Title: Great Plains Kiowa Recurves ????
Post by: skychief on October 27, 2012, 04:59:00 PM
Anybody ever try one of these Kiowas.

I have several friends shooting Bill's (of Great Plains) longbows, but have never seen/shot any of his recurves besides a "long curve".

Thoughts and opinions appreciated about the Kiowa!

Thanks very much, Skychief.

Its an excellant bow. That was my 1st bow many years ago.Its his base model. Its nice looking though IMO with the shedua riser with bubinga and maple accent stripes and brown glass with maple cores.I like the forward set grip. Its easy shooting and plenty powerful.A well designed bow!

I had him make me one with everything the same as his cazador standard recurve.  It cost more that way.  I did love that bow.

I have a #45 Kiowa and its performance is outstanding, light weight, fast cast, quiet and virtually no hand shock. The only thing I found that is a little odd is the recommended brace height is between 7.25" and 7.50" but I have to get mine to almost 9" to quiet her down. Overall, it is an excellent bow.

Thanks for the feedback guys!

DayTripper, that is an unusually low recommended brace height, huh?

The one piece Great Plains recurves are excellent bows. Smooth and forgiving. I currently have two, a Rio Bravo and a Cazador. And I have owned several others. As for brace height, all of mine have have behaved best at 8 1/4- 8 3/8".

I think the recommnded brace hieght is not abnomally low for most recurves.
But for a forward handle recurve like the Kiowa it sounds low.For instance I shoot a widow PTF or PA at around 8.5" to 9" and both have the forward set handle/grip not unlike the Great Plains.
Its easy to play around with brace hieght until you find the sweet spot where its quietest.

You are correct sirs. I had a brainfart moment. The recommended brace height is 8.25" to 8.50".  :dunno:
