Title: leather treatment for cordovan tab?
Post by: Zradix on October 31, 2012, 05:08:00 PM
Hi,

I use and REALLY like EW bateman cordovan tabs.
I've finally had one get stiff and crack on me from repeatedly getting wet and dry.

What's the best thing to use to keep it supple without softening it too much or stiffining it when it gets cold?

I'm thinking neetsfoot or maybe baby/mineral oil.
...maybe some kind of silicone product...?

Thanks

I'd never use any kind of fluid product on leather tabs or gloves but I've found that cornstarch works very well on both to keep them slick. It has a very small amount of oil that will seep into the leather after awhile. I keep a small sack, like a resin bag, in my daypack just for that purpose.

Thanks for the tip.

I'm looking for something that'll keep it from drying out though...that doesn't make the tab stiff when it gets cold though..been there done that..lol

I use a bit of Sno-Proof and heat with a hair drier. Seems to keep things in good shape!

Neets foot would be a no no.  It will allow the tab to stretch out of shape.  Mineral oil ??  Stay with a product like Lexol leather conditioner it's used by saddle and tack makers to keep the leather from drying and cracking.  Steve Catts recommends it for his leather products.

I'm a believer in the Lexol conditioner. Great stuff. After thorough treatment rub some parafin into the face of the tab.
