I have 3 Woodsman heads that fly like darts. They fly as well as any head that I have shot.....one problem....they whistle. They whirr like weed wacker nylon string. Has anyone ever experienced a reaction from deer as these heads fly noisily at them? Any way to stop the whirring?
i never shot a deer wth my woodsmans, but my snuffers i hav they whistle a bit but i noticed after i shoot them into my sand pit a couple times i believe it goes a way. shot 7 deer wth snuffers they never seemed to hear them coming but i shoot at close ranges 5 to 15 yards.
Check for burrs around the cutouts.... clean them up with a small file.
I'm using the Woodsman Elite 150 on my hybrid longbow. Pretty quick cast, no noise at all.
I have only shot the original version with the vents not the elites but it has been my experience a low whistle will not hurt anything. If it bothers you though put a little masking tape over the vents.
I experienced the same. Bugged the crap out of me. So I trimmed the arrow a little and went up to the solid 175.
i hate that whistle!! that is the one reason that i don't shoot wensel heads. I hear countless "remedies" for making them quiet, but why spend all that $$ on a head only to put vaseline ot masking tape on it? Magnus 2 blades kill things just as dead-- and they do it quietly.
I love them no that they have a solid one piece!! -170 grain come to daddy! No noise fly like freaking darts!
I normally shoot either Zwickeys or Journeyman (Eclipse) heads. Looks like I will be sticking with them. I do have a set of Bear Greenies that sharpen up great, maybe I will try them.
You know... I've been shooting woodsman broadheads for years and have never experienced a whistler.
I wonder if it may have anything to do with fletching type, or the amount of helical on the fletching rather than the heads themselves?

I've never experienced any excess noise from a regular or elite woodsman. The only broadhead I ever shot that made noise, a whooshing noise, was a Pearson Deadhead. I cured that by rounding the inside of the vent with a file.
Dang! I envy you young fellers who can still hear things whistle!
I have heard feathers kind of buzz when they get worn or bent, but never a broadhead. I haven't shot the Elites...too much money when the old WW or Zwickey Deltas kill stuff way dead, but never had a Snuffer or Woodsman whistle that I know of. Of course high pitch sounds kind of elude me these days anyhow. I've never had a deer complain either though.
I'm with you, Kirk????? I believe it's just one of those "urban legends". Or maybe that should be suburban legends!
It's called the whistle of death. lol
I don't know if it the hiss matters, at least it hasn't for me. The originals, and the Elites with cutouts, whistle for me, just like any other head with cutouts I've tried.
I'm shooting the 175 grain Elites now, no cutout, no noise. Still don't know it the hiss matters, your bow probably makes more noise. The solid blade heads eliminate the issue though.
