Title: Stand names
Post by: John Krause on October 02, 2012, 09:34:00 PM
I like to start a thread every year about the names you give your stands. The're often very discriptive or have earned their name. My Bud and I name all our stands. We have a great time with it and it lets us know exactly where the other guy is.

So list your stand names and give a little story about them if you want. I'll start.... These are all ladder stands.

Point plot, damn stand, Bullseye (mark on the tree), Mossy Knoll, Upper Mossy Knoll, Spins stand, Spoon (It's in a bowl, Line stand, Hidden spring, Shed alley, 2 Hole stand, 3 rub, turkey roost, Ridge run, triple tree, N Creek stand, Rub City, Springhole, Towelhead (it;s in the middle eastern part of the property   :)  ) Wooded food plot.

I think that's it

The windmill, high creekbed, three forks creekbed, the arch blind, big cedar, big dead cedar, cottonwood laydown, osage crawler, turkey roost!, soybean ambush. All naturally enhanced ground blinds we've built over the past spring summer and early this 'fall', with the exception of the windmill blind A.C. built a couple of years ago.

Fun thread! Good idea!

The following are well used ground blinds ... places that get sat every year for good reason.

The cooler, Doug's stand, the hogs back, pines, the point, and the funnel.

Bob.

We have a damn stand as well, of course near the beaver dam.  The spine, the doghouse, the boulder, the berm road, partridge lane, the metal stand, and Kathy's.  I'm sure I've missed one or two but that's pretty much it.

Headed to camp this friday and I can't wait to visit all my favorite old haunts and find some new ones!  The stands I've listed above are all places pretty close (within 2-3 miles) of camp, we have only just started exploring the state land that borders the property so I'm sure that we will have a few to add to the list every year!

First time on new land to hunt.  I named my set, ( predators valley) because I saw no deer but called in a fox to about 5 yards before kissing his nose and sending him on his merry way, and drew back on two yotes but no shot.

John,

My brother found this track at our family farm near Springfield, MO 8-9 years ago. The spot has been named bear track ever since.

Funny now it may become less of a unique feature because the MDC says their are 400-600 bears now in the state. I think the population has really jumped in the last several years as my brother has a friend who got game camera pictures of a bear this fall in Missouri.
Pretty cool!

Post by: JO_EZ on October 03, 2012, 01:26:00 PM
Most of our stands are named after person who generally has some loose claim of ownership to the equiptment and that person usually hunts that spot first, but it is a roulette after that.

John's Tree stand - John built it, but may not have ever hunted in it, but Mike did and killed a doe out of it.

Jake's Tree Stand - Now defunct, but still represents the tree, which is about 60 yards south of Hyma's old stand in the South East corner. Which, has been moved because the tree died. But now the whole SE corner is the Tri-Pod stand.

Mike's Tree stand, which is now Tony's Tree Stand because Mike moved up north.

The food polt - for obvious reasons... which is where Hyma's stand is now located.

The-clearing-across-the-creek-from-Uncle-Don's-old-Vega - Self explanitory.

However, since I ground hunt and usually only sit in impromptu set ups, my spots are named things like:
The-clump-of-bushes-just-south-of-"the"-beech-tree-no-the-big-one-yeah-by-the-hemlock-but-closer-to-the-creek...

Brushpile - i built up a brushpile to direct deer to a closer trail that goes by the stand.

Old Pine Stand - there is an old stand that all that is left is the outer fram in this pine tree.

Moss Rub - big rub on this moss covered white oak tree.

Dogs stand - there isa dog in a nearby house that always barks when deer are moving by his fenced in yard.

PIA - I gave my friend joe this spot and I usually have to set the stand up for him etc. hence he isa pain in the $%^&

Big Rock

Double Trouble - had two nice bucks fighting 30 yards from me but brush bloked the way and the big one chased off the other buck away from my stand.

Twin Oaks

Climber first - found a good trail and decided to put up a stand in this oak about twenty yards away and there must have been 50 suitable trees along this trail but after i got mine set up I saw a limb that had been cut years earlier so I assume someone with a climber sat the tree first.

The Orphanage:

We had a game and fish biologist come in and survey the habitat and buck to doe ratio, he gave us 25 doe tags for the season. We killed 10-12 of the does from that stand. It got the name from all the orphaned fawns running around up there .

Title: Re: Stand names

John Krause asked for more descriptions of how stands acquired their names and mentioned a few of mine.

Bald Face sits at the top of a hillside that at one time didn't have much cover.  It has since grown up to be very thick, but will always be known as Bald Face.

The Wagon Wheel stand is actually a new one this year, but seems to have trails approaching from every direction.  Time will tell if it lives up to it's name.  The challenge will be figuring out which wind direction works best.

Bachelor Pad is just as it sounds- the year it was first put up almost all the deer seen from it were bucks.  Hasn't stayed lime that over the years, but the name stuck.

It's obvious from this thread that I am not alone in recalling fond memories from the mention of some favorite stand names.

Skyline- is an area on the edge of a steep drop off that overlooks a number of other ridges.

The Living Room- it's a bowl with 5 foot rock sides. You have about 12' x 12' to move round in it's also above the ground.

The Meadow- a large grassy area in the middle of hard woods.

2 Walls - a knob that with 2 walls on either side. Each wall has a break innthe middle deer travel through... Or at least we hope.

The Honey Hole- spot we have seen deer at every time scouting.

Turkey Hill- spot we alway find dropped turkey feather at

The Nursery- we alway saw fawns in this area while stumping over the summer

Mikes Spot - unless he doesn't come. Then it's Pete's Spot!

Ambush- a finger of rocks that covers you on 3 sides with 2 intersecting deer trails leading to it. The deer will not see younuntil they are totally committed.

For whitetails we have

The Buck bedroom (tight to a known buck bedding area that is always good for bucks during the rut)

Poplar point (self explanatory, partner saw a 150 class at the end of last season... high hopes for that stand area this season)

Island (not too original)

beaver slide  (river edge with some beaver fall and a cool slide down to the river)

Near side  (only stand on the entrance side of the property)

North ditch  (Ditch crossing on the north side Brett shot a 140 class 2 seasons ago)

Salt lick  (funnel next to a big dug up hole that must have been an old salt spot)

Low Hole - a low and wet bottom surrounded by a high horeshoe shaped ridge
Slam Dunk - guaranteed doe killin spot  :banghead:

"Grandma's Stand"
My favorite stand, named because it was literally "over the river and through the woods".  Had to wear waders and wade across the Little Rice River, (a little unnerving the first few times in the dark) carrying your gear over your head.  Stand taught me something though... deer float.     ;)
