" recurve that is smooth as butter at a little over 28". They are priced reasonably and nice lookers too.
chucks ambush recurve from two tracks is a sweet bow! super fast and super short! I love it!
I just got my wife a set of Bob Morrison's super short MAX I carbon/foam limbs for her DAS riser. It makes her a 56" bow that I can shoot with my 28" draw without stacking or finger pinch. The limbs are unbelievably stable and accurate. In addition they are very fast and VERY quiet. I'm getting myself a set of his shorts to put on my DAS and that will give me a 58" bow. He thinks I will like the smoothness of it better than the supershorts. I cannot believe how well I can shoot those limbs. It takes a lot to impress me but once I shot her new limbs I was on the phone to Bob very soon after that.
I would go with either a Shrew, Big Jim Thunderchild, or Black widow PCH.
I second the shrews, also striker makes a longbow/recurve hybrid that is short and shoots well.
The Black Mountain Sheepeater is only 50" long and shoots very well...I've owned 2 and they both drew nicely to 29 inches....
Shoot straight, Shinken

If you are not in too big a hurry Kirk, Sasquatch is coming out with a dandy reverse riser bow with some incredible limbs. I have one in a 52 top mount and am working on a 48 top mount but not thoroughly tested yet.Should have both in a couple of months.
God bless, Steve
I don't think you could go wrong with many of the bows suggested here. I personally would list a Shrew Classic Hunter as my first choice, but a Thunderchild, a Morrison, or a Hoots would all be excellent choices. My wife has a bow built by Steve Tallant (Sixby) that is very nice, and I have no doubt his new bows will shoot exceptionally well. Regardless of which bow you choose, don't think that something fairly short won't do everything you want -- and do it well.
Allan
Check out the Crooked Stic as well. He has a 56" longbow that smokes an arrow. I got one in a bow swap from another site. Amazingly easy to shoot.
Dave
hey Randy grats on the 8.I can't believe nobody is yelling for pics :readit: .
Anyway I'm pullin 29.5 shooting a BW PSA 11 58" @ 56 lbs I find it very smooth and forgiving on stand.
Look at a Hoots recurve or longbow. I have a Hoots 56" recurve that is smooth as butter at a little over 28". They are priced reasonably and nice lookers too.
X2
I can see in the ground blind the bow length problem, but I shoot a 66" longbow and have no issues from a treestand.
Thanks for ALL the suggestions. I like my border limbs and their performance. I may try a 15" Dalaa riser. I also am going to check into some of the shorter recommendations you guys made.
It was dark, dark, when I recovered my buck and pictures are very poor. Not a monster buck but VERY SPECIAL being my first with Traditional Equipment.
Thanks Again, Randy
I wanted something shorter for hunting out of my climber so i got a thunderchild 56" and i draw 30". Works perfect and shoots just as good as my 66" PLx but is way more maneuverable.
I also hunt out of a climber. I hit my side bar. Thought I was clear but the tip of my rubber limb protecter just nicked the side bar. i can no longer hunt out of hang ons. I loose my balance and do not feel comfortable anymore. Thanks for all the GREAT TIPS.
Randy
Why not put your Border ILF limbs on a 13" riser, Wood or metal your choice.
I am considering trying a 15" dalaa riser. Thanks for the tips

+1. I'm shooting a 1970 model and drawing it 29". With all of the old ones out there they can be tried without a big investment.
dont discount a Howatt Mamba 58" I've got one 55lbs. its a sweet bow. very low handshock, no stacking until over 29" where it does ramp up a little.
175 fps @ 28", 450gr arrow
cheers
Personally I would stick with what you have, day in and day out longer bows are more comfortable to shoot, just an opinion from the other side. There is a reason Olympic archers shoot longer bows.
I draw 29 and hunted with a 56 inch bow for about 5 years. I won't go short again. My 60 inch is a nice comprimise. You just get too much string angle cranking back short bows and then your release needs to be great to compensate. If you torque the string at all or have a penchant to youll find them finicky. I might consider 58 with a short riser ilf but be leary of all the hype. Just think of bow limbs as levers the shorter the limb the less force it takes to bring things out of balance.
I've got close to a 30" draw and love the 56" Big Jim Thunderchild...
I can't argue with any of the other bows listed, but the Thunderchild is my choice... Well, I do have a 56" Kwyk Styk also... 2 sets of limbs for it... it's pretty easy to get along with also... ;)
Make a call to Mike and see what limbs he can offer you for your riser. His static limbs are awesome.
Or
When hunting with a 62 or longer bow, I don't sit low. Just have a small seat to prop my but on. Almost stand. 60 or shorter bows no problem with my style of shooting.
You have to shoot a bow that you are comfortable with canting the bow more. If you have a 29" release, you may like a bow with a foward handle like a shorter Black Widow. I am 5'9" with a 26 plus draw and I have no trouble shooting a 68" longbow out of a climber tree stand. As far as shooting from blinds, they should not have roofs on them anyway, try a ghillie suit.
