Title: Election Day Double Header

Election day found me in one of my favorite tree stands in a river bottom. The wind was right to hunt this stand and the rut is under way here in Maryland. The temperature was 26 degrees when I stepped out of the truck. Cold but manageable without a hard wind.

I've been looking for the right shot at a nice buck or a doe but nothing so far this year and the freezer was empty. 3 does came by early but were too skidish and there was too much brush in the way. I was starting to wonder if I was going to get any good opportunities at all. After a while this 5 pt. came by. Not exactly what I was looking for in a buck but at about 22 yards he presented me with a good broadside shot. At the moment of truth I decided it was time. The shot looked good but unless they go down right away I'm never sure. He went about 50 yards and stopped. His tail reaction told me he was hit good but he managed to walk over a knoll at the rail road tracks.

While sitting there for another 25 minutes I was ready to go track him when this doe came along and gave me a good 18 yard quartering away shot. She went down in sight. The buck ended up going about 80 yards and the doe 40.

I shot them with my Canarywood Firefly FX Route 66 (60" and 48# @ 28") I got from Tim at Braveheart a couple of months ago. Gold tip shaft and 145 grain Ace standards. The family will be eating good through the holidays.

The Firefly bows are really IMO an outstanding bow. They seem to fly under the radar a bit and I don't know why.

Thanks for the comments, gentlemen. I hope you are all enjoying your hunts to the fullest, regardless of game taken. As I get older I'm enjoying the entire experience even more. This was just a special ocassion.

owlbait.. I do like the term VETERAN over old geezing hunter.    ;)

Really nice. I'll be 69 in a couple of weeks. Can't do much about the gray but I try to keep in shape. Want to hunt until they have to drag me out of the woods.
