Title: Buck at the blind
Post by: Bill Carlsen on October 29, 2012, 09:44:00 AM
You know that the hunting is always the best before a storm. Laura and I went out this afternoon as the storm should be upon us late tomorrow. Such situations cause wildlife to feed heavily....somehow they know things will be stormy. Well, about 4 PM a four point buck visited Laura...twice...but did not offer her a shot. It is amazing how close they can be and still not give you an opportunity. She watched the buck walk up towards my Double Bull blind. I had planned on hunting the stand I got a doe from last month but the wind was all wrong. I knew it would be good for Laura so I went back and sat in my blind...I had a black sweater, gloves and facemask, all necessities for shooting in a blind...and at 4:15 PM the four pointer appeared 15 yards from me. An arrow took him through one lung and the liver...he was not as broadside as he appeared or managed to move at the shot. I found the fletched end of my arrow and went to get Laura. I did not want to bother her but with the storm coming I thought we should get right on the trail. Normally we let the other person hunt undisturbed til dark. The blood was pretty good and Laura immediately found the front half of my arrow (this hunting is getting expensive). He went about 100 yards. He was only a four pointer but I bet that he weighs in at over 140# dressed. He had a huge body. When we tried to take pictures it turned out my camera battery was dead so Laura took several with her phone.

Interestingly enough the buck was at Laura's stand twice. But he offered her not shot. She watched as he took the trail that led to my bling...about 125 yards away. She told me that she was thinking, "If Bill is in his blind...he's dead"! She didn't know if I was there or not as I had not made my mind up and wanted to check the wind at my "best" spot.

I was shooting my original Gen I Das riser with the original short Winex limbs set at about 58#. Arrow was an Axis Nfused 400, 29" with a 200 grain Razorcap. Fletching was four 3.5 " shield cut feathers with a 75 X 105 geometry.

Good shooting Bill, this storm front has accounted for quite a few freezers getting their fill.

Normally the blood trails I get with Razorcaps are about half of this one. It turns out that I hit him dead center right in back of the left shoulder...at least that is what the fletching told me. However, upon recovery the arrow got one lung, liver and the back of the other lung. The arrow got two holes but without the solid double lunger he made it 100-125 yards but even so the trail wasn't too difficult to figure out. The best part of it was he died on a scrape line about 75 yards off our property line where we have permission to hunt. Never knew the scrape line was there. After the storm passes I'll be setting up another stand in there. Laura can hunt it until firearms season when I can start hunting again. I've used up all my archery tags  but can still hunt with my bow when the firearms season opens in about 2 weeks.

Laura is psyched that she has the whole place to  herself for a few weeks. She should do fine as she is ten times more patient than I am. I'm a bit more like the blind squirrel that finds an occasional nut. I spend more time in the woods so the odds are just better that I will stumble into something before the season ends.
