Last night I realized a goal I have had for some time now.
Hunting with a selfbow I made, shooting a rivercane arrow I cut, straightened and fletched, with a point I knapped, I harvested a nice doe.
The shot was about 12 yards, and broadside. I hit 6" high and 6" left. It missed the shoulder blade by 1/4". I was lucky.
The arrow only went in about 6-8". The tip broke and with her running through the brush, it did an amazing amount of damage.
She ran about 60 yards, stopped and stood for a few minutes. I was whispering " please go down!"
Her tail was flickering quickly as I lost sight of her. I listened and thought I heard her stumble and lay down.
After waiting 30 min to get down, I went to get a better light. I went to where I saw her last. No blood. I looked where I heard her stumbling. I walked right by her once and then there she was!

Jim,
That is awesome! I have the same goal, but I am quite a ways behind you. I have found suitable arrow shaft material, my first attempt at a self bow broke and I have only read about knapping. I'll keep plugging away at it. Nice doe.
How cool is this?.... Way!.... I'm saying!!!!
:archer:
Just plain awesome!!!
A hunt you will not soon forget!
Wow Congratulations on a tremendous acomplishment!

David
 :archer:
FAntastic, quite and accomplishment!!!
Will you go back to "modern" materials???
Excellent, congrats !!!!
Thanks guys. I will go back to my glass bows eventually I'm sure.
It was amazing to see how effective a bow and arrow set of all natural materials is.
The simplicity of the two, bow and arrow. The quiet thump of the bowstring, and the elation of collecting a hard earned trophy. Priceless.

Looks like alot of pride went into making the bow/arrows and points. All around, really impressive. Someday, I would like to do the same.

Jim, that's cooler than words.
Hell, I like you...
That's amazing! Good job. Congatulations, nice deer.
Congratulations Jim! Outstanding!
Question is... should I recycle the arrow or retire it?
That is very nicely done right there! Great job and thanks for sharing a great story with us.
K.C.
too cool! congrats!
Super impressive and awesome. Congrats.
that is really really cool. what an experience. gear from scratch to shot to hit to recovery. Very cool. good job.
Jim,
I would retire it. I was wondering the same thing about the stone I killed a doe with a few weeks back. The head was in perfect shape and I had planned on strapping it back on an arrow, but I think its best to date it and sit it away...maybe let one of my boys use it someday. That's JMO. Congrats once again! Awesome job
Great job. That's a real accomplishment.
Great looking bow and arrow(and deer),too.
Congrats!
Awesome!
NICE!!!!!!!!!
Good work, on the kit and the hunt!!!
I did the same a few years back and had nearly the same results; 50# osage, 10 yards broadside, only about 6-7 inches penetration from tip of flint, and almost no blood. She ran prob'ly 75 yards, but I was able to see her go down in the open woods.
Took me two years of waiting for the right situation to even take the shot!
Very nice! Great preparation and execution!
Hats off to you, that is fantastic and a goal I think we would all love to accomplish.
Not sure how I missed this. Great job Brother!
Nice work!
I'm sure the lack of a pass through was due to the poor shot on my part. I rushed a little. It seemed that as soon as the string hit my anchor, the arrow was on its way. I usually pause and focus on the spot before release.
Here is the new head on the arrow I used. This pic is before gluing and tying it in.

This is what I call "walking the walk"...
WAY TO GO BROTHER!!! :campfire:
great stuff mate. i'm in the process of making my primitive kit right now. what string were you using? i've made a rawhide string for my selfbow and i'm impressed with how it shoots. and easy to make as well.
again. well done.
Awesome! Congrats!
Great looking bow-arrow-animal...its on my list too!
Congrats!

Glenn
Thanks guys. The string is commercially made. One of the things I need to learn how to do.
