Title: 50's Style Recurves - Suggestions and Pics
Post by: D. Key on October 17, 2012, 09:46:00 AM
I love 50's style recurves with slim longbow type handles.  I'd like to see pics of yours and your opinions of them with recommendations.  I've owned Mahaska's, Toelke Chinooks, Fox Breed, Widow PSR's,and Sarrels Bobcatt.  Let me know what else is out there (with pics) and if you have one 58"-60" and 45-50# for sale, please let me know.  I'd love to buy another.

Thanks.

I sold them but I was pretty happy with my Great Northern Ghost and Super Ghost. Both were sufficiently fast, nicely made, and light to carry.

It looks like Bear is bringing back there classic 59 Kodiak. I don't think you can get more classic than that.  Also, look at Ron LaClairs Scout recurve or Little Favorite recurve on his website (he's in the sponsor section here). Beautiful bows, great shooters and the Shrew grip is habit forming.

I use a st charlese thunderbird 2,, all Yew limbs and riser, 63" 48@28 and is super accurate.  Ghosts are very nice,Shrews if you like em short er than average,  there are a bunch including the 59 kodiak and even a Saxon 59 Kadiak if you can find one.  I also use a 1953 Bear Static recurve which is sweet..

good bows that to me shoot and feel like longbows, so switching back and fourth shouldn't be a problem.

Kohannah Kurves are great bows. If I could find one with a thumb rest I'd buy it(around 50#, hint, hint).
I have Northern Mist Ottowa on order from Steve Turay!Great looking bows, will try and post a pic later.

There are a bunch of good ones.I own a couple Mojo Stiks right now that I really like.Shrews are good.I also owned a 60" Acadian Woods that I wish I had back.Vintage Works '59 Kodiak replica is amazing if you want a late '60's look but they are in big demand right now and a fairly long wait.I don't own one but the Toelke Chinook would be worth looking at to.

My favorite to date is the Holm-Made River Runner. Mine was 58" 51@28. Sold it to Killeen to focus more on my love of the longbow.  (http://i765.photobucket.com/albums/xx295/orlith2001/Hunting%20Bows/bows002.jpg)

You can't beat the quality, appearance, or shootability of the Great Northern Ghost.  However, I've seen some nice 57' and 58' original Bear Kodiaks on the auction sites lately...that might be another option.

Not that I am "against" custom bows... (Because certainly, I'm NOT!!!)

But, For the price of one of them... You could get a SWEET "original" 50's recurve off the classifieds, and have a perfectly functionable, and shootable, "classic" 50's recurve!!!!!

I just got my first traditional bow, a 58 or 59 Bear Alaskan.  Not sure if it fits the bill. I need proper arrows, but I want to go trad, and if I'm good enough, maybe take a whitetail next season.

That bow should do fine, maybe get with some of the carbon guys and see how they bump up the head weight to give it the punch you want. All in all I would shoot it.

I think I have owned seventy five or more 50s style recurves. Both vintage and newer ones.Mostly newer ones though.

The Whippenstick Inferno is really nice in overall performance and very sharp looking.Mines a 2 PC.I like his limb design!

I am also shooting a 62" River Runner currantly and really like it alot.

Thiers definatly many other very good ones available from other builders.

I have a 58" 64# Saxon that is a sweet little bow.  Unfortunately, no longer made and hardly ever see the Saxon recurve come up on the used market.  It is worth a try if you can find one.

Wish I could do a better picture but we have near blizzard conditions going on right now. My Saxon Kadiak. Custom made for John Nail by Randy and now in my closet. In my humble and biased opinion a lovely bow.

I've owned a 60" Chinook. It was one of the best shooting bows I've ever owned.  I also had a super ghost that I think is very under rated.  Very smooth draw.  I shot it very accurately.  I've owned a Kurv, which was very accurate and exceptionally quiet.  I shot my first 2 "Robin Hoods" with my 56" PSR.  right now, I have a Lone Wolf Banshee. That is one of the sweetest bows I've every shot, especially for a 52" bow.

Mahaska and Kohannah Kurve are 2 great bows reasonably priced.  I had my first Trad Kill with The Mahaska after coming back to Trad with it. The one I shot the most accurately was a Widow PSR. Just something about it just clicked.
