Title: Help me pick my first bow!
Post by: BoonDock on October 28, 2012, 11:19:00 PM
Hey guys,

I am in the market for my first bow! I am currently unsure of my draw length, but for my compound I shoot 29". I know that I need to go with a lighter pound bow for my first one, but this bow will be used a hunter more than it will be for recreation. I plan to do a lot of shooting, but the ultimate use of the bow will be for hunting, so I don't want to go too light. I believe the legal pound limit in my state is 40#. I am a left handed shooter and I know that will limit my selection. I do not want the cheapest bow I can find but I don't really want $1500 bucks in a setup either. What are some quality bows that are available and what would be my best option as as far as recurve, longbow, ect..

Thanks!

Check out lefties are us...I'm sure they'll be able to get you started within your budget

You really need to try some and see what you like. At least get a bow that is 40# and see if that feels good to you. 500-600 dollars is lots for a great bow.  I would lean towards an R/D longbow.
Join a club where there may be another trad archer or two.

Go to a shoot or two and see about trying some different bows out, including weights, lengths, and styles. I started with a recurve. Just picked a longbow and like it too. It's a completely different feel to it since its so much lighter. Most recurves will have grips that feel closer to a compound, but there are longbows out there with a similar grip too. So, best advice is to go try some and have fun!

I agree with Bjorn, try to make it to some shoots and try some bows, join a club or just get with other trad shooters in your area, you'll get to try some bows and meet people who can help you in your transition.
