Well my 1st trad season is still going great. I am learning a lot and this weekend I learned a few more things. I was in my stand at the crack of dawn and after 45 min had 2 does and 3 fawns coming my way. At 12 yards, I started to put pressure on the string and the lead doe busted me. They did not blow but walked away. As I was hanging my bow up, I saw a buck. He must have seen the does and started walking toward them. I had my opening picked at 16 yards and when he came through, I let the string go. The next thing I saw as an arrow in the hind ham and blood everywhere. I gave him an hour and got my dad and wife to help out. After the first 50 yards, I found 2 beds. We kicked him up and that did him in. I knew that I had to push him to keep the blood moving. He went a total of 150 yards but I got very very lucky. I did not mouth grunt to stop him and from the time I let go to the hit was 2 feet in distance. (I am honest enough to admit I messed up) Like I said I am learning a lot. I was not happy with the hit but I am happy that I got him and now I have my first trad buck. He is in the freezer and I am ready to fill my last doe tag.
Sorry about the long story.

Nice buck and great pic buddy! You did great by staying on him and finding your deer. Good on ya!
Bob. :archer:
I'm happy for you.
Congratulations!
You did the right thing and your perseverance paid off.
If we are honest with ourselves, it's almost always a learning process, some lessons are more important but all learning is good.
Thanks for sharing.
God bless,Mudd
Good job sir! Congratulations on your 1st!
Great job, Congrats. Do not feel bad everybody has made a bad shot. Glad you got him.
Congrats, on a fine Deer, we are always learning. Great follow up.
Congrats!
Good Job!
Congrats and that stuff is part of it. Has happened to us all.
Great job! Congratulations ! :clapper:
You learn something new everytime out, Congrats!
Chest hits 70% recovery - ham hits 70% recovery. The femerol artery is a deadly hit but not a good place to aim. I have hit 3 there and all were found. If a deer is turning away or walking or too far it is easy to miss the intended spot and end up in the ham. They often lay down and stop the bleeding till they move again if pushed. Your story is a good one (not at all too long) and filled with good information and humility. Nice deer and thanks for sharing.
great and honest story congrats !
Way to go!!!

Congrats AND good job on the follow-up. The follow -up/trailing in hunting is one of the most interesting and rewarding aspects of the hunt for me.
Yes sir, good for you. You got to learn a lot with positive results. Now you can assist others in the future if they have poor hits, you have some good tracking experience.
That's a heck of a neck on that buck!
Sometimes it's better to be lucky, but you can't always count on it..... There will come a time when everything is done correctly, the shot executed to perfection, right behind the shoulder, and the deer disappears like a ghost.....
There are very, very few seasoned hunters that haven't lost an animal ..... it happens under the best conditions now and then.
Congrats on your first Trad buck.
Congratulations! I'm guessing he was still walking, when you shot? If he was, see if you can find a way to practice that shot. A taut rope stretched between a couple of tree, a bag target, and a pulley system will make it easy to gauge how much you need to lead them by.
By the way, there is no need to apologize for the length of your story. We've got some seriously long-winded folks around here, myself included, and a story the length of yours would be considered the introductory sentence to their tales.
Shaun said it all.
Nice picture.
Congrats.

Congrats on your first buck!!
Nice job. Always a tough decision to stop a deer or not. I missed one because I stopped her and she jumped the string. Congrats on making the smart choice on the follow up.
great recovery!
Congrats!

Awesome job Matt, way to hang in there tracking. And no need to apologize for long stories, the stories and photos are what makes sharing the hunt so appealing! Congrats!

Some fine eating right there!!! Congratulations on the first and on a good, honest story instead of I hit him a bit further back than I wanted too. You come right out and say you messed up. How refreshing and honest!!!! I applaud you and respect you a lot for doing that. Beautiful buck and glad you got him.
God bless you, Steve
Good for you. Nice buck.
Congrats on the nice deer!
Great buck. You'll never forget that first one.
Awesome job congrats on the first buck. That one you will remember for a long time. I have to admit I still learn things every time I shoot at one good or bad. HAHA
:clapper:
Congrats - Truth is it happens and there is nothing more rewarding than recovering a miss hit or a hit you did not intend to make.
On a side note it you put those vibration dampeners at the fades and not out by the limb tips you get nearly the same effect w/o loosing the KE from the added weight.
Congratulations on a fine buck!
Your shot was very similar to what happened to me this year, I hit my buck in the same area, that is just part of hunting. Great job! and good story!
Nice job...congrats on a fine deer.

I don't care who you are, that's funny right there...
Good job, you made the right decision and made the best of less than perfect circumstances.
If the deer is dead and recovered in a timely manner it is indeed a perfect shot!!!
You did all the right things in that you: Learned from your mistake. You did everything possible to recover your animal and you candidly admit to everything. Congratulations! I wish more people would do this (especially the non-trad hunters).
Shaun said what was on my mind after reading your post.
Well done Sir!
Way to stay with it
Any time you can put meat in the freezer and learn something is time well spent.Well done, thanks for sharing.
Leland
Congrats
Nice buck glad you recovered him .
Thanks for the kind words. It felt like I was typing a book when I posted it. As far as being honest. I just wanted to tell the truth and I hope someone can learn from it. As the deer was in the bed, he stopped bleeding. When we jumped him, I fould blood clots. I told my wife, this is a good sign because he will start bleeding again. The Snuffer did the job. I never looked down for blood if you know what I mean. I was lucky because I did not hit the bone. There was mass trama to say the least.
Way to hang in there!Nice buck and congrates!
Good Shootn'!

Congrates on your first trad Buck. Don't feel bad about the hit. Been there done that. Next time you'll smoke em.
Made a gut shot on a doe that jumped my string today. It is a bad feeling to put a bad shot on one but great job in persistance. I am very fortunate to have a very good blood dog and recovered my doe today as well.
Well done.
Good job.

The important thing is you recovered him. Good job.

Nice one. Congrats!
Most all of us have been there. You stuck with it and made it right. That is what matters. Great work and congrats on your first.
My first trad buck was very similar. He's in my avatar. Went through both hams and thankfully hit a big vessel on the way through. My next kills were better. It's a process and there is no end point. Great job.
Well done, congrats!
congrats on your first buck and learning, we all still are.
Sometimes a little good luck is a great thing to have in your corner!
Congrats on your firdt buck.
Bisch
You were persistant and it paid off. Congrats on a fine buck!
Great Job. I did the same thing on a Cow Elk, thankfully recovered her after 200 yds. Life is full of lessons!
Good work. Its nice to notch the belt...so they say
Great recovery on a fine Wisconsin buck! Congratulations! Now, go get that doe tag filled. :clapper:
