Title: Working Man's Longbow
Post by: LandryHood on October 25, 2012, 01:07:00 PM
I have recently became quite obsessed with Traditional Archery. After growing out of my youth compound, and not being able to afford a new compound, I picked up my grandfather's recurve he had given me. The Bow works great. It's an old Ben Pearson Pinto. Im looking for a new one, however. What is a great and affordable hunting longbow.

it would be good to include what price you are saying is affordable, because everyone has their own ideas as far as that goes.

I would look for used here on the adds for sure! Sometimes you can get a steal of a deal on a nice custom. there are several good mass produced longbows. Everyone likes shooting something different so if you can try a few out that will be a big help!

Bamabows at  www.bamabows.com. (http://www.bamabows.com.)  Nates builds the hunter model which is very affordable. Another source is the classifieds. Lots of quality bows for a fraction of their cost.

Depends on what you want to spend or can afford....lots of used bows on the classifieds. A great place to start is a Bear Montana, used they are fairly priced and just a good "working mans longbow". Shop around ....you'll find the bow for you!

If you are looking for a longbow with somewhat of a recurve grip then take a look at the Stik by Don Dow.  I like his 54"er and think it's the perfect hunting bow with my 27 1/2".

I'll second Bamabows and throw in Omega longbows. I have both, the fit and finish on the Bama is really nice and very quiet. The Omega has very nice lines, but is made strictly from American hardwoods and not as fancy, is quick as you'll find anywhere close to the price. You won't go wrong with either.

If you've got more time than money, the seven lakes bow blanks are a great value.  They run about half the cost of a finished bow.  You supply the sandpaper, time and a coat of finish.

Last one I bought I think I gave $225 for.

I have a longbow from Mike at Maddog and it shoots smooth, fast, quiet and looks good too.
His prices are well in the "working man" catagory and he is a great guy to deal with.

It's hard to give you advice without some more information. Are you looking for a Hill style longbow (American flat longbow), a mild reflex/deflex bow, or a hybrid? Does length matter? What is your draw length?

As has been said, there are often great deals in the classifieds.

If you want new, custom made, Jason Kendall builds a great hybrid longbow at a reasonable price, his Kanati. Hill style bows are not outrageously expensive if you stick with standard riser woods, colored glass, and standard core wood (varies with the bowyer). Northern Mist, Howard Hill Archery, and several others are available and are quality bows.

I tend to lean toward the classified ads myself. You can buy and try used bows, then trade or resell them for close to what you paid if they don't work out for you. I've tried a bunch!

My Kanati will never leave me. Other bows are subject to change.

Omega's are very affordable. They are made to order so you get the specs that want. Kegan is a great up and coming boyer that takes a lot of pride in his work.

As you have seen, many people have very strong opinons regarding bows. That's because there really are a lot of quality bows available. My advice is try as many as you can, so you can get a feel for characteristics that particularly appeal to you. I agree strongly with those who suggest you look in the classified section, as you can sometimes get a really good deal. Suffice it to say, though, that whatever longbow you buy, it won't be the last yo will ever want. Longbows are a true addiction. But man, what fun.

Classifieds for sure. But for those wanting a new bow, if a hybrid is what I wanted I'd go with Omega, if a mild D/R was my goal I'd buy a Bear Montana or a Sky trophy, for the straight limbed if go Bama Hunter.
