Hi all. My name's Ray and I'm new here. I come from the compound world, but have grown tired of the "ease" of modern archery. It just wasn't fun anymore, kinda like it was just "too easy".
I had the opportunity to shoot one of Jim Reynolds Thunderstick II longbows. That put the fun back into archery for me. I now own a 50# at 28" Thunderstick III.
I really need some advice on where to start for wood shafts. My draw length is 26". The more I read of Dr. Ashbys reports, the more I want to end up with a finished arrow weight of 600 plus grains. My hunting will consist of whitetails and ,hopefully, a black bear next year.
I'm looking to shoot a 300 grain broadhead / fieldpoint. Shafts will be cut to 28". I'm looking at Surewood shafts. Does anyone shoot roughly the same setup? I have no problems with getting a test set of various spine weights, I just need a starting point.
Thank you for any and all input.
Ray
Sixgun, welcome to a new journey. I have shot port cedar for years and just last year used surewood shafts and love them. I would suggest to get a set of test shafts and make them up, you will likely be around the 50-55# shafts for your draw length. Hope this helps and good shooting.
if you go with 10 to 12 grains per pound youll end up with a arrow around500 to 560..if you want to do wood you need to contact magnus he is a site sponsor and a hell of a guy....
Watch going to heavy try to stay in the 450gr range.Your bow is only going to be around 45lbs.
The old timers got it done with 400-450 gr. arrows, read some of the older books on hunting and archery, what longbowben says above is true and that is all you need.
Good luck.
Thanks all!
I'll be ordering some test shafts from Surewood here soon!
Looks like it will be a fun ride! I love learning new things!
Ray
