Title: Treestand or Pop Up??
Post by: Whitetail Chaser on November 01, 2012, 09:47:00 AM
Just wanted to see what the tradgang crew would advise for my situation.

I have the chance to hunt whitetails on a 220 acre property over the Thanksgiving holiday. I will be hunting alone, and my window for hunting is only 3 days.

I can probably set up a stand on Thursday and hunt Friday thru Sunday.

Should I try to hunt out of a pop-up or a treestand?  By the way, I only own one pop-up and one treestand.

I have not been on this property since last November. These three days may be the only days I get to hunt this location this year.

Any thoughts?

Brett

Go with the stand, takes deer a while to get used to a pop up blind, unless you can totally cover it with brush and have a solid background. Just my 2 cents

I would set BOTH up, myself. What do you have to lose. You will have two locations to choose from this way.

I will be loaded down in the truck with wife and kids. I guess I will take both if I have room.

Thanks for all the input.

Stand. I took my avatar buck in the same situation as you. Never hunted there, had 3 days. Set up Friday afternoon on the closest deer run I found... high to see as much as possible. Saw deer coming to a corner of a field Saturday morning about 200 yards away, got down at 10:30 to walk over and check the trail they were traveling and possibly move my stand. Never got the chance, he was following a doe up the same trail and I snuck one in as he passed by.
You can see far, and move if need be.

yep, go with the stand. blinds are great but takes deer a while to "warm up" to them. I have one on the farm that's been there since April and the deer are still VERY cautious around it.

Tree stand for sure, but don't rule out natural ambush sites and ground hunting.  Than is my preferred method hunting and I have taken a lot of deer that way.

Good luck to you.

Bob.

I have killed many a deer on this property over the past 24 years.

For quick hunts like this, I've been neglecting the longbow for more modern hunting weapons that go 'bang'.

Trying to stick to my bow this year.

When faced with a quick hunting op I take a small folding stool and a pair of pruning shears. I find the most traffic/sign, the best cover that will let me take advantage of the prevailing wind, and build a small natural blind in it. That's worked amazingly well for me....

Bring both set up the stand but use the blind if you need to move.

Treestand= less scent at ground level.

Do both on either sides of the property to take advantage of a changing wind direction.

Both is a good idea... but I do think your best chance will be from the treestand. I seen this thread after starting one on still hunting. Still hunting is loads of fun.. but you do need to know the terrain intimately to be successful. (IMO)

Good luck!
