Title: Leon Stewart-Schafer-Pronghorn longbows
Post by: Jerry Bellmyer on September 30, 2012, 05:45:00 PM
I have decided to get a longbow after years of shooting compounds and recurves.

My final three are Stewart,Schafer,Proghorn

So far the Leon Stewart 3 piece takedown 62" "Slammer" gets the nod

Thoughts?

I own a Pronghorn, very good bow I
feel they are a solid shooter points
well. You can pick up used ones
at a fair price.

I love my Stewart, but I doubt you can go wrong with any of those three.

The Slammer is a great bow and Leon is one of the good guys.I have owned a few of his bows but currently shooting just one recurve,if I decide to shoot a longbow in the future it will definetly be a Stewart

All good bows, from what I hear. I have 2 S/tip RC's, and my next will be a 1pc S/tip LB.

I own and shoot Stewart's and Pronghorns. Both bowyers are super guys and make an excellent longbow. Although the Stewart and Pronghorn have different grips, I have no problems shooting either, and often do switch back and forth. In my humble opinion, considering equal draw weight, I believe the Pronghorn is just a little quicker. But, the Stewart seems to shoot a tighter group.  Best of luck with your decision, you won't go wrong with either of your choices.

I would have to lean towards the pronghorn myself

I have not shot a "Slammer" but I have shot one of Leon's two piece Longbows, nice bows, fine craftsmanship and they shoot well.
With that said my go to bow is a Pronghorn T/D Longbow. The grip just works for me. That's just my experience you should shoot them all if possible.

You need to try them before you will know--I have come to think that it doesn't matter who the bowyer is, the bow that fits you is the bow that fits you. Having said that, your probability of getting a great fit goes up tremendously with the bowyers you have mentioned plus a few others. Have fun finding the "right" bow!  :archer:

I have owned all three..
my go to bow this year is a my shafer 3 pc longbow
It is smooth drawing, doesn't feel like 60# and it comfortable in my hand. Beautiful too!!!
But let me just affirm what others have said.  All 3 three are excellent bowyers and make fine bows.  I sold a pronghorn I wish I could have back...
just my 2 cents

Hmm,,, how about more details in aquiring the bow like will it be new and ordered or bought used, does price matter, ect ect..

I'd take the pronghorn, slammer is nice but not as good as the stewart 3 piece,,, then again the pronhorn I think shoots nicer but not as pretty as the stewart and the pronghorn is alot cheaper and maybe a 3/rd of the wait..

all nice bows though..

The Stewart is super solid and stable shooting in my experience. The pronghorn 3 piece is very nice as well.I have had those 2.I have never shot the silvertip 3 PC longbow. The grip looks nice though on it and the checkering is awesome.

Whether you spend $2 or $2000, it all boils down to fit. As said above, all three are fine bowyers but shoot them all, in as many variations you can find before you commit.

Jerry -

Can't go wrong with a Leon Stewart bow. I solely shoot leon's bows and have owned plenty of them over the years. Let me know if you have any questions.

Throwing in my 2 cents for a pronghorn.  Awesome, dpendable, accurate bows.  Several of the best killers I know are throroughly attached to them.  When I started building my own, I used them for the form.  Mine aren''t nearly as nice as herbs though, they still do the job.

GREAT bows that deserve every good thing thats ever been said about them.

As others have said, try them all of you can as they are all different.

I had a Stewart three piece longbow and sold it as the riser had more mass and was heavier than I wanted.  I had a Shafer longbow - it was nice, but did not make we want to keep it.  I HAVE a Pronghorn three piece longbow that I do not think I will ever get rid of - too many memories of successful hunts.
