Hey Gang,
If you were following my "bow build along" post, you probably read that South was building new static limbs for his "Original Riser". If you didn't get a chance to read it, South decided to develop new static limbs for the "Original Riser" due to all of the positive feedback he got from his first set of static limbs that he built for the "Hybrid Riser".
Although it's not quite ready for production, I can answer any questions that you may have as my bow just arrived today.
I'll be posting some informal results in the next few days.
And yes, if you own the "Original Riser", these limbs will fit. Although you will still need to send in your bow for slight modifications.
Thank you!
Ryan

SWEET...cant wait Ryan
In anticipation, I twisted a string yesterday.

Now time for my informal testing. I'll also try to compare it to my old 56" in Dynamic.
Looking good Ryan !
Ryan...you have one of the neatest archery benches I've seen...mine looks a little more chaotic :help: Oh yeah..awesome looking bow too!!
If I were to buy another bow right now it would likely be one of these. Frankly the grip is the most intriguing thing to me. I'm wondering how similar it is to the Fox High Sierra? I know a lot of the Oregon bowyers have similar influences but have unique differences as well.
That is nice! South is a true artist and a amazing bowyer!! I love the bow that he built me!! Shoots like a dream!
Thanks Art, thanks to you, I may be also experimenting with some string stuff for this bow.
Thanks Nathan.
Aaron, I think I get more comments about my workbench then anything else in my archery arsenal. Just yesterday, I got a comment, "nice bow, but what brand shelvings are those" :D
Roy, I'm not familiar with Fox, so I wouldn't be able to compare. I'd be more than happy to take more pictures of the grip. Just let me know. I love the grip, even more because I was able to give South my input right there at the shop. ;)
Andrew, totally agree!!!
Aloha!
Ryan
Ryan..looking good, your gonna get me in trouble since South's build lead time is pretty good right now :) and plus that bow looks absolutly amazing, I told you bud the 8190 material is gonna be the bomb..wait till you try it on this bow..looking forward rest of your reports and test and great pics also
I was talking to Bill and found out that you were building the "MM" strings. It was one of the quietest things I've ever used. Now to practice....
Yep..the MM string is easy to build..if you want I can show you sometime...cant wait to see your test results
Has South ever thought of putting a thin veneer on the belly of the riser to cover up the bolts?

MM String? :dunno:
Keith, I'll let South know your thoughts.
Hermon, Mountain Mufflers. It was a string that I used on one of my old bows. I just found out that Art built those.

Yep, I agree completely. Even agree witH the Fox comparison. I just want to get ahold of one and see if it feels THAT good. :bigsmyl:
Keith, just to let you know, South has a " test drive" program.
The grip is the best I have shot. Most repeatable, and my hand just slides into place like wearing a glove. South is a great guy to work with and Ryan will give you the straight scoop with an additional helping of integrity when he gives us the review.
Thanks for the kind words Mike!
With all this "grip talk", I need to post some pics. I have a "point & shoot" shooting style and this grip works well for me. Please keep in mind that I did "customize my grip a little.

SWEET RISER RYAN!!!! how thick is the throat and kinda looks like the riser is offset slightly to get bones in alignment for a more comfortable grip
The throat is 1.75" x 1". I had him slim the throat for my small hands.
Yes, it is offset. I know everyone's built a little different, but it fits may hand perfect when I naturally point towards the target.
Does this picture help to see how my hand fits with the offset?
After building the string, it was time to see how it shot. Step one for me is the paper tuner. For myself, if I can't tune it, I won't shoot it.
Added the quiver full of arrows. All my tuning is done with my full hunting set up.
First string and second string of shots. I had a nock low, a nock left and two good shots in the first string.
For an initial set up, I was happy with the second string of shots.
I was curious, so I ran it through the chrono. It was just for kicks, It's not the exact number. I didn't have someone to verify my draw length.
I'll get better readings tomorrow when my buddy comes over. We'll also compare some speeds with other Stalker bows in similar weights.
The data won't be perfect though, I'm not using a shooting machine and trigger. It'll be finger released by me, but I will shoot it at least five times or more and take the average. Although not 100% accurate because of human error, personally I prefer the data that's coming from the "real life application".
Keep it coming Ryan ! This is fun !
Love the bow hand set pictures! Looks very comfortable and the knuckle angle is terrific.
Sorry if I missed it but I couldn't find a draw weight spec for the bow at your 26" draw length? Also, what was the weight of the arrow going through the chronograph?
Can you really feel a difference in the draw with the static limb tips vs. standard?
Great looking bow, love the write up too...
Pictures are perfect. That's the grip size I prefer. Good speed for the weight and draw length. Will kill anything on the island and the mainland as well Looks like I'm gonna be in the market for a stalker as soon as I sell my thunderchilds Can't wait to see how the bow compares to the hybrid static. Looking forward to your results and thank you for doing this. Will open a lot of eyes that's for sure
Thanks Nathan!
Roy, the bow is 53# @ 26" and the arrow that I shot in that picture is 480gr. I'll get more data this afternoon. As for the draw, my first impression was that it was very smooth. I haven't shot the dynamic in awhile, so I'm going to have my friend bring it over so I can compare. South and I did an informal draw force curve in his shop and it increased at an acceptable rate out to 28". I forgot the exact numbers, we were just checking for stacking. Scaling the bow out to 28" is something on my "to do list."
Thanks Tod!
Mahalo Art! If all goes well, I hoping to do some informal comparisons between the hybrid, the original dynamic and the original static.
Thanks!
man oh man I cant wait for the test results..wish you had one of his longbows there as well..Im leaning towards the hybid handle with static limbs and longbow limbs off the same riser..thats my dream bow and I think Im gonna pull the trigger...real soon
Ryan after looking over the pics again..they are awesome..great pics..really tells a story..great detail
Art,
We do have one of his longbows, but it's a 70lb "buff bow" :D
Hopefully I'll be equipped better next year. Then I'll be able to get some good data! It's all part of the plan!
Aloha!
Ryan
So I was able to grab the original riser with the dynamic limbs, the hybrid riser with static limbs and the prototype bow. All these bows had the same nock height, same 14 strand 8125 string and same silencers. The only difference is that I didn't have a set of limbsavers for the prototype.
First thing that I did was set the brace to 7.5". Then I double checked the poundage.
The original handle with the prototype static limbs.
The hybrid handle with the static limbs.
The original riser with the dynamic limbs.
They were all scaled at 26". The greatest variance was .4lbs.
Then I weighed the arrow which shot well out of all three bows.
SPEED:
Next it was time for the chrono. Keep in mind that all chrono's read a little different. I have an indoor lighting kit on mine to keep things as consistent as possible.
The prototype.
The hybrid.
The original.
I shot each bow at least six times. The prototype shot between 173-175fps, (majority was 174-175). The hybrid shot between 174-176fps (majority 175-176) and the original shot between 172-174fps (majority 172-173). I would give the original at least 1fps due to the .3-.4 lb discrepancy.
So in terms of speed, they were all very similar, with just a slight edge given to the hybrid handle.
Given my shooting ability, the differences in speed is negligible for myself.
Now it was time to take them to the range...
SOUND:
I didn't have anything "formal" for the noise, but I did do an informal test. I turned my back and closed my eyes while Craig shot the different bows. In terms of noise to the human ear, I kept picking the hybrid and the prototype as the quietest, but I couldn't identify which one was quieter between the two.
Craig at full draw with the dynamic.
Craig at full draw with the prototype.
THE SHOT:
Next was the feel of the shot. Once again I narrowed my choices to the hybrid and the prototype. Personally I feel, if built correctly, the statics shine in terms of limb vibration. I don't have scientific proof, but it does feel as if it recovers faster after the shot.
THE DRAW:
I ran out of time and didn't get to do a draw force curve up to 28". But for my shooting style, I really couldn't feel much differences between the draw cycles of all the bows.
Let me know if you guys have any questions.
Thank you!
Ryan
Great pics and review!Congrats.
Cool review. Thanks Ryan
Thanks Felix!
Anytime William!
Aloha!
Ryan
Keith,
I've looked at doing an overlay to cover the back of the limb stem on the belly of the bow as you inquired about. In order to do that, I'd have to change the lines of the bow in order to do that and I'm a little reluctant to do that. I'm really happy with the look and feel of the riser. One of these days I may do some more tinkering to see if I can come up with something appealing, but it isn't at the top of my list yet. I still have a couple of new bow ideas to spend my time on first....
Ryan,
Your bench disgusts me! It looks like you could perform surgery on it. I'm going to buy you a Swiffer for Xmas, looks like you must go through them daily! You're making the rest of us look bad!
Now if I could keep the rest of the house that clean, I'd be set! I guess you can see where my priorities are! :knothead:
I just can't seem to find anything when my bench is that clean:)
LOL Andrew! Yeah don't clean, I wouldn't want you to loose my bowhunting orders!!! :D
Thanks for the reply South. I too like the looks and feel of the riser. Just was wondering is all.
South,
Once you start offering a 1pc. recurve ???, covering limb bolt systems will no longer be an issue.
I'm sure enjoying the 1pc. L/B you built for me last year....Thanks much, Dana
Ryan..awesome review...really good pics as they were telling the story..Im torn between the prototype and the hybrid..gonna have to decide :)
Now your gonna have to get out there and kill some animals to break her in..South..your gonna be hearing from me real soon...great job on design and thank you for making a great bow!!!!
You're very welcome Art! Thanks for following along. In my opinion, the hybrid has a very slight edge in terms of speed and limb vibration. The hybrid is also lighter in physical weight and slimmer in design. Although the hybrid has a slight performance edge, I still prefer the prototype. I just love the "lines" of the original riser with the prototype limbs and I personally prefer a heavier riser. Let me know if you need any other comparison photos or information.
Thank you!
Ryan
Ryan, so you like the Striker better than the Tracker?, never shot the Striker
I like the looks and physical weight of the Striker with the Static limbs. I shoot both bows well and with only a slight performance edge on the Tracker, I've decided to go with "looks" for now... :D
Just placed my order,I was waiting since few months for the Striker with the static limbs.
Aloha Felix,
Hope all is well! Yeah, I love the Striker handle, it's definitely my favorite. I shot some bare shafts out to 30 this morning and was pretty happy with the results.
Take care,
Ryan
loving this thread..cant decide what I like :) many choices and options out there..was planning longbow limbs but now it looks like Im gonna go for new static but what handle design..thats where the problem is..LOL Ryan..any ideas? :)
Hey Art,
I was hoping to convince you with a "success pic" but no luck this afternoon. ;)
If you wanted to try one or the other first, South does have a "test drive" option. All it'll cost is the price of shipping.
I like the look of the ebony flare risers
Agreed! The ebony footed risers are sweet!
Few more pics from the field.

We didn't end up with any meat for the smoker, but we did get some guava for the family. Although, I don't think South designed the static tips for picking fruit. :D
(http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t142/rysanpei/IMG_3073.jpg)
Cool pics!!
Those hooks on the static should be perfect for picking fruit! What kind of tree is that mystical looking one? I need a bow made from that! I can't wait to see some success pics and to hear what NEW ideas are about to come out of Stalker Custom Bows!
Great pics Ryan!
Ryan knowing you..you will drop a pig soon enough but now your in the bamboo..find any bamboo hearts? :) thats some good eats along with the guava..man your making me miss the Island big time
MAN that bow looks sharp in it's natural element, gonna be better looking when theres a dead pig underneath it
Thanks Ed!
Mike,
That's one type of guava tree. It's a waiawi, a strawberry guava. The guys here make selfbows from it. I've made a few in the past.
Thanks Andrew,
BTW those Crispi boots performed awesome in the muddy hills yesterday!
Art,
Our hunting areas are dwindling fast. We're losing hunting areas to environmentalist and now competing with dog and rifle hunters all in the same hunting areas. I'd be lucky to see one in the next few trips. Won't stop me from trying though. Didn't harvest any hearts, but may go back in the future. Bamboo everywhere.....
Aloha!
Ryan
thats what I missed most about the Islands..the vast amount of food you can get if you look..didnt realize you was losing ground there..I agree the enviromentalist are no help and the competion between the other hunters was so bad..wasnt like that when I lived there..you are always welcome to come stateside and hunt with me anytime and Im sure every member here would be happy to have you as well :)
BTW those guava selfbows hit hard if properly made :)
Thanks for the invite Art. Much appreciated!
Here's an old pic I dug up for you and Mike. It's the only pic I have left of my last "silk backed" guava bow.
thats sweet bud...good looking bow!
looking good guys!
Thanks Ryan. Looks like it does have some mystical magic in that wild wood!
Mahalo Andy!
"Mystical Magic" that's a good one Mike! If I build another selfbow, I'm stealing that name!!!
Yes Ryan,Crispi are really good boots.
MADE IN ITALY! ;)
Very nice!
Lots of mountain hunters use them.
Very nice bow!
Thanks Guy!
These new static limbs look really good. South says that they have a lot less vibration the the dynamic...which means quieter and smoother to shoot. A win-win in my book...especially since the dynamic limbs are already make a sweet shooting bow. Can't wait to try them out!
