Title: Dry Fletching??
Post by: dcolavito on October 05, 2012, 11:38:00 AM
Any ideas on best way to keep fletching dry?  In the past I've used small plastic bags over each arrow, which is fine, but at times cumbersome.

Just returned from a 5 day hunt in what seemed like a tropical rain forest on all but the first day.  This time I'd used the white powder stuff from Bohning but after a day or so of 100% humidity and rain, feathers still became soaked.

Guess it's asking a lot to keep feathers dry in those conditions but wondered if there's something out there that would.

I use baby bottle liners over each arrow when I will be walking thru a lot of wet brush or if I will be using a bow quiver in a light rain. Otherwise I use a Simmons roto-quiver..

Ever try vanes?  I used to always keep one arrow with vanes in my quiver.  I shoot 5" feathers and when hunting rain, 4" vanes.

Thanks all ... Randy, my ignorance, but do you have a link for the Simmons Roto-quiver?  Tried searching but having trouble finding it.

Simmons doesn't make that quiver anymore..you may be able to find one on the secondary market..it is basically a PVC pipe covered in camo with a rotating quiver inside that will hold 5 or 6 arrows.

Camp-Dri, Food Grade Spray Silicone, or Bottle liners. I use the first two plus keep arrows in an Arrowmaster.

I've conducted practice sessions with saturated feathers on broadhead tipped arrows and found flight concerns to be over rated. Perhaps I have just the right combo. Give it a try and draw your own conclusion. It might be you can split hairs at 20 yds.

What Red said...but truthfully in that kind of rain and dampness I think any feather treatment would come up short. I like more feather on my arrows to compensate if possible. If I'm out there with 4" shield cuts then I use a fleece fletching cover that I've treated heavily with camp dry..

Another product is Fletch Dry it is sold by both major archery suppliers.  It is a super lite powder that you put in a bag or a 2 liter bottle and stick the fletch end of the shaft in and shake.  It works well as long as the feather are not distrubed a lot.

Simmons rotary quiver or Cat Quiver II here. Both will keep feathers absolutely dry.

I LIGHTLY spray with aerosol Helmsman spar urethane BUT WARNING do NOT overspray or you will have a plasticy hard mess that resembles a plastic vane!  One quick, light pass is all you need!
