What a great day to be a cheesehead!!
Yeah, the game took some time. Just got back yesterday afternoon in time to watch it. Then it was on to playing butcher.... :goldtooth:
OH, Spill it already!!
Please  :coffee:
I had the pleasure of sharing a camp this weekend with my friend Greg Szalewski, a fellow PBS'r and WTA member. Greg has had a phenomenal season already, having taken a spring turkey, Wisconsin bear, great buck, and a doe this fall. I figured anyone with that kind of luck was good to hang around with...
Greg had punched out early on Friday and drove straight up to my cabin, arriving in plenty of time to hunt yet that afternoon. He was in doe only mode, and I walked him in to one of the better stands on the property. As we walked in we jumped two deer that had been bedded 10 yards away from the stand. Dang!!
I went to another stand just west and up on top of the hill from where I had left Greg. Two does, each with a fawn in tow, feed down the hill about 40 yards away in the direction where Greg sat in wait. I got this picture which I found interesting. Hadn't realized that blacktail deer had infiltrated our state :dunno:

They fed down the ridge between Greg and I. He was able to see two of them from his stand, but eventually they headed on to the corn fields below without taking the trail we had hoped.
Is it just my computer or is that picture huge?!?!
My image is sized to 600x450 both on my computer and on the Photobucket site. I have no idea why it appears too large here. After posting hundreds of pictures here I have never run into this before. Not sure what to do. Guess I'll try uploading the rest and hope it looks better on others computers. :dunno: :dunno:
HUGE! :D
HUGE!!!!!!!!!!
You sure that`s not 6000x4500? :)
I just deleted all the photos from photobucket. Double checked that all were sized correctly both on my computer before uploading and on the photobucket site, and uploaded them again.
Here is the same picure
http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y80/Jlasch/2012%20Deer/2012DeerHunts071.jpg
I have absolutely no idea. All I know is that I hate photobucket!!
I don't have time to mess with it now. I have meat to cut, and am headed back to the cabin in the morning. Frustrating!!!
http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y80/Jlasch/2012%20Deer/2012DeerHunts071.jpg
That is a big deer!
I give up. Photobucket has beaten me....
On with the story..... :archer:
Congrats Whip !!!
And yes, I too sometimes hate Photobucket !!!
Dang Whip, quit stalling, on with the story.
Must be his nap time already..... :biglaugh: :biglaugh: :biglaugh:

Don't give up the ship Joe!!! On with the story.
I wish I could, but it's really hard to tell much of a story without being able to post pictures. I'd rather wait until I can figure this out. Problem is that I don't have time to mess with it anymore than I already have.
I've posted literally hundreds of pictures here, and am pretty comfortable that I know how to do it. I've resized my photos on my computer three different times. Uploaded them to photobucket, deleted and reuploaded three different times. Verified over and over that my images are sized to 600 x 450 pixels. I have no idea what else to try.
If a moderator or someone I trust would like my password to photobucket you are more than welcome to tell me what I am doing wrong.
I'm headed back out to continue cutting meat...
I had this same argument with PB a couple weeks ago, gave up and they magicly changed to what I wanted all along.
Cut away Whip we'll be here when you get back!!! I hate photobucket too..has done that to me twice during threads. :campfire:
As I mentioned before early success opens up other opportunities. After filling my buck tag on my first outing of the year a few people asked what I would do now and I replied that that was not a problem as I have many unfinished projects on my hunting land and who knows, maybe someone could use a camp bitch. Well Joe Lasch responded right back and said he could in fact use a camp bitch. So we set up a weekend to hunt his property. I put careful consideration into putting together the perfect menu for a Wisconsin deer camp (cleaned out some crap from my freezer to make room for more venison) and was on my way to be Joe's guest and do a bit more bowhunting. As it turned out I was regarded as some sort of good luck charm and anything I fed him would be tolerated as long as I was close by.
Looking forward to the rest of the story!
I arrived at Joe's cabin mid afternoon and was enthusiasticly greated by Arlo, Joe's new dog. Joe has been training him to track deer and so far had been on three blood trails. While Joe was putting my gear in the cabin Arlo confided in me that he was glad to see me as he had heard of the endless trail of dead critters I was leaving. He also repeated over and over that he didn't think Joe would ever get a deer for him to track. Well, anyway that is how I interpreted his body language.

That is "LOL" Funny
Joe,
Don't get yourself frustrated. Take care of your meat and play this virtual game later. I'm constantly noticing that it takes time for Photobucket databases to catch up with resizing of images. Once you have them resized and you've confirmed that just let it go. They will catch up eventually and I've yet to have one pulled by mods prior to PB catching up with the resizing of pixels.
Congratulations in advance and look forward to story and pics. Greg - That was indeed a halarious picture you painted there...
~CB
I'm taking a quick break for lunch. Sent a couple of PM's with pictures attached and they seemed to work fine, so I'll give it another try. I also need to set the record straight with Greg - obviously he doesn't know how to understand Boykin Spaniel talk.
Greg has in fact piled up a stack of critters this year. I had a plan by inviting him up. Yes, he is a great camp cook, so that was part of it. But the real reason was that when he wasn't watching I snuck into his daypack and stole a piece of his luck.
I figured that after the does left that would probably be it for the evening, and as darkness came crept into the woods around me it sure seemed like I was right.
I knew it was just about over for the night. I was just about to get my phone out to check the time when I heard a stick break. Then another one. Something heavy was close. Through the shadows I could make out a large bodied deer headed my way. Buck! And a good one!
I was already standing, and facing the right direction, so all I had to do was lift my bow from the holder and wait for him to step into a shooting lane. He moved slowly, but steadily, and before I knew it an arrow was off.
My initial reaction was "Oh No!" How could I blow that shot?!? The hit seemed too far forward, and penetration was not good. The buck crashed off down the hillside, and I listened to his direction of travel. It sounded like he stopped, then a little more rustling, more silence, then some more noise.
Had he just stopped to try to figure out what had happened, and then continued on?
Not being sure of the hit, I tend to err on the side of caution. I chose to wait until morning to follow it up.
As Greg mentioned, I have a new family member this year, and spent the summer training him to blood trail. He had been on a few tracks already this fall, and had done a great job. But I still don't have complete faith, and like to be able to confirm his trailing with finding actual blood on the ground as we go. I figured that daylight would give us the best chance of being able to do that.
After a restless night, eventually it was time to go. The sun was up and lighting was good. We started searching where I thought the deer had run, but Arlo insisted that something further up the hill smelled interesting. He was right on the money, and we had first blood.
Continuing on down the steep hillside blood sign was fairly sparse, with mostly small droplets scattered along the direction of travel. As we reached the bottom the sign picked up, and Arlo was moving right along. There were a couple of spots where I didn't see blood where he wanted to go, and pulled him back to where I thought we should be headed. I was wrong. Arlo was right, and it wasn't long before Greg had it sorted out.
The deer made a couple of changes in direction and headed toward a thick area that had been clearcut 6 or 7 years ago. As we entered the thicker stuff this is what we found.

There! Now that picture looks better! Photobucket must be some sort of magic. I didn't do a thing differently.
The hit had indeed been way too far foward, but sometimes it is better to be lucky than good. It's a darn good thing that I had stolen that luck from Greg, because I needed every ounce of it. I wished that I had the confidence to track the same night, but I sure was happy with the way it turned out.

We put the deer on the scale after the tenderloins had already been removed. Adding a few pounds for them I'm calling it 205# dressed.
That's a lot of meat to cut, and I'm still at it!!
Very nice deer Whip. Congrats to you and your Boykin.
Congrats Whip .... :clapper: yes sometimes it's better to be lucky than good .... seems I've heard that some where before !
I just got my pound cake from lil D, sorry I'm not there to share it with you guys. Keep that luck going !!
That thing is Huge, good dog trailing
Congrats Whip!
Congrats, Joe! Good story and a great buck!
Way to go Joe, I'm glad things worked out for you.
Awesome buck sir. :clapper:

Congrats Joe. Very nice deer. Looks like you have enough to put that canner to good use this year.
Very nice buck, congratulations. Good lookin tracker ya got there too.
Very nice heavy buck! Congrats!
That's awesome buddy!! Thanx for the text brother!!
So where did you end up hitting exactly?
Congratulations Joe!
Congratulations on the nice buck, Joe. Seems to me that there are now TWO chefs available for the remainder of the season.
Instead of sneaking into Greg's backpack for some luck, you should have just taken his Robertson. The thing's a killer. All he has to do is point the thing at an animal and it tips over. I'm not sure if shooting an arrow is even necessary...the bow is magic!
Congrats on a very nice buck!
Way to go Joe!
Not only did you defeat photobucket but shot a great buck to boot! Big ol' body on him for sure.
What stand were you hunting out of?
Sounds like a perfect weekend to me. Big time congrats again!!
Gary, look closer at the pics. Joe got the big brother to my bow. 62" 52#.
A good luck charm like me could come at a price though. While I was waiting for shooting light Sat morning before we went to look for the buck I had an idea. You see the stand I was in was in the general direction the buck had gone i hatched a dastardly plan to search the area with my binocs and if I located him I was going to put my tag on it. Of course I would make no mention of any of that. Now that would make a priceless pic. :biglaugh:
Great buck Whip .... And I am with you 110% on Photobucket... I detest it !!!!!!!!!!
Froggy

I think I'm going to get one of those Fathead Wall Graphics made of that one.
SC Swamp Poodle does good for the man with the Golden Horseshoe.
Many many congrats, buddy. Couldn't happen to a finer gentlemen. :clapper:
Wow! What a nice buck! Congratulations Joe! Nice story and pictures too! :clapper:

Congrats, Whip.
PS: Always trust the dog. Its hard with pups until you gain confidence in them, I know. Guaranteed we mess them up more than we help them on track though.
Steve
Congrats Joe! well done sir :clapper:
Hey Joe! Way to go sir! Awesome deer!
Congrats on a fine buck, Whip! Anybody that has bowhunted very long knows it is better to be lucky than good every once in a while. Glad it all worked out for ya!
Bisch
Nice buck Joe! I bet you guys had a fun weekend, love those spaniels too.
-Jay
Arlo, You done good....real good.

Good work, Joe. He's a dandy.

Although all's well that ends well, I really messed up on my part of this one. I pulled the shot far right and ended up hitting just in front of the upper shoulder. The broadhead I think was stopped by the spine where it drops down toward the neck. It never entered the chest cavity, and while there was decent blood on the ground it wasn't outstanding.
Most of the blood was collected in the tissue between the shoulder and the ribs - unbelieveable how much blood was in there! The arrow had stayed in him the whole way, and I think that really contributed to the damage that was done. A good testament to a scary sharp three blade! Broadhead was a Woodsman Elite.
That broadhead was stuck behind the shoulder and came out real hard. A good chance it was doing more damage as he was running/walking. All the blood you would expect to find in the chest cavity was under the skin and shoulder. YUCK!!!
Congrats on a fine animal!!
Nice buck!
I'm heading to buffalo county, Wisconsin on Friday,
I hope I can find a piece of "luck" like the one you stole(I mean found).
Nice Buck.......
Nice buck, nice story.
NICE!! Way to go Joe.
Joe & Arlo -- Fine buck, well done! What a confidence builder for both of you.
Very nice buck. Congrats.
way awesome buck!! Congrats.
Congrats Joe!
What a great picture! That a way to go Joe...Congrats....i feel a longbeard in your future
Congrats to you, Joe!
Great buck Joe! Way to go!
Way to go Joe. Nice buck! Looks tasty too!
Congrats Joe. Great deer and outstanding story. Thanks for sharing.
Way to go Joe !!!
I see retirement can be fun, and it looks like it improves the size of the deer.
Carl
Great story and buck, congrats!
Nice buck!
One thing seems a little fishey here though. I have yet to see the dogs OWNER mentioned in this story.
If I remember correctly that puppy was bought as a gift to sort of soften up a certain person due to a LLLLOOOONNNNGGGG trip.
You mean she LETS you borrow her dog to help with your, should we say, "Other than adequate shooting skills"?
;)
Very nice buck, Joe! Congratulations!
Kenny :clapper:
Good point about Arlo's owner. Arlo has a standing invite to come to my camp. I will have to run that by his owner and if nothing else Joe can bring him.
Kenny Y, you know her too well. Getting Arlo away from home is getting harder and harder. Now when I call all she asks about is how her little boy is. Didn't care much about my deer, but wanted to know all about how he did with the tracking.
I can't compete with him.....
:biglaugh: :biglaugh: :biglaugh: :biglaugh: :biglaugh: :biglaugh:
Seems like I remember, Irene wanting to send that South Carolina mutt back when you first got home last spring :)
Way to go Joe, nice buck!
David
Nice one Joe. 'So happy for you.
Great buck Joe, congrats!
That deer looks a wee bit familiar to me, Joe!!
Those smaller brow tines up your way threw me, thinking I was looking at a whopper 6pt last year and by the time he showed his brows... I'd lost confidence...
Nice job! Dead is dead... archery isn't always as neat and clean as we'd like, but with good perseverance, things work out for dedicated hunters!
Congrats all around...so did your "guest" get to whack a doe or not?? :) Or did you steal all his luck?
He cleaned me out but good. The deer were avoiding me regardless of where i went. I still think Arlo likes me better though.
Well, Greg, a few days at Camp Lasch is better than a dead deer any day!
I loved that place...I did camp Beotch too---after tearing my hamstring last year... but that was one cool set up Joe and his wife have there... very, very cool! I loved it!
Great buck Joe!
Congrats Joe nice buck.
Great buck Joe!!!
Heartfelt congrats! :campfire:
You got that right Dave. It couldn't have worked out better. It is a true pleasure to go to a place like that. I saw a few deer, great weather, and I got to share the experience of Joe taking a monster deer.
....yeah, Greg, and you made a friend for life in the pup! :)
Being a part of such a harvest, recovery and exhilaration is above valuation!
Way to go Joe, beautiful buck!!!
Do not see many Boykins.
Have seen lots of fat in the deer this year. How was yours?
Would love to see a fellow WTA members place someday.
Great deer you harvested.
Great buck!
Congrats!
Great Buck! Congrats!
Yea Buddy, congrats to y'all!
great looking buck.
Congrats!
