This season has been, at times, a comedy of errors. I missed a doe a couple of days ago, I have missed turkeys three times, some big bucks where I hunt have always been in the wrong place at the wrong time, ranch dogs chased deer one morning, and the list goes on. I have hunted mostly from the ground, but also from a tree stand, and without fail something has seemed to go wrong.
This afternoon I rolled into my parking area to have about 20 deer bedded there. I decided after spooking them that I would hunt a ground hide in a marshy area where I missed the doe the other day. My spot of concealment is next to a heavily used trail, and it sees lots of traffic.
As I hiked in to my spot, I spooked 6 bucks within 30 yards of where I was going to sit in some thick brush. I figured that this was going to be yet another fruitless and frustrating afternoon, but decided to sit it out until dark.
It didn't take that long. I hadn't sat for 5 minutes when I saw a big doe heading my way, and her direction of travel made me believe that she would come down the trail, and with luck give me about a 20 yard broadside. Strangely enough, that is exactly what she did.
The trail runs by a cattail swampy area, and of course that is just where she ran after being hit. She expired about 40 yards into the marsh, and I had about a half mile drag to get to where I could load her in the truck. Success was sweet after lots of frustration, and now I can concentrate on a buck. Life is good!
