hey, guys, been a while.  thanks for callin' me out, I deserve it...

Tracy and Tom are right, I've kinda been on a milk carton lately.  A bum shoulder has kept me from shooting 3-D, and I have been getting a lot of flyfishing in.  But it's huntin' season, and I have been doing a little tree sittin'.

My son and I hunt with ksbowman on his spread;  plenty of deer, just a matter of being in the right spot.  I've had kind of a dry spell going on deer, and was really needing to get a notch in my quiver.  Ben had set up a new stand at the north end of the farm, and his son-in-law had shot a turkey a few weeks back.  I had sat this stand last week, and while I didn't see deer, I got to watch a mama bobcat and her kitten hunt around me for about half an hour (including a cool rabbit chase)  The stand was in a good spot, and I knew it would produce if we gave it a chance...

As I walked in, I bumped a couple of deer from beneath a spreading osage tree.  I watched a white tail bob through the woods toward a creekside stand that my son hunts a lot.  The other deer froze behind a stand of mixed trees.  I slowly eased along a fenceline, trying to herd the deer back into the creek.  I used the ol' G. Fred trick of walking "toe-heel", keeping as much brush between us as possible.  When I reached the edge of the timber, I saw that it was a young spike, who was craning his neck to see what was coming.  When he finally made me, he turned, snorted, and bounded back into the creek bottom.  I moved on up the line, patting myself on the back for keeping a wayward deer in play....

It was a beautiful night to be on stand;  little breeze, temp in the 60's.  All we need were a few critters to move:

A couple of times, I closed my eyes and listened to the woods (was actually dozing a little)  A "murder" of crows was harassing a redtail hawk on farther up the creek.  Squirrels tightroped along tree limbs.  Peckers tapped out a rhythmn on tree trunks.  Even if a deer didn't show up, it was a hell of a lot better than sittin' in my office...

Way to Lamb it up Kevin! Don't give to them all at once or you might spoil them!

As the sun dropped and the shadows lengthened, things quieted down, and I sat up and grabbed the bow off the hook, laying it across my lap.  I started hearing a few random "yips" from coyotes warming up for their evening chorus.  A slight rustling behind me made me think of a squirrel getting some last-minute hunting done.  However, the rustling continued, and as it got closer it picked up the cadence of steps in the leaves.  I slowly looked over my shoulder and saw the spike picking his way up the creek bottom.

He wasn't exactly in a hurry, but it was evident that he had a destination in mind.  He moved unhurriedly up the creek until he hit the fenceline, and paused...this was the "moment".  If he turned right, he'd go back across the creek towards where Ben's son-in-law was in stand.  If he jumped the fence, he'd continue on up the creek and out of play.  If he turned left....

...he turned left.

He was about 25 yards to my right, and moving towards me and to my left - perfect.  Each time he stepped behind a tree, I scooched a little more into position, and situated my bow.  When he stepped out in the clear, I began my draw....

One thing the shoulder injury has caused me to do is to pay particular attention to my form;  I can pull back with little pain as long as I use my back muscles...if I try to yank back with my shoulder, my eyes cross.  So I sloowwlly squeezed my shoulder blades together and when the middle finger hit the corner of my mouth, the arrow was gone.  The Stinger smacked high on the shoulder, and the young buck went straight down, spined.  Once he quit thrashing, I sent another arrow through his lungs, insuring the quick recovery:

Not a huge deer, but much needed confidence boost, and sustenance for the winter.

Congrats! You are right; an afternoon in a tree (even if no deer show) is always better than a day at work!

Congrats again,
